WARNING!!!! Wound Pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!

Poor Cabel, the Franken-dog is back from the hospital, a little loopy, but he drank a ton of water and ate a pound of meat and demolished a Chicken Chew, all good signs.

I wasn't prepared for either what he was going to look like, or how I was going to feel about it. I did cry, but I was not sick. Close thing. I hadn't thought about the entire leg being shaved, and I had expected a nice neat little bandage.

Mostly he is sleeping, all the way home, and now at home, he wants to follow me when ever I leave the room, so I think we will go camp in front of the TV. We stopped by our vets for a Cone-head for him, and he is going to have to wear it, as he is already trying to lick the wound.

He got much scritches and sympathy at the vets and he was a Star, all the vets came to look at him, and they want to do an X-ray when he gets his stitches out in two weeks, so they can see all the pins. Goofy Vets. I'll take a picture as I know about half of you are thinking "COOL! We want to see pins!" He needs to be iced a few times a day, no off-leash outside walking, no stairs, and he has three bottles of medicine to take four times a day.

It's all rather a bit overwhelming. I am not at ALL good with things like this, but, sometimes you have to just DO it, and deal with the situation. I didn't think I could IV Pod the Cat either, but I did. I feel worse for him than me, I suspect he is hurting. We'll curl up on my new floor bed, and spend a quiet evening.

Unless UPS comes back! Franken-dog let me KNOW a little thing like this wasn't going to stop him!!!!!!

Wish me luck! I'm going to, I suspect, need it...

Love and Dogs,
Lorraine

Poor guy! And poor you! I hope he does a lot of sleeping.

It doesn't loook too gruesome in the pics, althoug he's going to look pretty lopsided until he can grow his fur back, but I can see why it would be difficult to have to deal with (and worse in real life than onscreen, I'm guessing).

I wish you both a quiet afternoon and night.

At 2:57 PM , Blogger Adri said...

He looks relatively calm (dopey still?) and happy to be home, at least. I'm sure he will appreciate cuddles and tv, and it will probably make you feel better, too.

At 2:59 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

It did look a bit more gruesome in some of the pics, bur I made the call not to show them, he's feeling weird enough about me showing his big naked leg to the world...

I'll send them to Boss tho.

Hope it's a quiet, relaxing weekend for you both! Glad he's home now and in the best possible hands.

Good luck with the nursing duty! I think he has an "I loove you" look in his eyes. Hope it all goes well, Superwoman!

I'm back after taking a lazy holiday break. Family and a party. Went well, too, except that I drank just one martini too much on New Year's Eve. My old friend said I was "much more fun than usual." I can't decide whether or not to have hurt feelings!

I'm trying to catch up on everything, so I'll go read more.

Poor Cabal. :( I'm glad he's home and okay, and you're with him. I'm not at all good with wounds either... sucking it up and dealing is hard, but you did it with Pod, and you'll do just fine with Cabal.

Fods, I hope there aren't a lot of disturbances he feels like he needs to guard you from. ;/

At 3:18 PM , Blogger Dan Guy said...

Awwww.... Poor Cabal and poor Quiche! Both of you will soldier through this with style, I'm sure.

At 3:28 PM , Blogger AletaMay said...

Ahhh. Sweet Cabal of the shaved leg. I am not at all surprised that there were tears and I am proud that there was no being sick. You are so good at taking the deep breath and doing what must be done. Very inspirational. Please whisper some healing loving words in Cabal's ears from me. Wounds are hard, but I think watching them heal is amazing.

How is Pod the Cat, by the way? Are you still having to do the IV?

At 3:31 PM , Blogger Chantrelle said...

awww, i'm glad he's doing well so far. I'm sure it'll be a day or two before he gets *too* restless!

TV is good for things like this! (sick kids, frankendogs)

At 3:38 PM , Blogger Rubius said...

Good luck, Q. To quote your oh-so-quotable boss 'sometimes there is nothing you can do' (I've been listening to Neil read Neverwhere on my ipod, listening to him narrate is getting me through the hellish commute like nothing else possibly could).

Best wishes for a swift and easy recovery. Poor little franken-pup.

