Recovery Continues...

Not a great deal to report on here today. Cabel is doing as well as can be expected, he's coughing, which is odd, not sure what that's about, may put in a call tomorrow to the U-vets, and he is in a lot of pain, despite the Zombie-state inducing Doggie Pain meds.

Mostly he seems content to sleep, but if I get up, he does too, so I am trying to stay quiet myself, and not move around a lot.

Which means I get to read and watch TV. Did office things earlier, but he follows me, limping along behind, when I am not on the couch and worries I will Go Somewhere leaving him alone and sick. Poor dude. So we be quiet.

Not all bad, I got to see the Animal Planet Showjumping thingie, which was great. (Including Bruce Springsteens daughter Jessica, who knew?) Those people can RIDE, I tell you that.

Also Point Break, a movie I have always loved, but never been sure why.

Cabel is Looking at me, sadly, and it is time for another pill, which has been going better than I had thought, thanks to chicken and cream cheese. And then, hopefully he will do some more sacking out. Woodsman Hans is coming tomorrow so I can have some Bengal time and Riding Time, which is good, as both are sorely needed.

(Venus and Mim do not like this me being away thing. AT all. And when they found out I had left them for a DOG of all things, there little hearts wept. I am going to have some serious making up to do, this I know. Magic, Lear, and Mab were fine, as they don't get to see me as much, and were like, "Hey it's her! Tuna! She rocks" Venus and Mim were much more"Don't think you are getting off THAT easy!!!!")

And finally, This is why we love Eddi Izzard......

Love and Wuunds,
Lorraine

Scritches for Cabal and hot tea for Lorraine

That Guardian article is spot on.

Explains why we're all here everyday and why the first thing I do with my first cup of tea in the morning is check in :)

Eddie rocks.

Poor pupster, with his mournfiul eyeballs. :( Get that coughing checked out. I know in cats it can in some instances mean a heart murmur-- but that's not the only thing it can mean, nor are we talking dogs. So I don't know whether that's a reasonable thing to even consider in Cabal's case. But it's always better to ask the vet than not, it seems to me. Hang in there! You're a good Alpha.

Poor guy. Too bad he doesn't understand when you explain you'll be right back.

*sigh* MiL passed peacefully this afternoon, with her husband and 2 daughters at her side. She'd been unconscious and non-responsive for over 24 hours. Husbeast seems to be ok, but I'm keeping a close watch for moments he needs hugs. He's one of those who are strong until the crisis is over, then falls apart if needed. Not real sure what form "falling apart" will take.

I'm still feeling like death, haven't been able to keep anything, including water, down since this morning.

Geeze, I sound pitiful. The crises can all stop anytime, and we can return to our boring life.

At 5:28 PM , Blogger DataGoddess said...

Oh, and Cabel's cough, do get that checked out, it can also be congestive heart failure in dogs - ask me how I know :-( Of course, it's probably nothing or something minor.

At 5:45 PM , Blogger Phiala said...

Poor thing - it's hard to be a puppy and feel very strongly about things but not understand them.

DataGoddess, I'm sorry but relieved about your MiL, if that doesn't sound callous (it isn't meant to be, I'm just not sure how exactly to express it). I'm also concerned about your virus - not good! Pedialyte, though nasty, is a good thing to try to drink, maybe diluted. Hopefully the bug will pass quickly (the stress can't be helping).

At 5:57 PM , Blogger DataGoddess said...

Phiala, your feelings match pretty much everyone in the familiy's feelings on the subject. Some deaths are blessings because the person is no longer suffering.

That's been the hardest part these last few days, knowing that she was suffering (although they kept her whacked out on morphine) and not being able to do anything about it. When she was conscious, that first night in hospice, she expressed a wish for things to end sooner. The fact that she was unconscious the last day+ is also a blessing.

And the black humor has been flying the whole time, including things from her. Laughter beats the hell out of crying.

I may call my doc tomorrow and see about some phrengren, if this doesn't ease up. Part of the problem is Husbeast has it to, is a little more recovered than I am, but I wouldn't trust him to drive right now, either. Hopefully one of us will be up for actually leaving the house soon.

Times like this I'm really glad I telecommute, I can still be sick monday and work.

Datagoddess -- sucks so much that both you and he are sick at the same time and dealing with his mom'e death. I am sure it is good to know that that part is over. I am glad to here that there has been laughter in the midst of the tough stuff. Both laughing and crying are impotant for our health I think.

