Bees, and Photos of Bees and Just Who Got Stung?

Right. It's late, and I am almost too tired to be thinking. Certainly too tired to be writing, but after promising all day to bring you some Bees, I am going to Skull up my brain (see how I am evolving this new verb?) and Bee with you for a bit.

(Cut to the chase, Lorraine!) Right. The lucky winners in the Who Gets to Bee stung contest: Boss and the MPR Reporter. Boss on an unprotected bit of ankle, and our hapless reporter friend when he was unlucky enough to squash one under an arm.

But this makes for dull reading. Let's start with a little Girl-on girl full Bee Suit Wrestling, with The Birdchick and Miss Kitty..(Who won? Who cares!)

Kitty is one of the few people who can actually take a lovely photo of me. Here I am messing around with some WARNING Full on Voltage action tool. (No idea what it does but it lives in a little birdhouse on the fence post.)

Feeding Bees honey from my hand makes me so happy. Actually everything about tending bees does.

Cabal, while loving the bit where we all go off into the woods, does not share this love of our honey making Friends. That's Non-Birding Bill, bravely at the hives in only hat and gloves. Brave man. I haven't done that yet. May well not be brave enough.

In order to steal, er, harvest, the honey, you need to get the Bees to leave and go nicely back into the hive. You can do this a number of ways, the most direct being to take the full box, no light thing and give it a few good shakes. See Boss and I convincing the Bees to leave. See Boss and I Covered in Bees.

Another way fun day with the Bees. And all of us there. Check out the Birdchick Blog and Boss's for more photos and stories....Miss Kitty, it should be noted, took all of these photos today, and shared them with us for tonight's joint bee post. This one is my favorite: Quiche with Ross Rounds!

Love and Bees,
Lorraine

Yay! A bee post. Now I can go to sleep without wondering if I missed it!

I just love the bee posts. They actually make me feel peaceful and like the world is not actually falling apart but progressing just as it should. Thank you thank you thank you.

And Kitty these are really great photos.

Girl-on-girl wrestling... nice. ;)

Kitty, great photos! Quiche, is that your Princess of No tiara you're wearing in the second photo?

No, that's my "I got a bee stuck in my hair once and never again will it bee loose" tiara...Hee-hee...

Kitty takes REALLY good photos, look for more this week.

Oh yes....We have Plans...

Well, to be truthful, now that you mention it, I was right there to take that one!!!

And now that you have nipped in, yes, I am off for bed.

'Night, see you in the morning!

Ooo - I knew about the MPR dude, but not Himself. That will teach him to try to make you not wear a suit - the bees know....

Wish I could taste the honey, but honey and I aren't friends anymore - too many carbs for this poor girl - however, if we do have a skullishly fiend reunion, I hope there will be comb to sample.

Night all - long day for me tomorrow, having a non-threatening medical test, complete with needles and anethesi---anetheas---the stuff that puts you to sleep. I'll look forward to reading the comments slightly loopy....

Earlier, when i volunteered the journalist for sting-duty, i didn't really mean it! I swear!

Linked by Boss's post, i just bought a graveyard shirt. I hope Miss Kitty will be in San Francisco/Palo Alto so we can be properly introduced
:)

Too much sake w/ my ahi tonight to produce any more of a post...nighty night!

Woo hoo Beaujolais-Villages! Good friends we are.

Oh and The Myth-Busters are doing something with a Tesla coil at the moment (on my T.V. anyway). How cool are they?

I just love these bee posts. For all that a bite from a little bee could kill me, I am just fascinated by them (maybe that is why)

I hope the boss and the reporter are okay and the stings just stung a little.

Great photos - thanks Kitty.

At 10:07 PM , Blogger Rubius said...

Holy hive-making hives, bee-man!!

May the stings be few, the stung be allergy-less, and the honey be sweet enough to make the sting seem unimportant.

Thanks for the post!! I love the smile on Kitty's face in that photo... and Lorraine, you do look queenly!

