Perfect Storms....

Tonight was one of those nights that doesn't come around often. Some gigs are great, and fun, and some gigs are a whole lot of work. And some are such a joy and delight that life doesn't get any better.

Tonight could not have been better. It was a Perfect Storm of really wonderful people coming to hear us, and having the kind of time one is meant to in an Irish Pub. The place went SRO early, and stayed that way, and was filled with a lot of people who have come to hear us before, and made our night, but never have they all been there together.

They made me SO happy. I can't claim credit, tho if I do say so myself, we did rock, but it was the people who MADE the rock, if you see what I mean. We got it from them and tossed it on back. I'm not sure I have ever felt so loved before..The kind of night where you leave thinking ..."THAT is why I do this."

Aleta and Laser Lady were there too, which always makes me happy. The only sore spot in the night was I had a fierce headache for no good reason, but Laser Lady, apparently, has special powers and was able to fix it. I must learn this skill.

(I know this is mean, but it's really funny..) It is always lovely to have Aleta and Laser Lady in for a show, but guys, you will be way more popular with the pub if you REMEMBER TO PAY YOUR BAR TAB before leaving.....(call them tomorrow, I assured them it was the Tequila and not intentional...)

Cabal comes home tomorrow, and I think he is getting better. The U of M vets could not have been nicer. They called me every few hours today to let me know how he was doing, and have been keeping them with them, in conference rooms and such, rather than leaving him alone. It was pretty scary, and not at all fun for a while there...Seems to be a case of him eating something Bad, that laid him low, and not something wrong...

It's funny how I have never thought much about the saying "Every good dead will come back to haunt you.." I mean, there I was a few weeks ago, befriending a Carrot, for goodness sake, it was alone and misunderstood, I wanted to help it achieve everything it wanted, and fulfill its hopes and dreams....And I did. And I thought that was the end of it. It was a one off thing, and made me feel like I could make a difference.

I did. And hadn't thought much about it since. Until I went for a snack tonight.

Oh Fods....

Love and Magic Evenings,
Lorraine

Happy birthday, Kali-licious! Hope you have an awesome day, dude. :)

Every time I hear about your gigs, I want to go see you play, but this one really makes me sad I was not there to join in the fun.

Speaking of fun, Aleta -- Skipping out on a bar tab?! Dude. DUDE! How did you make it out the door without being scruffed, shaken down, or shot? Were the bouncers asleep? Were they hypnotized by the pipes? The mind reels.

At 5:20 AM , Blogger Phiala said...

Oh Fods! The carrots are multiplying! Invasion! Invasion! Sound the alarm!

I'm glad the gig was so fantastic - wish I could have gone!

And even gladder that poor Cabal is better. Sick puppies are very sad. Happily ours is fairly healthy (though remarkably prone to injuring himself).

Happy Birthday Kali-ilicious! Have a great day.

Q - gald to hear Cabal is feeling better, and that you had such a great gig. I'm feeling so frustratedt hat I'm on the wrong continent to be able to come and hear you play!

And, yes, yes, we need Carrot Cuthulu cuddly Things (possibly wearing their own tiny Fiends T-shirts...)

At 6:45 AM , Blogger Stardustgirl said...

That IS a good time if you made someone totally forget their bar tab :-D Glad you had a great night.

The Cthulu Carrots + Poppets would seem to be a photo op waiting to happen. Surely there's a Poppet lurking around there somewhere...

I'm happy Cabal is doing better. I'm always amazed (and often freaked out) by what my dogs will just eat without a second thought. Two of them have taken several years off my life by eating Things That Should Remain Uneaten.

It was a great gig, still hsppy sbout it, tho sleepy. Th evet just gave me my wake up call, and I am off to get him.

Yes, there are more. More than we ever knew. There they are,on the goat cheese couch....With their chldren around them...

I so need tea..

Val, here in the midwest we are gentler about such things, the bar merely remarked to me after they had left, that it seemed they had not paid the tab, and were fine when I vouched for them and assured them it was error and not malice...