At 3:41 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

DD1 saw the pictures, and keeps saying, "Poor pup-pup!"

It's not pretty, but it's not as bad as I expected. Granted, you did say you didn't post the worst pictures, and that's okay.

I'm not sure which is worse, trying to give a pet a pill, or liquid. Pills, well our animals (dogs AND cats) learned to eat whatever we hid the pill in and then spit the pill out. One cat would just foam at the mouth when given liquid medicine. And you have to give Cabal 3 medicines 4 times a day? {{{{{{Ms. Fabulous}}}}}} It doesn't help that the better he feels, the harder it will be to get the medicine in him. ::SIGH::

Welcome back, Fluffy!

At 3:53 PM , Blogger bengalgirl said...

You may need to cage him for a while so he will not further injure himself. It is difficult to cage but in the long-run better for him.

Poor guy and poor you having to again play nurse.

Mostly he has been lying near me sleeping. I will have to con-head him when I go to bed. If he gets too active tomorrow, I will keep him kenneled on and off, we'll have to see.

I do still IV Pod and she is much better for it!

At 4:05 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Oh, Welcome back Fluffy! We were wondering the other day where you had got to...

Poor Cabel of the Naked Leg!
Some crafty person should knit him a leg cozy.

At 4:15 PM , Blogger Phiala said...

Good for you, Q on dealing even when you aren't sure you can. WE know you can.

Poor puppy - they always look so pitiful without fur, though he actually looks pretty good for just having had surgery. And yes, clingy is quite to be expected. You and he will both be fine! There will be different kinds of hard for the next 6 weeks, but this is probably the hardest for the people. Cabal's hardest part will be the "I feel fine WHY won't you let me do that??" At least that's always Grendel's.

At 4:15 PM , Blogger Stardustgirl said...

Awwww... what a mopey face! Cabal, you're just as handsome with some fur missing and it'll grow back before you know it.

I bet once the loopiness and soreness subside, he'll have a "Hey! I feel lots better now!" happy look on his face.

Enjoy your evening of camping indoors. It's supposed to be yucky wintry down this way. :P

Oh poor sweet Dog! He has the look of "How could you leave me? I missed you so bad!" look in addition to the "what the heck? my leg is shaved!" look. He obviously loves you dogheart and soul!

I hope, for your sake, he is quiet tonight so you can both get some much needed rest, and that tomorrow he is not too fretful. Dogs. What can you do?

At 4:31 PM , Blogger Lindsey Joyce said...

Poor dear. That nearly brought me to tears. You have a big heart Lorraine, and I'm pretty sure that is what enables you to just "DO" the many things you do - not to mention why all these animals in your life trust you to just do them.

At 4:50 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

A leg cozy!!!!! Beyond me , I'm afraid. Dr Wicked, you are doing amazing things on my website!!!Hoping to write you some proper mail tomorrow.

Hi Lindsay! And welcome!

Many thanks all. He is doped to the eyeballs right now, and sort of lifts his head from time to time. I give him scritches and cuddles.

It will be different when he is feeling better that!

At 5:02 PM , Blogger Dragonsally said...

Oh, poor darling. Such a plaintive look on his sweet face. I just want to give him a big hug and gentle scritches. I'm not at all surprised you had a few tears - the whole leg being shaved is so dramatic (I didn't expect that - I thought they'd just shave the inside where they were operating from)
Hope you both cope well {{{{L}}}}{{{{C}}}}

At 5:09 PM , Blogger dabbler said...

Leg cozy can equal cut off arm or motheaten sweater, except...nah, he's probably eat it!

Will read comments later but stopping by to wish you luck, Lorraine (not that you'll actually NEED it).

I'm thinking at some point you ought to be made the patron saint of house pets. How does one begin the canonization procedures again?

At 5:14 PM , Blogger Yoopergurl said...

Poor puppy! Glad things went well and he's eating ok. Hope the weekend goes well for the both of ya. Also hope the bengals don't throw wild parties and empty your bank account while your gone ;)

Lorraine, I'd actually be interested to see the 'yukky' photos, because I strongly suspect Shiraz will be having this surgery done. You have my email address?

At 5:17 PM , Blogger Dragonsally said...

