The Return of Pansy and Violet!

We got a visit from Emma Bull and Will Shetterly today, which was, as usual, delightful. Emma, you may remember, is my bandmate from the Flash Girls, who, if I do say so myself, spent a fair amount of time lighting the world on fire some years ago. We did three cd's together too, two of which are still available. The first, may it rest in peace, we were so new then, hee-hee...But I remember it fondly. It shows up on ebay every so often and goes for around $300, believe it or not.

We even won a Minnesota Music Award, way back in 1993, our first year out. "Best World Folk Act" Not exactly sure what that is, but I was glad to have gotten it. Our fourth gig, (the first three were Coffee Houses) was opening for a sold out Warren Zevon show. I think that was the point the phrase " A little trial by fire never hurt anyone " was coined.

I took them over to the Spooky House Bengal Zoo, of course, to meet the Beasties, saying before we went that I had no idea what they might have done in my absence. Half kidding. Sort of.

All went well until we went upstairs, and found that they had not only dumped the box of cat litter OVER, but had then managed to EMPTY it ALL over the bathroom floor. WHY??? I clean the darn boxes every day. And they have three for the two of them. I can sort of figure out some of the things they do, like getting into the cupboards and pulling out all the food, or jumping on top of the cupboards and knocking over my candles, scattering glass everywhere, I mean , that stuff is FUN, but this?????

As we looked at the mess, Venus came in and uh, USED the litter box. (The litter IN the box, thankfully) she then went into the bedroom and in full view of everyone, did that thing cats do where they plop their butts down and scoot across the floor with their front paws, effectively, uh, wiping her butt.

They never do these things when we are alone. They save them up until I have company. We laughed so hard I cried.

I could have talked with her for hours, we had so much to say, so many stories to tell, so much to catch up on. Yes, we did talk about doing a show together, and yes, we did think it would be a good idea if Malena was there too. (Emma got in many a good joke about how I seem to find beautiful, tall, dark haired women to play with, and make me feel short)

(I say I would never have thought a girl could get so lucky twice in one lifetime, I love them both so, and to be on stage with both of them, would be the most magic ever...)

It wasn't long enough, not by half, but the visit sure did make me happy.

Lots of adventures today. If you haven't been by Boss's blog, go and have a look. I learned on the Internet that no matter how cute baby raccoons are, you do NOT want to take them in and be their Mommy. Cabal did great at dog school and I got home early enough to take Venus and Mim out walking. (THAT is true Adventure Land...)

Love and Friends,
Lorraine

YEH for catching up with dear friends - sounds like you had a marvelous day, and you both look great in the pics! I do believe raccoons would be more destructive than bengals, those claws are quite sharp. and I cannot fathom why any cat would dump their litter box - our problem is that our dogs adore cat poo. it creates the most disgusting dog breath. did you get your cookies sent? I thought rubius' marshmallow idea was quite sweet (punny, eh)?

Cookies will go off Fed Ex on Friday to Kitty, for delivery before noon Saturday, and hopefully will be some sugary frosting goodness for the Party...

The first thing I thought about when I saw those little bundles of cuteness - after squeeing in delight - was "I hope for Lorraine's sake, that Neil will NOT want to adopt those racoons" because, of course, who would end up having to look after them?

Great to meet Emma. I love the music that you girls did together (and it sounded like you had fun doing it too).
Naughty bengals...

Whew! I missed a day or two and had to catch up 2 posts and all of the comments.:) I think I'm scared of what I'll find when I get back from vacation on the first.;)

Yeah you don't want to be a raccoon mommy..they have opposable thumbs (or at least close enough). The are oh so cute, but verrrry destructive. They like to run away with shiny things, like say, keys.

Yay for seeing Emma and Will, they're two of my favorite writers.:) And if you can get Emma AND Malena on one stage I SO wanna be there.

Tricksy Bengalses...you'd think they'd plotted against you.;)

$300!

