Bits of Things....

Morning, Fiends!

HA! I am awake early, long before the West Coast can be up, tho I am certain the East Coast is, and we are WELL along in the UK, tho it doesn't concern me much, as London seems to be somewhat shut down, due to snow. Might be Spring before they get dug out.

Still on my first cup of tea, so not sure how very interesting I will be, but as it may well be nighttime before I get back to you, we ought to have something up besides, "Ack, no fun gig!"

Only a few more days before this Movie is out into the world!!Not sure that means the work will be done, but it will certainly lighten up a bit, and I get a Boss back for a week, which both the Dog and I will like.

Speaking of Dog, he is doing very well, but thinks he is REALLY well and ought to be allowed to run and play as much as he likes, which isn't the case at all. He is up to 3-4 walks to the end of the drive and back every days. On leash. (Driveway is about a city block long, maybe a little less)

Benglas are not exactly liking these strange hours I have been keeping, but things are good, we're going to have some new pics of them soon, I think, they will feel better if they get some page time. They seem to think it's been a little too Doggish over here lately. Magic is still peeing on the futon, but not as much, hopefully he is getting used to the idea that he likes me soon.

Venus doesn't seem to like her food anymore. She never has much liked anything, and is a lean kitty, but I think she is getting too thin. (Something I worry about myself all the time, hee-hee) There is dry food out all the time, different kinds, and once a week tuna, which she does like, I split a can between the five of them, and cook chicken, or steak sometimes for them, but she just isn't into it. Commercial grocery store canned food she doesn't like, and it makes Mim really sick.

I need to explore some higher quality canned food Marilyn, The Cat Coach, says.

If I could make myself do it, I would put a little Pond in the kitchen and stock it and she could have Sushi....

Right. With that lovely thought, I am getting to work!

Love and awake,
Lorraine

Ok, now that I have read the post. ;-)

Wow, I realize how much I miss reading your updates on the Bengals and Dog and Boss. I hate being distracted away from the fun internet thingies.

Is it really snowing in London? I thought it only snowed in Boston. It's snowing here AGAIN! I'm so done with the snow.

Poor Dog. I wish I had half his energy. He's such a riot! I'm glad to hear that he's feeling better.

Do the kitties vomit from the tuna? My cat gets sick from most foods. He's got a very sensitive stomach. If you find other tuna products, I'd love to hear them.

Does anyone here read the magazine "Realms of Fantasy?" The publisher has pulled the plug after 14 years and there is a group of people who are trying to save it.

If you're interested in helping the cause, you can go here for more info.

Lorraine, I hope it's ok that I posted this here. Thanks!

You guys make me laugh so!

Tuna is not good for cats to have very often, one hears. And they can't get everything they need from just meat. Mim gets sick with a lot of things, but has been ok, lately, s long as I don't give her regular canned. Venus just doesn't like anything.

We need some more London reports! We need to know!

Just cold here. I need some warm!!! The Tattooed Tiger is coming out here next week, to be with us for a bit. Maybe I have this wrong and I should be going to LA to stay in the treehouse....I could bring the Bengals. All of them. And the dog.

At 7:56 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Course it's ok, Erin! We like Relms of Fantasy, and good causes!

At 8:01 AM , Blogger Erin Underwood said...

I'm so out of touch! Who is the Tattooed Tiger?

P.S. Seeing you, the Bengals, and Dog in a tree house would be priceless.

At 8:07 AM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Quiche, come to LA and visit! Bring the Bengals and Dog, I have room in the Art Cave, if Kitty's Treehouse is full…

Still love you all, but work has been ugly. Will probably have to cut a minion loose today. Bad part about being a Boss. Blah.

Hey, how come I don't get a ticky box?

At 8:30 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Haaa, being logged on does hel.
Silly me.
I hope you can get some down time next week, Lorraine and rest a bit.
You'll get more time with the wee beasties, so that's good.
How much longer has Cabal to go on restrain? It can't be long now before he is allowed to romp about again (hopefully NOT breaking another leg).

Snowing here again too. Fun! I have my hot bowl of clam chowder and my portable heater so I'm good.

Morning Q. Europe has been up for simply ages FWIW, and will be going home from work soon.

Maybe raw (but not actually swimming) fish would appeal? whitebait, or something like that, if you can get hold of it Or even raw meat, rather than the canned food?