Oh, and Fluffy - its good to see you back here

At 5:21 PM , Blogger Jess said...

Poor puppeh. It's very distressing to look at, I know. When Ally had surgery last year, they didn't cover her wound, either-- they said it'd heal faster uncovered. (Of course, Al ended up with a bandage in the end, after she scratched her stitches out...but hers were in a more accessible area for scratching.) I assume that's why they've left his wound exposed. He'll heal up. And you'll do well with him! You always do well with the critters. :)

A leg cosy would be good. Quick, someone knit something! I know we've got knitters.

Sleeping very early.'Night-morning, all! Happy Weekend!

At 6:51 PM , Blogger Siri said...

Oh, the magnets are back up (what, me afraid of marring things? HA), but I have no camera to take said pictures with - semi-luddite, me.

New fridge's are fun, I got one when I got my Spooky House, just a wee one, as there wasn't a lot of room if I wanted another door put in, but I am really just one person who is not there much for meals, so how big does it need to be? I have a freezer in the basement tho...

Watching Planet Earth, Fods that series was a good one...SEE it, if you haven't, amazing!!!!!!

Fridges WANT magnets and are lonely without them!

At 7:00 PM , Blogger Siri said...

One tried to leave with the old fridge - I went to go out after the delivery, and there was something in the driveway, and it was one of my Avoca Ireland magnets that must have still been on - don't know if the delivery guys threw it down, or it fell off. I laughed, and put it back in the house where it belongs.

About 2" of snow on the ground since 5 PM - hope it stops soon....

At 7:07 PM , Blogger DataGoddess said...

New fridges are so nice - we bought one with our new house 13 years ago, and are leaving it for the buyer. Or at least "the buyer" assuming we get the roof thing straightened out, which requires a day a roofer can get on the one on our 2-story house.

Did I mention on top of the whole MiL dying we finally accepted an offer on the house and are dealing with the joys of the inspection (roof supposedly leaking, it's only 1.5 years old) and a radon level way too high?

Q, I'll join you and Cabal watching TV, I think I'll be up most of the night with the fever/digestive stuff/headache. Bah!

I'm wishing for less interesting times for several of us. Yipes!

Thanks for the welcome backs! Lately I've been trying to sleep all day but my family keeps making me get up and "do things." Dinner, laundry, drive to track practice. Sheesh.

My head has been spinning lately because of the weird Texas weather. It's been 80F one day and then ice storms or just plain cold the next for the past month. Backandforthbackandforth.

Siri, SLRs (single-lens-reflex) are the highest-end cameras because you view your potential shot through the lens instead of a separate viewfinder. I have my old film SLR but my new digital is not. It takes amazing pictures, though. I like to capture the hummingbirds zooming around my feeders and my Panasonic is amazing at getting good images. Then I can make little Flair buttons on Facebook with the pictures.

My family made me get a Facebook page. All the 14-year-old girls in my town are sending me flair. Life is getting more colorful, especially since I have to stay awake for a few hours every day. They are SO strict!

The weather here in Texas has been crazy.

*HUGS* to DataGoddess. I sold my house last summer and went smoothly. We're renting now and so I'm sending my smooth home-process vibes to you!

Just had the most amazing dinner at this little bistro-type restaurant down the road from my place. Guacamole salad, tortilla soup, garlic encrusted shrimp over grilled poblano pepper strips, finished up with a chocolate souffle and accompanied the whole thing with a dry bubbly wine. Delightful.

Now skipping going to a smokey bar with my husband and friends because, vanity of vanities, I just washed my hair. I can't WAIT for them to outlaw smoking in bars here. (sorry to smoking Fiends!)

Some of my most memorable Friday nights -- back in the day -- involved being outside with slightly incapacitated guys while they took... oh never mind.

I'm so glad you and Cabal have settled in.

Work knocked all the stuffing out of me, so I'm watching a movie with my husband, then going to bed.

Too tired to read comments. I'll leave that for the morning... Something to look forward to :-D

At 8:27 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

You want to know how crazy the temperatures have been in Texas lately? It's January 9th, and I have an iris blooming. There was ice on the trees on Monday, and the high today was 80 Fahrenheit. The high tomorrow is supposed to be 54. Next week we're supposed to get some Arctic air, so it isn't going to warm up into the 70s for a while. Maybe.