I wonder how much my copy your boss signed would go for...

And if I had been smart enough to bring it to Balticon and have you sign it...

At 4:07 AM , Blogger Phiala said...

Raccoons are evil, no matter how cute they are! Not pets, definitely not pets...

Your day sounds like wonderful fun, good enough that you could laugh abou the cats' less-than-perfect company manners.

All of the known-to-me Flash Girls music can be acquired from Amazon now. The CD may go for $300 on Ebay (must be exciting!), but the mp3s are $8.99. Which is wonderful, since Pansy and Violet is my favorite. :)

At 7:18 AM , Blogger Dan Guy said...

Were the Bengals any more accepting of Emma and Will than they were of me? Hopefully they were smart enough to not do anything with dangly cords, and avoided my fate.

Venus is craaaaaazy!

At 7:28 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

No that Miss Malena Mim is so much more reasonable...

At 7:42 AM , Blogger AletaMay said...

It really is amazing that you have found such good people to make music with over the years. It would be amazing to see you and Emma and Malena together on stage.

AND speaking of seeing you on stage -- I just noticed that you and Paul will be doing a gig in MY stomping grounds for once! Tom's is great! Have you played there before? It has a vibe that reminds me a lot of how Half-Time Rec used to be -- only smaller and cozier.

Anyway I am sure we'll be pulling together quite a group for one or both shows being as it is so close!

At 7:47 AM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Hrm, I shall have to get the Flash Girls music, now!

Spacedlaw, I thought the same thing: saw the raccoon babies, and wondered, 'How long until they show up in Lorraine's blog? And which side of the Feral Feud will they be on?'

You should send Cabal with the bat cookies in your place -- if he didn't happily eat them, of course.

At 8:10 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Yes, Aleta, we are playing the new place this weekend! Glad to hear it's nice, PLEASE do come and bring people, we need a good crowd!

Cabal can't be sent to Malena's show with the cookies, he has SEVERE separation anxiety and would most likely eat them all. We are going to trust Fed Ex.

Well, Dan, they weren't exactly thrilled by Will and Emma, tho they didn't object as strongly to them as they did to you, you got the FULL treatment, and they were only here for an hour.

At 8:25 AM , Blogger Phiala said...

The raccoons will be on their own side; don't trust them, though they try to lull you with those cute little masked faces.

At 8:34 AM , Blogger Dan Guy said...

A new player in the game, eh?

Very well, Raccoon Sirs! I see your cute little faces but I am not fooled! Only heroes hide behind those sorts of masks.

At 9:53 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Who can say what the Raccoons are planning. I think it worth noting that Boss seems to be able to talk with them, fluently...

It was SO hard, I wanted to cuddle them and care for them and be their Mommy!!!!! But everything I have read says Bad Idea. Not pets. WIld. And like I need more of that in my life.....

You can get The Return of Pansy Smith and Violet Jones on Amazon???????

Who knew???????

I don't think I even have a copy....Would it be weird to buy my own cd?

At 9:58 AM , Blogger Unknown said...

Four albums! Three CDs, and one official bootleg cassette!

(I have them all! Muahaha!)

At 10:01 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I had forgotten about the bootleg cassette! I still have a bunch of them, it was the last Flash Girls show at the Cedar in Minneapolis, we called it Live Deadly Circuit!

At 10:03 AM , Blogger Kitty Cat said...

tracking number for cookies, please.

and you can CLEARLY use the photo skills of Kimbo, or me, or David. what was going on in the lighting of these photos? did the raccoons take these?
(wait, sorry Quiche, was that mean? HAHAHAHAHA)

At 10:24 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Very mean. I am not speaking to you anymore. Boss took those photos and he was as baffled as anyone as to why they turned out so strange. I think it is just Emma and I, the universe could not stand it...

At 10:37 AM , Blogger AletaMay said...