Gotta love the midwest...They don't call it Minnesota nice for nothing...

Right, off toget the dog, poor guy..The vet said he has not yet eaten....

The pubs in Minnesota are definitely somthing, that is for sure. Sounds like one wonkin' grand show, and we all wish we were there.

Marjorie;
Misread your post, and first got that we should all get CthulCarroty t-shirts. But then got it that you wanted the lil darlings to be warm enough. Or at least dressed. Heaven knows, they are even more startling in their nudity. :)

I may not start with Freebird, I need to know when to shut up some nights....

Huuu... Read your boss' blog?
It's a good read, honest. And Dan did such a marvelous job with it when boss was away in China, fomenting robot panda coup and trying weird experiments such like allowing comments! (That went dead even before I got to the blog, needless to say.) Or trying to get weird animals named after Boss...

Freeeeeeeeeeeebiiiiiiiirrrrrrd.

Evening, all. You'll be pleased to hear that Cats and Toddler all survived the weekend unscathed. Edie actually let Toddler pet her a bit, when Toddler wasn't chasing her round and round the downstairs shrieking, "Come back, kitty! Come back!" :)

Hee hee! A veritable legion of Cthulhots. You did say you could sense something growing out there...

Poor Cabal-- I hope he's a bit better. I think I missed the bit where he went off to the vet. Did he eat his hamburger rice?

Hamburger rice makes me think that stuffed peppers would be a good idea for dinner. I'm too tired to cook, though. I'm liking the thought of pizza.

Hope you all are having a good weekend, too!

At 2:57 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

This job of your is interfering too much with my French lessons...I am sorry, but I think you need to do something about getting into a line of work where you have time for priority things...I'm not going to stand for this canceling much longer.

Laser Lady it is always wonderful fun when you come, and I SO have to learn how you did that head ache removal!

Jess, congrads on surviving! You didn't miss Cabal going off to the vet, I didn't mention it, as I thought why worry everyone until I know what's going on.

He didn't eat his nice hamburger rice, alas. Am boiling chicken....

Hope Cabal is eating soon. What is it with dogs that eat weird gross things? You'd think they'd know where the GOOD stuff comes from, but it doesn't seem that way.

Hope you're feeling better Phiala,:)

I am ready for more than a one word comment now!

Happy Birthday Kali-licious! Many happy returns!

Lorraine I am so so so glad that you mentioned the fact that we did not pay. I honestly don't know if I ever would have figured it out. I think we were so transported by the music and the spirit of the night (perhaps also that one particular spirit known as tequila) that we just did not have room in our minds for such mundane details as bill paying! As Laser Lady says we had discussed how we really needed to leave a good tip. So funny.

Mother of Godchild was on a separate bill and she had paid her tab. So that was good. (How cool was MoG and LL doing the polka -- a thing of beauty!)

It really was a fabulous night. It glowed.

So... I drove out to the pub around noon and paid up. They were shocked. "You came back to pay! No one ever comes back to pay!" It was nice to give them a pleasant surprise!

I love the Cthulu/Mandrake Carrots -- I love that hey have set up a household in your fridge. They need wee martini glasses I think.

And Cabal. I am glad that he seems to be okay. Maybe he does not want to eat today because he is just not yet feeling hungry after all the throwing up. I was thinking yesterday how funny it is that I feel such real affection for a dog I have never actually met.

I spent the afternoon helping kids make kites at a six-year-old's birthday party. It was great if a bit overwhelming.

After I drove out to the pub I stopped at Barnes and Noble to get a card and gift card for the birthday boy. While there I saw a book I just had to buy. It made me think of the Fiends. It is called Zombie Haiku. I leave you with a couple of these gems:

Biting into heads
is much harder than it looks.
His skull is feisty.

Teeth can bite through bones.
The hair is hard to swallow.
Brains squish easily.

At 5:02 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Zombie Haiku??????? People are gettign Zombie Haiku PUBLISHED????? See, all you need is an idea...And then go for it.