Of course, the mere fact that you've mentioned it ensures that there is now a fetish community devoted to girl-on-girl bee suit wrestling...

Bee Suit Wrestling...LOL Looks like some sort of strange initiation or something.;)

Kitty you always come through with the good photos.:)

The bees really are fascinating from a safe distance. I'd totally be running away with Cabal if I was on the spot. Too scared of stings for my own good. Non-Birding Bill is indeed a brave, brave man.

At 10:31 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

Cool photos! Thank you Ms. Kitty. :)

Though, I must admit, you took a fascinating picture, Ms. Fabulous. Not only is it girl-on-girl wrestling, La Birdchick is trying to plant a kiss on Ms. Kitty. Interesting the things that happen when a honey harvest is opened to any and all visitors. Gives it a whole new meaning.

I've eaten a KK doughnut fresh, while the light was on, at a KK store. I was not impressed. The Krispy Kreme in Waco closed a little over a year after it opened. The local doughnut bakery, which has been around something like 50 years, is still open.

I have lots of smooshed, frozen bananas, but I've also used some. I make banana nut bread on a fairly regular basis. Usually, I use Splenda, instead of sugar, non-fat plain yogurt for sour cream, 1/2 whole wheat flour 1/2 unbleached all purpose flour, and walnuts. Due to Monday being equinox, I used sugar. It's kinda weird, though, as it doesn't get eaten as quickly when I bake muffins as when I bake a loaf.

you all are too kind.
i am about to get to my post, but Quiche, really, you got it all down,
bee-work is a dizzying experience. buzzy bees were bonking into my hat, and the more experienced beekeepers worned me not to let my nose touch the mesh, tempting fate...

I have learned from my mistakes - today I read this first, before the Bossblog. I would hate to be banned from the Fiends for disorderly reading!

And it's a good thing too - I don't think Boss said who got stung! Nice photos Kitty, and on your blog post too (is it wrong to comment on your blog on this one?). The whole thing is fascinating - I'd like to try someday too. I know there are lots of beekeepers around here, but I don't know any.

At 4:50 AM , Blogger louisa said...

My aunt had whatever the opposite to an allergy is with bees - her hands were painfully crippled with arthritis so she would stick them in a jar full of bees (the stings were less painful than the arthritis) and her joints would recover their flexibility. Not that you should try this at home, kids.

And yes yes yes to walnuts in banana bread, ariandalen! Both for texture and flavour, d-lish

At 4:59 AM , Blogger Jess said...

Covered in beeeeees! Hooray! \o/

The photos are very cool-- I'll be off to Kitty's to see the others in a minute. I love the photo of the little bee standing up to get at your finger. My cat does that. :)

(Note to self: bees are not like cats. Do not pet the bees.)

Heh, I was going to say something regarding girl-on-girl bee suit wrestling and an increase in interesting search terms, but Dean beat me to it!

I suspect the interview was arranged to serve as a subtle warning to other journalists. Clever that Boss took a sting, too, so it would all look like an accident.

At 5:09 AM , Blogger ivenotime said...

So nice you had a wonderful day at the hives - and Kitty, great photos, such talent! Love the bee suit wrestling match as well :) - what did Bill have to say about that?? It would be great fun to visit a hive and see honey being harvested (tho I couldn't do it in just hat and gloves - not that close!) Hope everyone is doing well, I doubt I will ever get caught up with comments - have a great Thursday!

So would "Full-On Voltage Action Tool".

At 6:56 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Morning everyone!

Let's see what my semi-tealess state can make of allthese comments.

Arthritus, I have heard that. (Hmm no spell check for firefox today, maybee it is just here every other day..)

See like the girl on girl beesuit wrestling was popular, ok, so more of that. Bill did not mind. Bill said "cool."

Rats. I can't find any fall clothes . And it IS fall today. Or yesterday. Hard to keep up.

The bees will lick honey right from your finger, but you must not pet them. Not so into that.

Miss Kitty was very brave, and did very well.

So did Euan Kerr. First for him, I am sure.