Na, do you get SciFi channel? If you do, they will be showing the webisodes for Battlestar Galactica during the showing of "Pitch Black" on Thursday, January 15. Then the rest of the series final episodes start Friday, January 16.

At 8:30 PM , Blogger DataGoddess said...

Adri, no fair talking about food that good while I'm dealing with a sick stomach!! ;-)

Thanks for the house-selling vibes, we've been on the market for 6 months, moved out 4 months ago, and accepted an offer that basically took away all our equity. We're renters till Husbeast gets a perm position when he finishes his PhD.

Q, is Cabal trying to lift that leg to pee, or is he smart enough to use another pose? I hope he's taking his meds well.

At 8:34 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Planet Earth is the BEST!

Cabal doesn't do the Lift the Leg pee, he sort of stretches out, which is more than anyone needed to know.

Weird. I thought I had posted before I left the house...

Not exacly a restful night, Cabel kept de-coning and wound up sort of IN bed with me. He's definitely sore poor guy.

I am home for my hour while Merry Housekeeper sits with him, I am tending Bengals. Magic, Lear and Mab are fine, but Venus and Mim are nt happy at all. They were pretty worried when I came in, not happy like they usually are.

I get to have more time with them tomorrow, and will make it right for them.

Peppermint tea, lots of it Dabbler. Feel better!

Morning! I just slept 10 hours. Spiciness of brains nearly restored.

"Planet Earth" yes! "Blue Planet" is more wonderfulness.

ariandalen, I do not have cable. However, this week, I get to travel to So Cal and visit my brother, who does have cable AND Tivo, AND we're planning to go to the BSG Auction preview. Squeeeee! But I didn't know about the Webisodes airing the 15th. w00t! I get to find out just how much BSG I can ingest. Also get to see my bro and SIL and nephew, whom I see entirely too little of. And be warm for a few days. **jumps up and down with glee**

Just now, getting out of the house all on my own for a bit. **more glee**

{{fiends everywhere}} Hope all are having a good weekend, or at the least, finding some solace in it all.

Oh! Poor Cabal and Lo. Scritches to Mim and Venus, poor kits. Healing thoughts to you all.

I can understand the glee, Na, as I have spent a large part of today walking about on my own. The weather wasn't great but still. That never stopped me taking tons of pictures.

Marjorie, that's a great article. I especially like the closing lines:
"Virtual people make the best real friends. And I'll keep saying that till they find my head in someone's freezer."
Must preserve the spicy brains somehow!

Waiting for the frittata to finish cooking in the oven...*tapping fingers*

Good, uh, afternoon, Fiends. I just slept for 11 hours! And the bengals /let/ me! I must really have needed that.

Sounds like various creatures aren't necessarily happy, but doing ok-- which is good!

Chantrelle-- mmm, frittata. I do have lots of veg and eggs...

Marjorie -- I finally got to read the Guardian piece! Wonderful. Thanks for sharing it. I have reposted on my LJ!

Yes, it was the fact that I abandoned them for a DOG that broke their little kitty hearts..

Tuna helped.

I think Cabel is hurting, we are going to go and lie down for a bit.

No one is making ME fritatta.

She says feeling whiny...

At 10:46 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Awww. And I bet they ate all the tuna too. Not that you like tuna. Or do you?

At 10:49 AM , Blogger Marjorie said...

nobody is making me frittata, either.

Poor Cabal. Does he have painkillers?

Glad you're liking the Guardian article - I thought it would strike a chord here!

At 10:50 AM , Blogger Adri said...

I would make frittata for you! Even better than cooking is feeding other people.

I don't think I'm going to attempt it right now, though. I think I'm just going to throw some rice and vegetables together. Going to my in-laws for dinner tonight and it will probably be tons of food.

Looking forward to reading the Guardian article with lunch.

Adri - i love cooking for people, that's really the only way i'm a good host. We have friends staying now and i just tossed their sheets on the bed--they had to make it...i never have any activities planned---except meals!

I made rockin' roasted potatoes this morning too, they turned out really well today. crispy, garlicky...mmm.