Poor Quichie and Pupper and Oh-so-neglected Bengals.

I third or fourth the calling about the cough, although it can sometimes just be a leftover thing from the anesthesia. I'm sure he's on heavy duty antibiotics in all that medicine, but still- worth a call.

DataGoddess - I'm so sorry to hear of all your troubles. :( Stomach flu is downright evil. 7-up, and just plain old sleeping for about 3 days fixed me up. Not fun, but frighteningly it's preferable to food poisoning. :P

FabLo - do check with the vet about Cabal's cough, but chances are it might be from them putting a tube in his throat when he was under anesthesia. It's normal, but better safe than sorry.

Eddie Izzard IS cool!

At 6:35 PM , Blogger EmilyLady said...

I certainly am learning much about cats from this blog. I had no idea they could have such amazingly different personalities.

Hoping Cabal feels better soon.

At 6:37 PM , Blogger bengalgirl said...

The coughing might be due to the tube in his throat. Little Aashi started acting like she had a sore throat, gagging, and finally coughing and I took her in to see my Vet. He said her throat was irritated due to the intubation tube from her spay surgery. She is doing great now, only last 4 days.

I suppose you could try explaining to the "girls" why you are gone but I have found most bengals don't care, you are their servant and their needs come first.

My Vet's office was to clip Simba's claws when he was neutered yesterday and evidently they FORGOT, so I will call to remind them and bring him in for a freebie. He has horrible claws and no way in the world can I hold him to clip. He is a WILD MAN.

I know from experience how hard it can be to wait for an ill loved one to die. I'm glad that you MiL's death came relatively quickly, though there was enough time for family to say anything that needed to be said. Please know that you, your husband, and everyone involved has absolutely no need to feel guilty for feeling relief at her death. Focus on getting yourself and your husband over the icky virus.

*snugs* where needed

I love how this community bands together. that article about online friends was spot on. i love my online friends. I've had so many great experiences meeting online friends irl. i've lost touch with most people i was friends with in school, but i've had some of my online friends for at least half my life now. granted there is always that possibility of the crazies, but i find it becomes too much to keep up a personality online and hide your true nature. Eventually you are left with kindred spirits.

At 8:41 PM , Blogger Dragonsally said...

Vampi, that was really well said. It was only in August that Pete's mum passed on and I still feel pretty numb about it, if I put feelings into words.

Data Goddess, sad as the news is it is best for al. Now I hope you too can recover from the flue. Sorrow is never really completely recovered from alas.

In other news, here we are already the 11th (good mornevening everyone) so Happy Birthday Lexocat!

At 9:18 PM , Blogger CarolAnn said...

Cabal's coughing may be from the tube that was in his throat for his anesthesia. I would call the vet and make sure, though.

MacGregor had a bunch of Rimadyl following his ACL surgery but sometimes it didn't seem to be enough. After the first week things settled out, and at about 10 days I was having to practically sit on him to keep him still. It took about six months for the surgery to completely heal, but in about six weeks he was tramping around like his old goofy self again.

Good for Eddie!

Poor zombie doggie. Good to hear the pills are going down without a fuss. At least the meds are keeping him from bounding around.
And poor Venus and Mim too, they miss their Mom-time.

Ah, Eddie, he's the best. It doesn't surprise me that he'd do something like that, he's got six, count 'em SIX planets in Aquarius in his birth chart, making him the Uber Aquarius. Aquarians are all about community and humanitarian causes and suchlike.
And I'll stop babbling now, kthanxbai

Hi Nathalie! Must be morning there? Will you be going out taking pics some more? :)

I just went back to read the Anna Pickard Guardian Article. Excellent food for thought, the comments included. I wasn't online as much, before falling down the Fiend rabbit hole. It's so much fun in here. It fascinates me, and reassures me maybe, to learn so many people all over the globe are part of the phenomenon. Very interesting. Going off to think deep thoughts... well, no. Maybe just to sleep. But first... facebooking. Ha ha. Actually, on facebook, I have reconnected with several good friends from other eras of my life. That's another positive aspect of online socializing.

Hugs to you Toni, even when prepared, you're never really prepared. I tend to laugh and incredibly inappropriate times because that's the way i cope...did you see the Giggle-loop episode of coupling? That would happen to me.

I have some really good friends that are Aquarians...love them dearly.