(Wish I'd thought of it...)

At 5:28 PM , Blogger Jess said...

Zombie haiku! Oh, man-- we need to jump on that gravy train. Or one up them with some pseudo-Lovecraftian Carrothulu verse:

In the veggie patch,
Carrothulu waits dreaming.
Yeah, R'lyeh. He does.

Aww. Poor pupster! I hope he gets hungry soon. :(

Actually I'm working on a super secret poppet-type project for Lisa this weekend. Can't tell you yet as she arrives for VCON on Wednesday ... so it must remain a surprise until the con.

I want a 'Mr. Carrot Thing'. That sounds like a GREAT idea to me... there could be random holes all over it for extra limbs... it would be great! And they could come with mini-Carrothulu-sized Fablo Shirts!!!

Have a nice time Nat.

I'm tired, too-- having people over is always a major event around here. I'm told that there are people who do this sort of thing every week and don't get exhausted; I guess I must be kind of a lightweight. :D

Carrothulu-Poppet-Con! We should organise it. I envision something between Comic-con and a big farmer market: Anime! Vegetables! Anime Vegetables! Late night screenings of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! Live Melon sculpting! It'd be brilliant.

Right: go to bed, Jess. You've gone over the edge.

Glad Cabal is home, and that he does not have a turned stomach! Hope he has eaten something by now.

YAY! for rocking the pub! How did the day gig go today (Sunday)? Hope it went at least half as well. :)

Happy Birthday, Kali-licious! May you have many more!

Survived Eldest Daughter's birthday party. Only two classmates showed up, one of which had R.S.V.P.ed, but she said she had fun, and she also said that the two boys that showed up were probably her best friends so it's all good. Plus, I thought we were going to have to pay for a minimum of 9 kids, but we only had to pay for 4: our two girls and the two classmates.

About the Cthulots...remember that Martian Chronicles short story I was talking about several months ago? The food that the human immigrants to Mars planted that ended up changing them to Martians was carrots. Really. It didn't happen overnight; took several months.

At 9:56 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Minnesota nice, indeed. Dude.

Has the guilty member of the Pride fessed up yet? Has Cabal eaten anything?

Phiala, sorry you've succumbed to the plague.

And as for which side is spawning the candrakes/cthulots... Well, why else do you think Cabal is sick? He was bravely testing their effects!

Today, I went to the Getty and saw the Bernini exhibit. It was sublime. Absolutely breathtaking to see them in person -- photos don't do them justice at all. Got chided by docents for looking too closely at a Van Dyck, but how else are you supposed to see the glazing technique? I mean, really. Barely tore myself away, and could've happily stayed all day.

I was at the dentist w/ my son. He had to get a couple of cavities filled :(
Novacaine is finally starting to wear off so he can smile w/ both sides of his mouth now and not look like Popeye!

ugh so busy, too busy, barely can keep my head above water, won't let up anytime soon either. miss you all, hope everyone is doing well!

Boo to cavities! Poor guy. But it's good that they're fixed, and hopefully there wasn't much pain involved.

Hope everyone's had a good, or at least interesting, day today! I've just been laying low, m'self. Not much to tell. Paid some bills, did some reading, agreed to read A Poem for an art show my local library's putting on next week (just the one). Listened to the first chapter of The Graveyard Book! Which was mighty fine. :)

Busy, yes, spent the day at KTEA-2 achievement test training, tomorrow it's a full day of Woodcock-Johnson achievement test training, groan, and then two hours of tutoring a couple of spec ed kids at school and then later tomorrow night, I start my new part-time job as a tutor in the athletic dept at the local state university. Twenty years ago, the idea of one-one-one teaching of football players would have made my heart go pitty-pat. Now, I'm old and just happy to get my $15 bucks per hour. :-) And I'm avoiding my homework. Instead, I'm watching "House" with my 12-year-old, who has just recently discovered this show. He likes the mystery and it doesn't scare him (he doesn't enjoy police dramas, like the Law and Order ones that I love). Hope you all are well!!