At 6:59 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Wuld that be a BEE Album then? Hee-hee..As an album cover that shot has popssiblies..

I did an album once called "Live Deadly Circuit" based on a sing Adam Stemple left on a light thing above our sink, saying "Do not touch! LIve Deadly Circuit"

AH, we used to live on the edge...

At 7:04 AM , Blogger Jess said...

Live Deadly Circuit is an excellent name for an album, but not so good as a thing in your bathroom. The sign was a wise thing to put up.

I want this sign in my kitchen.

Inspired by this blog I went home yesterday, picked up one of those melt-in-your-mouth donut-croissants and a roast. I made a definite night-garden roast including parsley, thyme, and rosemary from my rooftop garden. It was finally out of the oven around 11:15pm last night (truly a midnight dinner) and smelling so good I could barely resist it until it had cooled sufficiently.

I felt like a night garden rapist or something though, running out into the rain to rip branches of herbs and all the nice fleshly leafy bits from the plants I have been nurturing for months... digging my newly bathed fingers into the dirt to try to find a long forgotten onion.. it was kind of strange... it felt... violent. Poor herbs.

but still..it tasted GOOD.

I will send in a pic of me in my new graveyard shirt when it arrives :)

I may not be around much today, Ben's sicker today--woke up white as a ghost feeling pukey...poor guy!! He's asleep in the recliner w/ a bucket next to him now. No fun to see your little one sick :(

Is anyone else (non-vegetarian) out there squeamish when it comes to handling meat?

I know I am a natural carnivore.. I love to eat all that's savoury in life and I crave it but I have a problem handling meat. I can't disassociate it from the animal whenever I have to handle the raw stuff. I got all weirded out last night when trying to handle the bloody meat. I didn't want to touch it and then when I did I washed my hands like crazy afterwards. I can barely handle the removal of bones without wigging. Maybe I have just been around vegetarians too much.

Rubius, I also make a lot of dinners that're done cooking around midnight, because I don't get home until 7-8, most nights. ;) And I'm the opposite -- I love bloody raw meat on the bone. RAWR.

Chantrelle, sorry to hear Ben's sicker. ;/ Hope he gets better soon.

The short, non-technical answer is that the site's down until a bit after 11 p.m. PST. The technical answer is that I'm waiting for some DNS changes to my server to propagate, and Speakeasy's next push is at 11 p.m. Thought I'd be done at 7 PST for that push, but missed it by a few minutes.

Things have been really crazy for the laser lady but I really do think she still wants to make the Bengal/Laser vid. I'd love to see what Kitty does with the wheel. My godchild and I have spent much time entertained by the Bengals on wheels vids on YouTube.

Okay. Good night sweet fiends!

I rather like 'something utterly vexing'.

I think we're well placed for taking over the world. The skulls and bones are in all the right places.

Stacy, Ms. Fabulous is referring to "Law and Order: SVU (Special Victims Unit)." Hey, they're all the right letters! ;)

Nathalie, PST is Pacific Standard Time, though the blog is set at Pacific Daylight Time. At least, until we go back to standard time the last Sunday in October. Or is it the first Sunday in November? Whatever, Daylight Savings Time should be abolished. :P

pacific standard time

does the pacific have a standard? i thought it was ruled by the moon... as are we all.

naturally; mercury is retrograde; that would explain a lot; if you're into that sort of thing. btw; did you all know that Venus is the only planet that rotates clockwise. All other planets are counter-clockwise. Figures

c- u can tell i don't watch tv.
otherwise i'd know there was a 'special victims unit' as opposed to the 'ordinary victims unit'.

in my book, victims; aka: old minions who have out lived their purpose do not accord a 'special' anything.

and just try to come up with as many words as you can that start with the letter 'u' that fit? it's kinda fun in a twisted, sick sort of way.

one of my favorite words 'umbral' as in relation to 'penumbral'. ooohhhhhhh..... then onto 'penultimate'.

anyone else up late with favorite weird words wanna play?