I'm Capricorn however...2 days 'til my 35th :D Ben told hubby that i should have a coraline birthday and I won't argue! It'll be a late birthday party though, probably at soup night in a couple of weeks. I am expecting a cake with black buttons, thank you.

Obviously they did not know ME very well. ;)

More scritches and hugs to Cabal; poor guy.

At 1:52 AM , Blogger Lexocat said...

DataGoddess, my condolences to you and Husbeast. I remember all the complex (and contradictory) feelings when my dad died. It took a while to sort through it all. I also hope you start feeling better physically...and soon!

Cabal seems like such a sweetheart and emotes so well in photos (and in life, I would guess). It's hard to hear of him in pain, poor guy. He is SO lucky you're around. Same could be said of more than just Cabal, too.

Um, brain slowing down (am I losing spice?) so I'm forgetting what else I wanted to say. Either that, or I should just need to walk away from the computer already and get to bed.

Need to read the rest of the comments, the Guardian article and the Eddie Izzard story (glanced at it a couple days ago and read enough to agree this is why we love him).

Oh, and I learned this year that the whole Facebook team wishes me a Happy Birthday. Says so right on my home page. Yep, another Capricorn fiend with a firbday today. Will send firbday good wishes to Chantrelle for tomorrow before I forget (no cracks about the aging process catching up with me!)

G'night, Fiends.

Toni, much love and sympathy heading your way. You and family will need to grieve in your own time and your own ways, and I do hope that you will all find comfort in knowing that you were able to be there with her, and that she was (and was able to say) that she was ready to go. I do hope you all start to recover from the physical bugs swiftly, too.

Q - hugs and scritches for Cabal & you - my first thought when I read about the cough was that it was most likely related to the anaesthesia - hope vet is able to reassure, and that C has a good night and feels more comfortable soon.

Eddie Izzard rocks! And I notice that it's only in the news because the guy's father reported it...

Endless Poppets and Boss Poppet - I saw, I lusted, I decided that if I was to come to Fiendstock in June I really can't afford them - but may console myself with a steampunk poppet instead.

We gave the bed to the beautiful daughter when she moved from the dorm into a house, thinking we would buy a new bed. We were wrong. It's futons on the floor, oh yeah. So I'd be *perfect* for taking care of Cabal!! :-) Too bad I'm too far away.

Data -- glad to hear that you are feeling better. Hope that trend continues...

I think the funniest line was this one, for obvious reasons...

"A market local official told AFP news agency guards would start handing out strict guidelines to visitors."

Fluffy, I'm not sure they can dig a hole in the ground right now. Even one small enough to put the fish in. Nice thought. :)

The first six years or so DH and I lived together, we slept on a mattress on the floor. The firmness was wonderful, the getting up from the floor first thing in the morning wasn't. Now we sleep on a nice high king size bed on a frame.

At 11:54 AM , Blogger Marjorie said...

Poor fishie. It's wierd, becasue I was reading some of the archive today and had just read a post about buying fish, and taking them back because they were dead, then I came back and saw dead fish notification. I used to have fish in the garden, but two of them died after some kids threw soap over the fence, and the last one killed itself a week or so later. I don't have fish any more.

Chantrelle - new baby should be fun, and I'd guess your friends will keep you pretty busy, but if you have time and would like to it would be fun to try to meet up. I don't know East Sussex very well, although my sister sometimes lives on a boat in West Sussex (when she's not living in Turkey)

Futons - I had one when I bought my first house - I'd ordered a proper bed, then the bed warehouse phoned the day I moved in to say their warehouse had burned down so I wouldn't be getting my bed. Friend and I had to make a mad dash to Ikea to buy a futon, as i couldn't afford anything else.

I learned:

1. Futon can be comfortable to sleep on; and
2. If you have only 2 people, and have to put together a bed/futon frame from Ikea it is a good idea to drink the house-warming champagne AFTER building the bedframe, not before.

Lorraine, good luck with the bed, bengals, and returning before Hans and Cabal go stir crazy. Sorry about your fish.

"May his fishy soul be flushed to a better place." Ha! Jess, I'm totally stealing this. Though I suppose it's a better fate than being ridden like a tuna (wtf?)

Phiala, can hardly wait to see the work of extra spicy brains...

Vampi, ouch! He SO owes you. Big.

DG, yay for feeling better.

Ticia, you've just convinced me I'd make a very poor Austrian indeed.

Ariandalen, thanks for the good wishes.

Off to buy appliances now. No, really, it's a good thing.