Will the mother come back to the baby raccoons? I know that they are very tricksy animals. Car camping near my home town requires that car doors be locked if you do not want to find raccoons camping inside the car in the morning.

At 10:37 AM , Blogger Phiala said...

The Amazon thing is very, very new, and is mp3 only. Will arranged that - I sort of think he'd send you the files if you asked. It seems sort of silly to buy your own album!

Hm... now how to scrounge a copy of the bootleg...

At 10:47 AM , Blogger Kitty Cat said...

sorry Boss and FabLo, but those officially ____
...well, you can fill in the blank....
oh YOU'LL speak to me!
yes you will.
or my name isn't BATGIRL.

At 10:53 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

We'll see about that, Batgirl!

I think the Mother did come back for them, she was just doing the prudent thing and running like hell away from the Dog. They aren't around at any rate...

Wow, it is there. And it says Maurice and I is selling for 18.72 plus shipping. Heck, I'll sell it to you for less than THAT!

I don't have covers for the cassettes anymore, but if you want one, send me your address, the quality is not great tho....

At 10:59 AM , Blogger Dan Guy said...

I figured it was just your aura manifesting on the film. Quiche of Mystery, lurking in the shadows!

At 11:14 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

It was the Aura of Quiche of Mystery, Batgirl doesn't know squat about taking pictures.

(Take that Batgirl! Diss-er of our Boss's photos!)

At 11:54 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Either that or Emma is radioactive...

At 12:01 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

And I can't download the files from Amazon, because it is restricted to US market...
Bugger.
Bugger.
Bugger.
(Have I mentioned: bugger?)

At 12:14 PM , Blogger Kitty Cat said...

Nothing anyone says is going to make me take it back.
sorry, they truly blow.
just terrible. Boss, you know i love you but really...
it hurts my feeling even to LOOK at photos of that quality.
were they taken on a drownded disposible camera?
HAHAHAHAHA

ok, will there really be frosting on the bat cookies?
if so, we need to be speaking. yes...frosting...please...

At 12:39 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

There will be frosting but not for YOU Diss-er of pictures!!!!!!!!!! PURPLE frosting!!!!!

Nathilie, I think we can get you a copy, not to worry, we shall not leave our European friends stranded alone with no Flash Girls!!!!!!!!!

At 12:45 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

You are such a sweetheart, amazing and fabulous in every way.

At 12:49 PM , Blogger AletaMay said...

I think maybe some of those frosted cookies should go to some of the adoring fans who come out to see you play this weekend. Yup.

We do not criticize your Boss's mad photo skilz -- no we don't! And we like purple frosting sometimes -- yes we do!

At 12:50 PM , Blogger Kitty Cat said...

says she smally:

bunch of sycopants!
i make my own frosting then.
hmmmph

At 12:52 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Sycopants?
That's a nice one.
:)

Where are the days when one would go around with a good ol' lightmeter?

At 1:00 PM , Blogger AletaMay said...

sycopants

Sounds like something I should be able to buy on your Neverwear site!

Actually on one of my computers those photos don't look half bad -- interesting and mysterious actually. There is an interesting sort of darkness and light thing going on. On this computer I am on right now though the dark even darker and I have not decided what I think of that yet. It is still mysterious though.

At 1:13 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Aleta, I think I could make some extra cookies and bring them to the gig, we play both Friday and Saturday, which night are you coming???

MAYBE you can have some frosting Kitty. Maybe. I mean, I am sending the darn things to your place as Malena is crazed, you could eat the whole darn tin and tell her they never arrived.

I am telling Boss you dissed his shots tho. I think he will fire you. So sad.

At 1:18 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

So you are volunteering to do Kitty's work as well?
How brave of you...

At 1:20 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

In all fairness, the middle picture turned out okay. Besides, one decent photo out of three shots isn't all that bad. ;) Granted, I haven't gotten around to posting any pictures anywhere.