Incidently, do you have a copt of 'The Unadulterated Cat' by Mr Pratchett? It has some wise words about feeding cats..

Nat - were you already logged in? You don't get ticky box if you're not, but if you hit preview then edit it befoe publishing your comment it appears.

Glad Dog is feeling better, although it sounds as though that makes it harder work for you having to keep him quiet.

Looking forwrd to more cat pics.

How was riding?

Emily - hope your medical whateveritis is not too much of a hassle.

Why, just call me the Link Fairy. Here is more information about UK Snowdoom 2009 than anyone could reasonably want! Rah the BBC.

And here is a YouTube clip of chickens vs. rabbits for those of you who cannot yet count yourself among its 3,114,231 viewers. Look at those chickens, laying down the law.

Link Fairy, Fairy of Links. Twinnnng! *flutters linkily*

Glad that Bengals and Poochy are mostly well! I wonder whether Venus is partly off her food because of the weird hours. Maybe when things go back more to the way she likes them, she'll eat more? Hard to say with a picky cat. I've got one who'll beg for treats, then look at you like you're nuts when you actually give them to her. It's like she's got some kind of Dream Treat in her head which nothing else compares to.

Emily: hope you feel better very soon! And don't crawl to California-- you'd be in your forties before you got there. Take a train. ;)

Val - bleah. Not a nice thing to look forward to. Hope the episode goes well.

Now to get something accomplished. Merry Tuesday, everyone!

Total A.D.D. day, must have left my concentration at home this morning. Just saw this for those in St Paul/Minn. :

The Red Balloon Bookshop, St. Paul, Minn., will host a book club for adults who love children's literature. The discussion group, sponsored by the bookstore and the Children's Literature Network, meets on the third Thursday of each month, beginning February 19.

Don't know 'bout London but we got snow in Dublin, though being this close to the sea it's not sticking. Looks pretty though.

I'm convinced that cats puke BECAUSE THEY CAN!! Mine seem to have a preference for vomiting just as I'm drifting off to sleep, regardless of what they've been eating.

Good to hear Cabal's out and about again, even if it's not as much as he'd like.

Val, good luck with releasing the minion, not fun.

Q, if you don't have The Unadulterated Cat, I've one I can send you, just let me know.

Cat story the first: My shower has a glass door. This morning, as soon as I turned off the water, Morgan pulled the door open so he could enter the wet and dripping stall and twine around my wet and dripping ankles. Ew. I spent the next few minutes trying to remove long black fluff from my shins, while Morgan sat in the shower, tail draped in a puddle of water, with that self-satisfied expression that only a contented cat can manage.

Cat story the second: Morgan is prone to hairballs, most often located somewhere you will not notice until you step there. On the bed in the night is another prime spot, since he usually sleeps on or next to me. The preparatory noises wake me enough to stimulate a finely developed reflex: push cat off bed. Stepping in a hairball is unpleasant, but vastly superior to having one soak through the blankets.

Sound asleep. Hacking noise. Push cat. Wide awake! Ungodly hissing and snarling. The dog had climbed off the bed in the middle of the night, and had been sleeping on the floor. Next to my side of the bed. Where he could be landed upon by an already-disgruntled cat. Oops.

I love the animal updates. I slept deep and well last night. Let's hope today doesn't knock all the stuffing out of me.

I'm glad Cabal is walking as much as he is. And healing. Dogs are my new favorites. Don't tell the cats, who were my dark overlords for years.

Emily, I hope all is well in your household. Father and medical issues are resolved.... in a good way.

And Val, I'm sorry you may have to release a minion back into the wild. I joke, but I know it's hard.

Now, back to the salt mines.

Whoa, Jess! You are the Link Fairy! Too much snow!

Dan, I'm now suffering from uncontrollable chowder cravings.

I feed Oliver special indoor cat food that costs and arm and a leg, but he still vomits. The only thing that has never upset his stomach.... canned Eukanuba dog food. Yes, he steals it from the dogs. Silly, cat~!

Yes, Kitty is the Tattooed Tiger. Boss called her the Tattooed Tornado, but but we (and more importantly she) likes Tiger better.

And she does have really lovely tattoos, and is the inspiration for me getting mine soon.

I don't have that book! Never even heard of it!