After i return form Portland, i completely volunteer to come sleep on the floor. our guy Cabal will be on the mend, but it will be a far cry from 6 weeks. Sign me up. Drew can take care of Miss Selina Kyle. I am sending you a photo of her highness, I know you miss her. She is the ruler around here. FLings herself right down on Mr. Batman. he just wakes up for a minute and goes back to sleep with her at his side.

Data G, it is a planetary time of change, many lives are winding down, many relationships are ending, many new doors are opening. It doesn't make anything easier, but knowing you are part of the big cycle, makes it a little less lonely. You have my most positive thoughts, lady. & love to the husbeast.

and SUE! i gotta post your adorable snow bunny photo, ***the blogger whip cracks in back ground**

Yes, it was a fine idea for buriel, but we can't exactly dig, and while, when Boss's kids were young, we DID keep a hamster and a guniea pig in the freezer all winter for proper burial in the spring, not sure I am willing to go there. Might tho, it was a good fish. Swam, ate, lurked in his skull cave.

Oh, Happy Day to you Lexo!!!!!!

Kitty, we will take you up on that offer to be sure!!!!!

Please send Selena Kyle pics! I will post her and Batman!!!!!!

a violin made of ice. I was going to say cool, but that would be too pun-ish.
Catching up on comments is a nice way to wake up, when you're up ultra early to take car to mechanics.
Now, off to breakfast

At 12:45 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

It's the IceMusic Festival of Geilo, in Norway (they have been at it for 4 years now). They do concerts at night in the open air in the middle of winter. And people come to listen to the music because the instruments are carved in ice (but the cords of the violin or on the harp are obviously the real thing). The music is really experimental and improvised because they never know how the cold will affect the instruments (the festival lasts for 3 days. Or nights.) They have horns and flutes (these must be tricky to play and not melt. I suppose in such artic temperature the blown air doesn't stay warm very long but how do they avoid the freezing dampness not to block the pipes after a while?), all sorts of percussions (so fragile!) and also cords. These, like the violin and harp shown on the slide show (the buttons above the picture) are new for this year. One member of the public, interviewed, claims that the instruments are capable of very warm tonalities, despite the fact that the instruments are made of ice.

I keep thinking that the musicians must freeze their fingers off!

That Helsinki Complaints Choir is great! I saw one for Birmingham too but it is nowhere as nice.

At 12:58 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

Surely someone has recorded at least part of one of those ice concerts. I'm not saying that said person has uploaded it anywhere; I just want to hear it, preferably without going to Norway in the middle of winter.

At 1:06 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Of course someone did!

At 1:36 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

Thanks for the links, Marjorie and Nathalie! Interesting. :)

DH picked up an old Residents vinyl album twenty-five years ago or so. It is based on Inuit/Eskimo tales and a shaman trying to protect the soul of a child that had died. One of the instruments purportedly used was a frozen dog skull. I haven't listened to it in at least twenty years, mainly because it's pretty disturbing. Maybe I'll dig it out; then again, maybe not.

At 1:43 PM , Blogger dabbler said...

I SO want to sing that complaint song...in English...
Thanks much, I've sent it on to a groups of women I used to sing with regularly...

At 1:48 PM , Blogger Marjorie said...

I love the complaint song! I think the Helsinki one was first, and then they took the same concept to other cities - Birmingham, Hamburg, Chicago etc - I think that they did it by asking people to drop in suggestionst for complaints, and then made the song out of them http://www.complaintschoir.org.

But I think Helsinki is still the best! How else would one learn how to say "It's not fair" in Finnish?

Get better soon Marjorie! So many down with something this week. Thinking about what Kitty said. Also that this was the week that seemed to last. for. ever. and followed the Most Stressful Day of the Year.

Fiend Moot. Fiend Follies. Like the Fission Frisson. :)

We had something nearly a blizzard here today. Very pretty! From indoors, that is. Thinking about baking something, as excuse to have on and stay near a warm oven.

Of we could rephrase one of favourite sentence starters: "Come To The Revolution -- Worldwide Fiends Uniting '09". :-)

Back to lesson planning...

(Adri, I agree -- no budget meetings ever on Sundays. In fact, come the revolution, that will be one of the first mandates!!)

Though, I suppose some people might say it is the

Fusion of the Fabulous Fiends.

I brought the subject up to DH. At first he winced, then he thought about it when I mentioned we could go to his parents via Minneapolis for a few days. This means there would be four of us in one room; two adults and two under 8.
