ok, busy for a few days, and lots and lots of comments to catch up on! Gayle, a belated happy birthday, love the pickle :). and we got some good storms this evening - Lorraine, hope some of the visited you first. It was blasted hot here today, and if i had a shirt/skirt it sure as heck would have been on. And we shall swarm, we shall to a new site full of Dan and Pantagruels webby and artistic goodness!

At 8:10 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Nope. Won't sue you. Want more.

The storms DID miss us!!! It was SO unfair, I was all ready, and they slipped by, close enough to see...Sigh.

There's always tomorrow for dreams to come true....

Skirt dresses are the best, tho one tends to feel a little silly when people drop by, as they have been all night, but no one seems to care, it's nearly 90 and HUMID!

Re-wrote Bonnie Rait's "Something to talk about" tonight, in lieu of actual writing. May post it. It makes me laugh.

At 8:19 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

And oh, yes, the new site will be FULL of wonderful spooky things. You will love it. It will feel just like the home you always wanted, secretly, to live in....

Sometimes you just got to swarm!

And remember, nothing has really changed, THIS site, nor Malena, nor I, are going anywhere.

Just a little re-decorating!

go wail at their god

kind eyes a big hat
meteor showering shirt:
what kitty looks like

which one will lorraine open?
the left one at last

bat cookies and wine --
making summer nights purple
sticky lush and sweet

Dear Kitty hold on!
The whirlwind will soon let up,

And talent like yours

A Haiku Cycle for Kitty
------------------------

Bus-bound refugees.
Can't sleep; the fans will eat you.
Modern day Bacchae.

They come out at night:
the tween zombie groupie hordes,
Disney-infected.

They scratch at the walls
and slap against the windows
-- you locked the door, right?

But wait, what is this?
Salvation arrives feline!
Kitty, protect us!

She clears off the bus
with lightning fast reflexes,
repelling zombies.

Posing a moment,
then jumps back into the fray,
pushing it further.

The Jonas now safe,
she retreats to her palace
to sharpen her knives.

Sleep, little heart-throbs;
tomorrow is a new day
full of girls wailing.

You can rule the world
via TV and tour bus,
but Cat *always* rules.

That one actually wasn't a haiku, since it's just a sentence broken up into lines of syllables, and doesn't mention a season, and lacks a caesura. Also, no comparison, association, or contrast in that. So it does not count.

No, it is a report from the trenches and plea for more time in the day.

Given my brain it ought to be an interesting music day.

Must post a pack of T-shirts, one of them is Lam! Very fun!

(I suppose if anyone here wants that one and isn't going to San Diego, let me know and I will pull it. CBLDF is selling them there, 100 used T's, all of Bosses, and signed by him. $50, all to the CBLDF)

Last.fm went live with their beta, and they've got lots of problems. As a couple of you know, I'm ariandalen there, too.

Maybe tomorrow I'll write some englyn milwr for Ms. Kitty. It is a Welsh form of poetry also known as soldier's englyn. It is a poem of three lines, seven syllables each and all rhyme.

The signed La'M shirt is tempting, but we've got two really big bills to pay this month, and I'm not talking about gasoline and electricity. ::sigh:: This, too, shall pass.

At 9:00 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Ah, that explains it. It was very slow today too, and failed to connect a of of the time. We shall wait for the bugs to get worked out. Fods, I do love that site! It was MADE for me...All the music ever, all the time...

I like this Welsh poetry idea, hadn't heard of it, we should try some. (says the women who should be working on her book, sigh)

I do know about bills, ye gads, they pop up!

At 9:38 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Englyns! Fod, I never thought I would have to write those again when I learned them. There are 13 kinds, right? (Have I mentioned my writing program was sadistically thorough? Though, they did not succeed in beating 'Dude' out of me. Ha!)

Making coffee is fiendishly difficult when you've not had any yet in the morning. Why must it be so hard?

If you want, as I'm packing up all my books, I'll pull out any books on poetry forms I still have that I did not burn gleefully.

The thing is, all the hellish bits of university aside -- a degree does not automatically make you a writer. Well, the degree and the Secret Department Parties (although I'm sworn to silence about what goes on there).

I'll email you more in a sec.

Does anyone here know what a Tanka verse is? It's one of my favorite forms of poetry but seems to be on the verge of disappearing. It's older than Haiku (!) but is very similar -- five lines; five (or less) syllables; seven (or less) syllables; five (or less) syllables; seven (or less) syllables, and seven (or less) syllables.

So, five or less, seven or less, five or less, seven or less, seven or less.

~Emily

At 7:44 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Not disappearing.
I encounter them often enough on One Single Impression.
Most people are more comfortable with the form since it allows extended message.

At 7:47 AM , Blogger gaypet said...

Please, Lorraine, tells us the story.

I have gone back to finish my B.A. in English. I am enjoying it so much more this time around! It's harder because I have a young son (he being the reason I went back) and it's hard to find time to study. However, sitting around talking about Literary Criticism (known as Lit Crit which I think sounds dirty ;D) with a room full of other people is SO fun. I am a terrible writer and a degree is not going to change that! It's the intellectual stimulation that I find hard to come by outside of the classroom. My friends don't want to argue with me about why the narrator of "The Tell-Tale Heart" could be a woman. Ya know?

At 7:50 AM , Blogger ivenotime said...

what an education this blog is! I have no real knowledge of poetry, having been a business major first, then art. I find it fascinating - more please! I feel very literary deficient :) Lorraine - would love to hear your story, there are many different paths and roads to follow - mine was traditional, i was too afraid of my mother's wrath and disappointment to deviate or stray from what was laid out for me :(

At 8:10 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I will tell you my story, if you like, but it will have to wait until tonight, as this day is beyond busy work-wise, we will just have to enlighten eachother on poetry, music and books for the daylight hours...