Awww, releasing minions no fun!

hmmm sorry, no good cat advice to give... mine is rather picky too but she likes her treats(Temptations.. yeah, I know they aren't terribly good for cats) and she at least eats her Fancy Feast cans and crunchies... I just CANNOT get her to eat most types of other things, like chicken, salmon, turkey, beef. She will ONLY take bits when I hand-feed them to her like they are treats... like she eats them for MY enjoyment.

She does like to attack rabid bread loafs, rip through their flimsy plastic skins and taste-test them for us humans... and she started taking Goldfish crackers from me a few days ago.

Sorry to hear about missing riding on Sunday.

Val, good luck girl. I am sure that is NOT fun.

At 10:21 AM , Blogger Marjorie said...

Sorry you missed riding, Q. And about minion loss, Val. I missed that part of your comment first time around. I agree - quite the worst part of being a boss, especially if the reason is financial cuts (rather than minion misbehaviour)

Jess has beaten me to it and given you all the linky information you could want about our snowdoom (I'm so stealing that!)

Most of what we had here melted this afternoon, but it's snowing again now.

At 10:29 AM , Blogger Marjorie said...

The bit from 'Unadulterated Cat' I was thinking of was in relation to feeding cats, and the pattern that it follows:

1. Real cat turns nose up at gold plated tinned stuff recommneded by woman on television.
2.Out of spite, you buy some down-market own-brand stuff whose contents you wouldn't want to know about [...]cat wolfs it down,
3.out of relief, next shopping trip you buy a dozen tins of the humming stuff.
4.Cat turns up it's nose at it after one meal. This is a cat, you understand, that will eat dragonflies and frogs.

Having for some time watched what cats will eat, I can safely say that any enterprising manufacturer who markets acat food made of steak, half-thawed turkey, grass, flies, crumbs from under tables, frogs and voles will be on to a winner. At least for one meal."

(Mr Pratchett's wprds, not mine)

It's a great book.

good morning all from sunny and 60* LA---
tattoo'd or no, Quiche, i am still dreaming that you have a koi pond in SPooky House and that Venus chooses her victim every mealtime....
what a wonderful image, all except for the poor fishies.
I have to still show you the gold flaked lobster sushi video that i took the night Boss and I had the amazingist sushi meal ever by the beach.

Anyway, about the cat food issue, your Kylie eats everything placed in front of her happy little face, including climbig the bookcases for a bite of salad (my poor plants).
Batman on the other hand, that conflicted Dark Knight, is very fussy and does puke up food regularly. I have spent a small fortune running him to the vet, and they say, yeah, some cats are just nervous nelly-esque in the tummy. WHich to me is a bit of a cover-all. He loves his baked chicken,
and does eat what he can before Selina Kyle bounds over to help him finish.
just beam them full of love and let them tell you what they do want, they are magical little hearth tigers, and we humans are simply there to serve.
Q, i am nearing my call-you time! pick up!
ps SPACEDLAW, loving your twitter haiku, i am just still learning the twit-rules.

Feeling better. It was just this thing. But I had intended to say that I was happy Cabal was feeling better even if it meant he was pushing himself a little harder than he should be, and also that I'm glad he is a joyful dog -- rather than a nervous and/or exhausted one.

Also, William is very, very excited for Coraline. He can hardly wait. He requested that I write "Coraline" on the calendar.

I love the idea of a live fish buffet pond for your cats - even if it does make me feel like a traitor to my fishy astrological sign.

Val - sorry about the minionectomy. Apparently not even the coasts are immune to the stupid economy thing?

Kitty - 60 sounds wonderful, especially when it's something like 2 here.

I'm glad Cabal is getting back to normal (dogs have always been my fave). My hellions are still under house arrest until the snow melts. We got another 4 inches today.

At 11:01 AM , Blogger Marjorie said...

Boss's adventures with Cabal & pill reminded me of the book too - there's a bit about giving pills to cats, which I think probably applies to Cabal too.

I this morning finally started reading Coraline. I rather don't want to put it down, but food must be eaten, children looked after, etc. I am, however, not working for a day. I am grateful to be able to do this.

LOL at the snow dalek. My kids want to build a snow elephant. Um.

Weather here is... deceptively sunny. I go outside expecting something akin to warmth, but nooooo.

Virtues to wash. Dust rhinos to round up. Off I go for a bit.

wOOt! cOOl sHOes!!

Okay, sorry, got a little silly there. In the spirit of things, 'n all...

Val--my sympathies, to both you and said minion.