I've also heard of shipping breakable stuff in popped popcorn. Admittedly, marshmallows are a very good idea, too. :)

Is there ever enough time to talk with old friends who live far away? I try to call some of mine at least every month, sometimes more often. I'm glad you had at least some time with Emma. :)

None of my cats have ever scooted their butts on the carpet, or dumped over their litter box. They have pulled towels and such into the litter box instead of covering with litter, but maybe that's just my current, male, cat. When he's unhappy with the state of said box, he finds things to eat so he'll vomit. Like the toilet paper next to the bed that my husband uses to blow his nose, or the tissues out of the box on my side of the bed if I haven't pushed them under the nightstand overhang far enough. And, of course, this happens at 3 AM. On the other hand, none of mine have ever pissed on the bed, especially while I was still in it.

At 1:23 PM , Blogger Kitty Cat said...

you know, somehow i think those cookies might ...

my tombstone will read,

::snort::

At 1:37 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

They Do Not Suck! They are just weird. Like me. And Emma.

Boss says you are not fired. He says he will send you the photos so you can see the weirdness for yourself, and do things to them. Then I will post them again, and everyone will see how brilliant you are.

Cool???

Frosting for everyone!!!!!!!!

Cats are weird too.

At 1:43 PM , Blogger AletaMay said...

Yay! We get wonderful music AND cookies! It looks like Saturday will be the big group (I think there will be 6-8 of us) but it is possible 3 or 4 of "the regulars" (if we can be called that after only being around for the past couple of months!) may try to make it Friday night as well.

Kitty I am glad you are not fired!

At 1:43 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

While I'm all about taking photos where you can see people's inner selves come out, like these I took of a friend playing drums a couple of weeks ago -- those of you seem to have some shadow lurking over them. I'm with Kitty on those photos -- Boss did not exactly cover himself in glory, there. (Though I suppose the same could be said of my quick BookExpo sketches of Boss, which, in my defense, I had to do in the dark, before coffee.)

We'll have to wait and see about the Raccoon Sirs. Maybe we can ally with them, to steal some bat cookies and send them to me, since I won't be at either of your gigs or Malena's show, as I will be stuck painting in the studio from 10 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.. (Which is sort of like B'rer Rabbit complaining about being stuck in the briar patch, really.) Still, being what seems like the only blog-commenting person here who still hasn't met Lorraine or Malena; not seen the Spooky House; not seen a gig…only briefly met Kitty… I'm beginning to feel left out.

I'll just have to go virtually plot with Cabal. Hrmpf.

At 1:44 PM , Blogger EmilyLady said...

How wonderful that you got to see each other.

I doubt I'll ever tire of the Bengal stories; I think I'll be sad when they leave you!

But goodness, I do wonder how you put up with such madness ....

~Emily

At 1:56 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Emily, only 2 of the Bengals are leaving for a new home (as soon as I find them a new home..) Venus and Mim aren't going anywhere, ever!!!!!

Pantagruel, you can't possibly be the ONLY one out there who hasn't met us!

Can you?

Who else haven't we met? Anyone?

At 2:06 PM , Blogger EmilyLady said...

I haven't met you, Lorraine!

(You have MORE THAN TWO BENGALS?! How did I miss that?)

~Emily

At 2:07 PM , Blogger Kitty Cat said...

see Panta, those photos are cool.
look like lightning strikes...struck...stricken....

me glad not fired too.
*phew*

send those photos over, i will CSI them.
or maybe destroy them forever...mhhhuuuuhhhuuu
(this is the noise that Malena would make, if she weren't off red-carpeting somewhere)

At 2:27 PM , Blogger scored4life said...

Sign me up for a full dose of bat cookies! Does anyone know what kind of drink goes best with bat cookies? I had some fresh peaches with Jameson the other day and those combine heavenly!

I am looking forward to playing at the new place! Should be a blast.

P.S. Way to stand your ground Kitty. So strong, so aggressive... gotta go!