And yes, more please!

At 8:22 AM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Spacedlaw -- Yep, senryū is what most people wrote here. You could argue that the whole project is renga, though.

Emily -- tanka is not disappearing at all, never fear. It's alive and well in many places, including here.

Gaypet -- Lit Crit is all fun and games until someone brings up Baudrillard. Then, you must deploy the tactic of making them buy every round until they shut up. You might enjoy "How to Deconstruct Almost Anything -- My Postmodern Adventure." Don't drink anything while you read it.

Oh Pantagruel... that page left me in tears... hilarious. I remember the urge to go screaming in the opposite direction every time someone brought Derida up in my Lit classes in Uni. I hated it... all that postmodern, deconstructionalist nonsense. Sigh, and I wanted to like that class.. and my Lit teacher even impressed me with his love of Buffy... but I couldn't handle the Derida. Heck, 81 is a record! But I agree, let's hit 100, in the time it takes me to do a new blog.

WHich given my brain could be a bit, tho I am home now. Long long day. The funniest thing was getting a note from a player I have been wanting to have sit in at a show for some time now, saying he would be coming down tomorrow night.

News to me I had a show, but there it is on the schedule!

I would be in Cabal's Cabal. He had a play date today and is having the play date dog over for a sleep over next thursday.

Malena, I love your Haiku!!!!!!!!! I think you may have won, despite a COMPLETE and utter disregard for the proper form of Haiku. But you did it with such joy!

(Haiku are three lines, first one 5 syllables , second 7 and third line 5 again)

You may be right about the Queen Bee. Was the Boy Bee larger than a regular worker? Drones have ONLY one purpose in life: FInd a Queen, mate and die.

She, ungreatful thing, takes 5 or 6 lovers then spends her life having kids and being tended by her minions.

Bees are weird.

Lorraine, don't worry about the "complete and utter disregard" when the Japanese are far more relaxed about the syllabic boundaries. Theirs tend to be less exact than ours (and I know this as fact rather than simply from reading the English translations). Haiku does not have to be five-seven-five!

ooo 90 posts. ten more! malena, loved your poem! giggle - Lorraine, I have a window with small holes in the screen for the same reason. i hide keys on the property too, but my kids use them and never put them back, leaving me the dork to climb into a window. once i had to take out the (small) air conditioner. but how nice you have neighbors to hang with outside, what a great way to spend a warm summer evening.

While we were outside, Michaela got word her step mother fell thru her porch and was in the ER (doesn't sound serious) and she said "Hmm..ER or Blog???" so she nipped in quickly and posted (I had told her the 100 story..)

Just doing her part. love this block, our backyards are all kind of connected and we do like to hang out at the end of the day.

Michaela is a REALLY fine piano player, and actress, so we end up hanging more often than not.

ALWAYS locking myself out, she grumbles. One feels so silly climbing in a window....

93 , my friends! Let me write Kitty tonight that her Haiku blog hit 100!

Oddly enough the second closest was the My Day In Church Blog...

If you've never posted before, come be a part of this...

(So sad for Europe and New Zealand, sorry all of you, sleeping away...)

Please tell me that Ms. Fabulous has not hurt her knee climbing in through the window. ::sigh::

My brain is all blurry. My DH has been out of town since late Monday night, so I've had to deal with my two daughters by myself most of the week. We will be going to a graduation ceremony this weekend. One of my best friends is "walking the stage" to receive her MBA, which she's been working on for several years online. She still has a couple of classes to finish, but they told her she was eligible to participate in graduation.

It was unremittingly
bleak bleak -- a downer.

::sigh:: I actually had to get out my Rhyming dictionary. Been a long time since I have used it.

The problem with using poetic forms from other cultures is that those forms were created for that culture's (Japanese or Welsh in our case) language. It doesn't necessarily scan as well in English.

Yet my BA is in Communication Arts. Which is a really fancy way of saying Theatre, Speech and Media.

Nope, I am fine, have this climbing thru the window down to an art form,,,,,

Andriandaln, I feel for you, and it is HOT down there now, isn't it? I know I am weary of this heat...

I feel the same way about Dark Night..Fod bless Heath, would it have the impact if he was alive? Smell an Oscar...but am so much way more exited about Hellboy, which I also haven't managed to see.....

So close now.....Let me post the new blog and go to BED! Boss left WAY too early this morning...And apparently I have a gig tomorrow night...

Someone crawls out of bed at the break of down, feeds the wee beasties and sits down to their computer and finds out that 38 comments have managed to pop in through the night!

Mah.
Well done, all.

Sleeping for Kitty,
Dreaming of love and peace.
Summer birds twittering.

Wow. I just got home from an evening out and this thread has eaten... Tokyo or Cincinnati or some city.

I was at a party hosted by friends who are about to leave for India for three months. We hung out in their back yard and watched movies projected on the side of the garage -- one of our favorite summertime activities.

One of the movies we watched was Bubba Ho-Tep. To say this is a quirky movie would be a massive understatement. Has anyone here seen this film? I really loved it. Elvis and JFK (played by Ozzie Davis) as senior citizen mummy fighters. Amazing.

I will get right on that drinking, tomorrow.

Havn't seen that movie but hanging in the yard sounds great!

Aleta, I've never even HEARD of that movie, but now I've read your description I want to see it.

(spent yesterday in a friend's garden drinking Pimms, so only just got back and read the amazing everlasting comments thread...!)