Now, on the subject of kitty eating and not eating....esp the losing weight part...I feel I have become a subject matter expert here.

Angus only wanted to eat tuna, chicken and the like--which he would promptly throw up, as being allergic.

He had a pretty desperate week in between my deployments, where we honestly wondered if we would lose him. I won't go into details, but he wound up drugged and on an IV for days at the vet's.

Anyway--vet prescribed this special IVF Limited ingredient cat food. He has gradually decided he won't eat the Duck or the Lamb, but still eats Venison. You can also buy a limited ingredient cat food made by Dick Van Patten's cat food company at the bigger pet supply stores (Petsmart and the like)

But when we moved here, he stopped even eating that much.....and every other specialty cat food I tried seemed to have something in it he either wouldn't eat, or would make him toss it up again. In mass quantity.

But (another vet recommendation) we found a high quality meat store (Keller's, natural no hormone and no antibiotics) which sells, next to the sausages, frozen bags of chopped meat for pet food. I get bags of beef and turkey, mixed (as he has never had bad reactions to those) and cut them up into patties for defrosting as needed.

He LOVES his tablespoon or two of raw chopped meat twice a day! And not only has he put weight back on, but it seems to have restored his appetite for his canned food.

So those are my recommendations:
IVF or the like limited ingredient canned food (unfortunately, kinda expensive)
and/or high-quality chopped beef pet food from a good meat market.

Go Bengals!

A snow dalek is a fine fine thing.:)

Too bad Venus is being such a picky diva about her food. Good to hear that Cabal is back to bouncy, just hope he doesn't hurt himself in an excess of doggy enthusiasm.

Val I hope the minion-ectomy goes smoothly. Definitely the most not fun thing about being a boss. Maybe some liquid refreshment is called for at the end of the day?;)

Brrr. I was really hoping when they said "chance of snow" that it would be the kind that wouldn't stick instead of 6". My apartment is COLD. Time to go hide under the blankets with a book and the cat.

My Neri will eat this dry stuff made in France that the vet sells. She also like small fresh Baltic herring as long as I clean out the guts first.

All I can say is that Marilyn, The Cat Coach suggested Dick Van Patten's Nature's Choice & I switched my girls to it and we've had no hairballs; no food rejection & they aren't at the bowls every 3 hours thinking they are starving. They have the kibble too but it's much smaller amounts and is always gone when din-din comes. What's more is the cans are tiny (Fancy Feast size) and I split two cans for 4 cats. Unless they are going to the neighbors and mooching (highly doubtful, each neighbor has small dogs) they are getting the protien they need & not overeating all that corn. I'm sold.

And yes; Ms. Q, a Southern California trip must certainly be on your agenda; all your cat relatives are here waiting with open arms; homes & food bowls.

LOL at Lo's comment. White cake, yep, especially with chocolate frosting.

Did all y'all know there's a Coraline Wii game? I just saw it in a store. Seems so... odd. Dunno why.

BPAL Spicy Brains! Very cool.

Q, I have a great deal of respect for you, but on this one matter you are seriously mistaken.

Chocolate cake. Made with extremely good dark chocolate. Dusted with powdered sugar if decoration is desired. Possibly served with vanilla ice cream from the dairy down the road.

Angel cake is great except with chocolate sauce that tastes like antibiotic. (My grandmother is normally a very GOOD baker, but there was that ONE time with the chocolate sauce).

You know I what I love more than anything? Cottage cheese.

Time for me to let Jack on. I've had my computer time ...

MMM chocolate cake...flourless, since I've given up wheat. But I wouldn't want chocolate scent in my Spicy brain...I would be hungry the whole time I was wearing it.

The Dalek was brilliant. As was Jess!

Shoes and brains and bengals, oh my.

Lorraine, I am sending you my extra energy. I think you could put it to better use this week.

And chocolate is the best, I agree Phiala. Although white cake does seem appropriate for Spicy Brains.

Try putting a little warm water in Venus's dry food, make sure she sees you do it...I did that once when Digby seemed to be living in Finicky City for ~way~ too long. It did the trick. Cats will go through those weird periods from time to time, but keep a close eye on her. Watch her bathroom habits, if possible, and if you see anything odd, or she does get too thin (or swells in the belly), bring her to the vet.