We're going to head out to play disc golf in a bit...pretty day here---oh, sorry! Our friends here are from chicago, they're in heaven.

who's going to be in charge of bringing the glad containers for the spicy brains? does that count as a gel or liquid? i think the brains might have to be checked in luggage.

I was planning to bringing mine in a personalised skull (mine)..

Poor pup! Poor Quiche! Poor worried Bengals! :( Hope things are a little better this afternoon.

I want to learn to make a frittata. I've never made one. I keep seeing these recipes where you have to use something like twelve eggs...that seems like way too many eggs to me. Even for a frittata.

Recipes! Spread the eggy wisdom, Chantrelle! ;)

Hope everyone is having a fine day! We haven't had all the snow they predicted yet. I'm guessing Phiala got it all.

I used 12 eggs today but that was for four people. usually for the three of us I use eight eggs (one of us is only 4 so the math isn't precise).

I'll post a frittata recipe to Foodporn soon. I didn't take a picture of it so it'll have to wait a bit!

I just posted a recipe for my favorite fish with Israeli couscous dish yesterday.

Poor Cabal! Hope he's doing okay and that he has a full and speedy recovery.

Not in the same league *at all*, but my girlie - Taika - ripped the skin off a couple of her pads recently, but was still pawing at her harness when I put my boots on to go out...getting her to rest was a trial.

Hello the Fiends!! Oh how I've missed you, and so many new delurkers! I've been blasted at work so that I've hardly been able to keep up with posts whatever about comments. All the highs and lows of animals and humans, captured right here - helps me to keep things in perspective.

A few random thoughts, some going back quite a while....

grace - reading about your adventures teaching one-on-one reminded me of my own experience doing youth work and one guy I felt I never reached on any level. Nearly ten years later, with no contact, and out of the blue he sends me a friend request on FaceBook with a perfectly normal "How's things with you" message. All you teachers, parents, carers, nurturers (of humans and animals), you ARE making a positive difference with every kind word and gesture and feather stick, and every time you stop to really listen.

ticia - thanks for posting the goldenagecomicbookstories link, I love Edmund Dulac! He's right up there with Rackham and Burne-Jones and Harry Clarke.

ariandalen - loved the Morcheeba vid; I adored their early stuff, saw an *amazing* live gig, but then they took a path I wasn't quite so enamoured with; glad to hear they're back on form.

For the Crafty Fiends: Punk Knits and Creepy Cute Crochet: Zombies, Ninjas, Robots, and More!

And finally, if only for the bee picture, Little People Street Art

love & scritches, speshly to Cabal xxx

Jess, I didn't get all of it, but plenty. Just finished shoveling - some days I wish I didn't have a corner lot. I've now got nearly all the ice chipped away, after several days of working on it - hard on the arms. I'm now taking a break with tea and christmas cookies snitched from the bag in the freezer.

Um, haven't dug the car out yet. Since before the ice storm part. Not going to be fun; may not go anywhere until spring.

I hope Cabal is doing okay, and that his meds are making him sleep a lot. I hope Lorraine is doing okay taking care of Cabal.

Good, uh, afternoon, Fiends. I just slept for 11 hours!

Wow, me, too! The Spouse let me because I got a migraine at about 2 a.m. Here's a cat/headache story - Binky, the big back kitty, likes to sleep on top of me when she's lovey, and since I sleep on my side it can be precarious so I wedge a pillow in front of me to handle the, er, overflow. Well, I needed the spare pillow on top of my head last night (to keep it from esploding) so Binky just stomped around on me with her hard feet, looking for her sleeping space, and making a lovely situation even lovelier. I decided to keep a spare spare pillow by the bed just in case.

It's cold again here, but I'm not complaining after reading y'alls' posts. I remember digging the cars out when we lived up North. Brrr. Keep warm!

I want a frittata too.

Ginger tea is really good, too!

My dog had ligament torn on same leg but had bands and not pins and plates. They said if she gets pins and plates on one leg, she most likely needs it on the other leg later. I didn't want to put my dog under twice. Band worked great.

Surprised to see Cabal lying on his left leg. My dog didn't do that for a while.