At 2:31 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Don't kid around Kitty, it's only 2:30 in the afternoon, the little Vampire is still sleeping, having been up all night LAST night red carpeting it around...

I think one could drink Jameson with Bat Cookies. Pantagruel, our designated drinker must research this.

I have 2 Bengals of my own, and 2 foster rescue Benglas. My rescues are looking for a home, together with just exactly the right person.

At 2:35 PM , Blogger EmilyLady said...

(backs away) I hope that the words "just the right person" weren't meant as a hint ...

~Emily

At 2:41 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I am subtly hinting at EVERYONE. Maybe you can't take two Bengals, but maybe someone knows someone who knows someone.....

These would be wonderful friends for the right person.

At 2:48 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Why, thank you, Kitty! I'm glad someone else appreciates the difference between photos that were intended to look funky and craptacular shots that ended up funky. ;)

I've not yet found a food that couldn't be paired with the right single-malt. Jameson… *rummages around in the liquor cabinet*… I have two bottles of Jameson. I suspect they'll go better with Bowmore Darkest, though. Now I just need Bat Cookies to test, and I'll be happy to report back!

As far as the Jungle Loves go… I thought you actually had a home for them. Hmm. I'll email you. ;)

At 3:05 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

Pantagruel, you aren't the only one who hasn't met Ms. Marvelous, Ms. Fabulous, or Ms. Kitty face to face. I live in Texas. Ms. Kitty is the only one of the three who has been in Texas since this blog began, three (?) years ago. Nor have I ever attended Balticon. I'm also relatively certain that there are folks who read the blog, own the CD, yet never comment who have yet to meet the Terrific Trio, or their Boss. ;)

At 4:06 PM , Blogger K said...

I haven't met anybody! waaah!

Well, OK, I have met the Boss by waiting in a signing line, and I've met Ravyn, who has met some of you. But that's it.

I'm probably also the one that lives furthest away from the Spooky House *sniff*

Your hair looks good, Lorraine!

At 4:07 PM , Blogger K said...

Oh, and I cannot adopt any Bengals, because not only is Scotland a long way away, I'm pretty sure Bengals would eat guinea pigs.

At 4:11 PM , Blogger Phiala said...

Oh, I've never met anybody either. I'm just some sort of Internet hanger-on, trying to be cool by association. :)

I do have all the Flash Girls albums, at least, if not the bootleg that I only learned of today. And I've read everything the Boss has written that I can get my hands on. Plus, I already knew that raccoons are not to be trusted.

Enjoy the music and bat-cookies, everyone! It sounds like nearly enough fun to inspire me to move to the upper midwest...

At 4:20 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Phiala, if you move here I will give you 2 guinea pig eating Bengals for a housewarming present.

We should have a party sometime and everyone should come! Perhaps a Con...Anyone out there?????

Thanks, K. I call this color RED.

At 4:46 PM , Blogger Phiala said...

I think the Bengals would beat up my wolfie and take his milk money!

At 4:57 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Okay, I do not feel nearly so left out now. We should totally have a party to meet up and fix this!

At 5:08 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

This is the midwest. Buy your Wolffie a Cow,

Yess...A Party of all of us!

At 5:12 PM , Blogger Phiala said...

Then they'd beat him up and take his cow! I think maybe we're better off with no Bengals in the house, pretty as they are. My wolfie lets housecats boss him around - Bengals would be all over the poor wimpy boy.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes to a party (I just moved to a new town and am a little bit . . . well, lonely, I guess is the proper word -- but it's a *cool* little town, and from my new back porch, I can see a certain interesting not-quite-a-mountain written about by Fablo's boss in one of his so wonderful books!!). But wouldn't I just love to see all of you? Oh yup I would. Sigh.

62nd Comment... woot!!! Gosh, I remember how excited I was to make a 40th comment... now we hit 60!!! and the post has barely been up for 24 hours! Well done LaMies!