I imagine that Law and Order: SUV would be a lot like Torchwood. Only with Lawyers. Lawyers driving round Cardiff in a van.

It's too early to be thinking of things. Everything that comes out of my head is weird right now.

Aw, thanks Stacy! :) A haiku for my very own!

HA! I slept the sleep on the non-walking DEAD in my bed last night and feel great now. (Sorry Adri, but Happy B'day to the Sprout!)

Yes, Jess, the interests are all yours, five of them.

You Fiends do know that hit TV shows have been developed and sold with less premise than you managed while I was sleeping?

I mean, what do you think the pitch for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sounded like?

It is such a lovely day here, and so much to do. Miss Kitty flies out tonight, and I have a show.

Have one tomorrow day, if can get there or rather find dog care, adn after that I need to go straight to the night gig, then another day on Sunday..

Pipes tonight at the show!

I do like these shirts, and am talking with Kitty about them...

Hey everyone. Sorry I dropped off the radar, but that happens from time to time. Thanks fro the well wishes and I’m feeling better, but it’s still in my lungs. Grrr..cough…rrrr I should be fine for tonight though Q.

I have not read the blog for a few days, but I did see the shirts and I think you did an amazing job Val! I especially like the Miyazaki tree spirit that snuck in there. There are other references as well, but I’ll leave that fun for each individual. :) Also, an excellent new photo of you as well.

Clearly there is WAY too much for me to catch up on but I’ll do my best, and I’ll see you tonight Q. (and anyone else who comes out!)

P.S. I always wanted to be a part-time cabana boy. ;p

At 9:25 AM , Blogger ariandalen said...

Nothing to be sorry about, Ms. Fabulous. Somebody needs uninterrupted sleep, and since you've got four gigs in three days, it might as well be you. I certainly don't hold it against you.
:)

At least we don't have to find a dog-sitter for our dog. She's just fine in her pen. She has kittens that play with her. Really. I watched them this morning.

At 9:33 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Hey Paul, you can be our Cabana boy f you want to. However, we will need you in a loincloth, with a palm fan at the Party next JUne. And you must fan all the bikini clad women as they lounge by the pool...Tough work. And do it WHILE drinking with Val...

I feel some rock coming on tonight! I am so ready!

(there will be rock no doubt on Saturday too)

If I left Cabal in a pen with Kittens he would no doubt have fun, but it would not be good for the kittens involved. In fact, I am going with BAD.

At 9:43 AM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Vixeny lawyers? How could I let this one pass? (Even if that specific lawyer is not feeling vixeny at all, more like a squashed bug, having just come home after 10 hard hours of travel - nothing on Kitty's scale for such things but way to much for my medieval muscles).

Happy birthday to Eldest! Seven is a marvelous age to be.

Too brain dead to even attempt haiku...
Have a great gig tonight, Lorraine.

Too much work to be done

I knew the tree spirit looked familiar, but I couldn't put a name to it. Nice!

Pantagruel (and Q), would you be horribly offended (or even mildly offended) if I borrowed the skulls for a shirt-making experiment? Just a one-off, to practice with the equipment, because I'm too lazy to make my own design?

We are studying banned books in my Children's Literature class. ALA keeps track of them but I was wondering if any of you here had a favorite? Banned books that is. I have not chosen what I will read for this up coming week. Would love some input.

I would LOVE to go to the show on Sat but can't get a sitter. I am trying to line up a regular sitter but am not having any luck. Of course, I am ridiculously picky about who spends time with my 4 year old. I think it may get easier once I am fully moved and can do proper interviews. I suppose hope springs eternal and there may be a chance that I will find someone tomorrow. :)

At 4:44 PM , Blogger gaypet said...

Oh and Val I want to go out and drink with you because I think we may be well matched in that way. Although I would be willing to bet that I have MANY pounds on you and could probably drink you under the table. :P Hot, right?