I once lost one of my Abyssinians to Feline Infectious Peritonitis. The breeder, it turned-out, knew that the whole litter she'd bred had inherited it, genetically, and she skipped town after leaving the rest of the dying litter with a local vet (and *after* selling Trixie to me, of course). That poor little cat died a horrible death. My 14 year-old Abby, Digby, was luckily not infected by sad, doomed Trixie. That would've killed me.

Yeah, don't worry. Just keep an eye on the little devil.

Wow...telling morbid cat-stories. Sorry. Don't know where that came from. I guess I'll never forget how hard it was to see that cat go down, and wouldn't want anyone else to go through it.Ever.

Anyhow: Great to hear the doings and...Coraline Friday!

OK, CNN story:
Surgeons removed a healthy kidney through a donor's vagina, the Johns Hopkins Medical Center has announced. ...... "She said it was like getting a tooth removed," the donor's doctor said.

Now, i've heard the term vagina dentata but...what?!? LOL

The Manwife would like to protest that beer is how we know Fod loves us and wants us to be happy. Though I imagine that Beer Essence would not work well in a scent.

Theobroma is Fod's holy progeny.

There is very seldom such a thing as too much chocolate. White chocolate is not chocolate.

Ms. Fabulous, you are highly loved and respected; however, in this you are mistaken, or at least alone. Besides, I remember telling you how to make chocolate candy many moons ago.

It is all relative, Chantrelle, we all work amazingly hard, and it is hectic all over.

Jake Ian, we take the happy and the sad on pet stories here. I am sorry yo had to go thru it, but at least she had YOU and wasn't left alone, yes? And many thanks for the advice! Venus SEEMS fine, just lean.

Took LOTS of pics, off to sort thru and do a new post! Two today! Keep up with me!!!!!!!!!!!

oooo, new shiny shoes, can't wait to see 'em! there is nothing like cool new shoes to brighten a day! hope the kitty feeding goes better - i too like the idea of a koi pond in the kitchen.

Jess, beer essence would be yeast with maybe malt and hops, though I've met lots of people allergic to hops.

Chantrelle...I'll just sit here and hum the tune to a song from a popular Disney movie/musical about lions. ;)

Jake Ian, I lost two cats to FIP, each before a vaccine was developed though years apart. It is a horrible thing for a cat to go through.

On second thought, no.

Yay spicy brains scent!

Forget cake, I just go for bittersweet chocolate. I do like angel food cake alright, though. And New York-style cheesecake. Yum.

Our very own BPAL scent? You have been working hard Quiche. I can't wait to smell it.

Chantrelle: OMG. *shudder* Y'know, it may feel "like getting a tooth removed" but I don't want ANYTHING removed via that path. Eek.

scents of vanilla make me sad :(

i can't wear my stardust bpal because it smells like a dryer sheet. which isn't of itself a bad thing, it's a nice clean scent, but apparently my head thinks otherwise. searing instant migraines occur when i open the bottle.

i can eat things made with real vanilla extract, but the fake stuff i can smell across the room and dislike.

white cake is ok, but totally need the chocolat iceing. we always eat out cake refridgerated, i like the way the texture of the cake is cool. room temp cake is too squidy to me. TEXTURE!
but the best flavor of cake is yellow with lemon icing. totally tops.

Speaking of cats, which we weren't: O, terrible! I just had to shut both my cats away for the night without dinner. Edie goes under to have a tooth yanked tomorrow, and can't have any food tonight-- which means none for either, as they eat together. Oh, my Fod. It was awful. I'm going to have visions of something like this in my head all night. And Deep Guilt. :(

Thank goodness that cats have relatively poor short-term memories. They won't write tell-all autobiographies later.

Still doing post, had to put out some movie fires. We never sleep here. But I won this round, fingers crossed.

Jess, that was a hoot! Obviously, those people didn't know they had cats, and the cats needed to tell them exactly what to do.

Taxes are finally done and efiled. Let the spending planning begin....mortgage, food, gas, power, water. Boy, I live large.

Where's our 2nd post of the day, Q? Slacker.....

At 7:06 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Slacker, HA! It's up...See if you are first Siri, then we will see who is a slacker!

Spiucy Brains scent! WooT (although can't normally wear scents - bring me up in a nasty pink itch, they do)

And for eating, Chocolate cake, the darker the better.

Or Lemon drizzle cake.

Or maybe poppyseed cake. that one's nice.

White Cake? Is that just plain sponge with no flavouring?