Very quiet indeed! Just because I am not feeling well, darn plauge, doesn't mean YOU get to not be here....

Fighting off a cold, just sleeping and taking care of Cabal, who is eating again.....

I don't have time to read comments as Henry V is still not read and I have to find some things in the boxes before I go to bed but I am having Fiend withdrawal and wanted to say hello. You all are in my thoughts, and I wish you were here to help me move. :)

I am sitting on my son's pink bean bag chair with a cat under my chin but at least I have internet! No desk or chair but that can wait.

Let's hope I have time to catch up on the important reading tomorrow. I mean, of course, you Fabulous' Fiends. Night and morning.

At 8:57 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

YAY! Cabal is eating. :)

BOO! Ms. Fabulous is ill. :(

Last night, I got all dressed up to give a free belly dance demo/Q&A at the dance studio, and no one came. Same thing this morning, except I didn't bother to dress...in anything other than street clothes. (Had you worried there for a second, didn't I?) I did kinda freak out one of the 10-12 year old girls in the ballet/tap/jazz class before mine. I can't imagine how much worse it might have been if I hadn't been wearing my cloak. I did look good, though.

So sorry the bug caught up with you Lorraine... I recommend ginger, honey, and lemon in hot water (can you tell I'm a mother?)

Stupid plague. Sorry it caught up with ya, Lorraine. Lots of tea should be good.:) Tea and kitties, because they make such nice heat pads when they happen to hold still.;)

Speaking of which, I think the red tea is calling me from the kitchen.

Ariandalen, no one showed? Are they nuts? Don't they know how FUN bellydancing is? Sheesh.

Pantagruel - your comment made me snort my tes - I think getting hammered must mean something slightly diffenernt in American than it dose in English (or else your job is more unusual than most!)

Q - sorry to hear you have succumbed to the lurgy - hope you feel better soon.

I've been doing nothing of interest - think the last of the plague caught up with me at the weekend - didn't wake up until after 2 p.m, so all the hosuework will have to wait another week.

On the other hand, now less than 2 weeks to Hamlet (Yay :-))

It looks fantastic.

Dragonsally,

Yes, booked tickets a year ago and can't quite believe that it's actually nearly here, now! Plus, going with my 2 best girlie friends, both of whom live far enough away that I don't get to see them oftenm so it's a double bonus!

Add in that I'm going to Boss's Manchester reading/signing at the end of this month and October is lookign good!

At 1:45 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Sounds like an outstanding month of October!

At 1:57 AM , Blogger Dragonsally said...

What a great month.
At least I got to Boss's reading and signing when he was here.

I'm just re-watching Taking Over The Asylum, I'd forgotten how brilliant David Tennant was in it. Fods, its a good show.

At 2:54 AM , Blogger Marjorie said...

Did you get to see him in 'Recovery'? it was on the BBC here last February - very good indeed (David Tennant, I mean, Boss wan't in it as far as I know!)

I think I'm going to have to re-watch all my Dr Who DVD's to make sure I'm properly Tennanted up...

Carrots marrying cousin carrots?
Now I am going to have nightmare imagining sex between carrots (nightmare being: trying to figure it out...)

Now I am officially sick in Paris (or anywhere else I could care to be, germs aren't getting territorial and although most of them were collected in Le Touquet last week, I can't hear any of them swearing in French. Yet. With a little more fever, it might happen) and stressed (got medicine for that, though).
I return home tonight loaded with comics and pains au chocolat for my love and germs (plus comics) for me.
Tomorrow looks more and more like a stick-to-BED day. I might not remain conscious enough to read the comics though...

I too have been insanely busy trying to make sure I have a job at the end of the year. I think it's just what generally happens as fall approaches. Suddenly our to-do list looms large and the end of the year seems too close.

I'm glad you are all doing well, overall! ;)

Physics! Here's a physics poem for you, Fiends. It has very little to do with bananas, though.

————
Chance

If physics is to be believed, black holes aren't so black,
dimensions spawn from looks not given —
and Occam's razor badly needs sharpening.
It no longer suffices to split the endless
epistemological hairs entangling me.

Myriad things said and left unsaid
unfold alternate selves, all arcing toward
the person I can never be.

In another dimension, I'm
not blowing past every nebulous opportunity,
not recklessly wayward nor icy-tailed,
not incinerated when I try to meet another body.
Other selves split and shatter off
at the nadir of each encounter.
One of us ought to be successful at least.

It's comforting to consider
another atomic self who is enough,
who is searching every possible trajectory
to reach my destination;
but I never can recapture their journey.

At 9:07 AM , Blogger Jess said...

That is a very fine poem. :)

At 9:09 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Oh dear Fod, Jess -- I can never unsee that!

But thanks, all for the compliments on the poem. ;)

How have all the Fiends fallen prey to the plague? Blogger must be infected or something. We should smudge it.

At 1:19 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Now that I am home (eindelijk!) I shall take some physic (ginger schnaps, most likely) and go to bed.

I haven't gotten the plague. I take 500 mg of vitamin C every night. :)

Hope you're beginning to feel at least somewhat better, Ms. Fabulous. Here's to feeling 100% and well! c\_/

Kali-licious, I tend to think it has a lot to do with the economy and a presidential election year. Too much uncertainty to spend money on yourself; your daughter can take dance classes, but better not spend that money on something fun for yourself. ::shrug:: And maybe I just need to take out an ad in the newspaper. ;)

Jacquib: Chuck E. Cheese is a chain of restaurants (in the U.S.A.) that features pizza and games that are played with tokens. You get tickets from the games which can be exchanged for, typically cheap, prizes. It is a rival of Peter Piper Pizza, another chain restaurant. If you don't have kids, or nearby relatives with kids, you would probably never enter one. :)

Yes, True Blood is based on Charlaine Harris's books. It is a series on HBO.

If you can stand watching on a little screen on your computer, you can see all the episodes of True Blood on: HBO's Site.

I'm sooooo hooked. I didn't read the books though. I don't know how true the show is to the books.

At 4:45 PM , Blogger Dragonsally said...

Chantrelle, it would only let me watch 2 minute snippets, drat it. from what I saw, its very much like the books though, which I loved.

At 4:47 PM , Blogger Chantrelle said...

oh bummer. I didn't actually try to watch them... damn HBO!
I do want to read the books, but now that I'm into the series I want to wait because I don't want to know what happens!

At 7:47 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

Val, that is a wonderful poem. I'm sorry I didn't say anything earlier.

Jess, the teacup is based off a beer mug that I saw used around 18-20 years ago in an AOL chat room. Or maybe it was StarText. I don't know, I've had two kids since then.
Beer mug is c(_), therefore a tea cup is c\_/. There was some way to show steam rising, but I can't remember what it was.

Ah good night sweet Fiends!

Lorraine I hope you are feeling better today! I am guessing that maybe you are not. I am thinking warm-cozy-chicken-soup-thoughts your way.

Gayle -- hope you have furniture soon. Furniture can be helpful.

Lovely poetry all around!

I think I am going to make fliers and stand on street corners shouting that the Bananapocalypse is nigh. I think there need to be Bananapocalypse t-shirts. (including the four monkeys)

Ariandalen I can just see the three (hear/see/speak) monkeys sitting next to the last one, whose arms are firmly crossed and who wears a distinctly sour expression.:)
I really like the teacup too.
A newspaper ad might be just the thing.:) It just bums me out whenever people refuse bellydance..after seeing what it does for women it's just frustrating.
Y'know how it is.:/

Spacedlaw you're home? Hope the ick is being summarily banished.
And that goes for you too, Lorraine.

It's quiet round these parts again today! I hope you're all feeling better, and just off watching True Blood or something. Or at least wrapped up nice and snug with a cabana boy to look after you, fetch you warm liquids, and give you foot rubs.