So who else is home on Friday night? Please talk to me. :D

At 5:00 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Gayle, after lifting weights for over 20 years, I weigh more than you would ever dream. Nurses look at the scale oddly, look at me, make me get back on, then go and look at my chart, scratching their heads. If I tied my weight to my self-worth, I'd have had to go lay down on the 405 years ago. So you might well lose that bet. CX

At 5:07 PM , Blogger gaypet said...

Hee hee. All I'm saying is that it would be fun to try. :) Lifting weights is my fav but it has been YEARS of, well, not doing that so...

Hallo, Gayle, and anyone else who's about. I'm always home on a Friday night, but tonight's special: we're cleaning the house. Whoop de friggin' doo! It's only 8:00 and I want to go to sleep already. We've got friends coming to stay for the weekend, though (thus the housekeeping frenzy), though, so that'll be fun.

They have a two-year-old daughter, and they tell me she's positively bouncing off the walls at the prospect of getting to play with our cats. This could end badly. :D But I'm hoping it'll just be cute.

Now what's our pitch, again? Law and Order: Space Vixens? I'm so confused.

I had a dream last night that I drove to SPOOKYHAUS on a whim one Saturday morning and hoped that FabLo wouldn't be too upset to have me show up unannounced.

Tomorrow's a big day! National Book Festival and then I'm taking the fam to the Jim Henson exhibit at the Smithsonian. And I get to see Kitty! I'm bringing the video camera; I may even remember to use it.

I'm getting over some weird bug. I was feeling terrible yesterday. I'm feeling better today. I'm still a little out of sorts, though. Hopefully I'll be firing on all neurological cylinders by tomorrow morning.

At 5:59 PM , Blogger gaypet said...

Having a child and many cats, may I add that I hope the two year old survives in tact. Just remember that it is more important for the child to learn respect for animals than for your cats to learn respect for two year olds!

Oh AND, if they have a two year old it is pretty unlikely that their house is very clean so don't worry about the state of yours. :)

At 6:01 PM , Blogger gaypet said...

Wow Dan, that sounds like a wonderful day! Have fun!

At 8:04 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

I'm home. Got the cupcakes baked, frosted and delivered to classroom. Now I have a cake to bake and frost to take to Chuck E. Cheese tomorrow for the birthday party. The problem is that only three of thirteen invitees have responded. It seems that few people in my area understand that R.S.V.P. means you call and say whether you will be attending, or not. ::sigh::

At 8:34 PM , Blogger Jess said...

Kids' parties are hard work, ariandalen-- you'd think other kids' moms would know that well enough to get back to you. How irritating. :( I'm sure it'll be a good birthday for Eldest, though. Can't go wrong with Chuck E. Cheese: when I was a kid, I didn't care who else came, as long as I could get on the Ms. Pac Man machine. (I was good at Ms. Pac Man.) :)

Gayle - fortunately our cats are very gentle, and the impending toddler presence (no less than Audrey of night garden poem fame!) is good around pets. I suspect that, at worst, the girls will hide under the bed, and she'll spend the weekend trying to coax them out.

Have fun at the book fest, Dan! And I hope the dream-trip (that's one heck of a commute) went better than the driving dreams I have, where I start out in a car, and then bits of the car start falling off; usually they end with me running down the road, still holding the steering wheel. This is why I don't like driving.

pantagruel; gaypet;
Fod knows the worst thing to tie your self worth to is the scale (or the checkbook). Not saying you guys were; but it's awfully hard to keep that thought when I'd love to go be a speed bump anytime I try to get back into the 'old jeans' and realize 'middle age' is just that@! Frickin right around the middle@!@ Certianly I could excersize more; keep from eating foods I like (there are so few and they ALL are sweet!) But Dang nabbit! Just how many hours aren't there in a day! :sigh:

arian; I envy you truly. To go back to that time; the parties; gifty bags; kids running around in stocking feet having the time of their lives! Those days were so precious and I'm glad I was there for every blessed one of them. I remember hand stamping little cards that I attached to 20 each little plastic drinking cups filled with fun Halloween treats for my daughters kindergarten class. The other moms just looked at me like I was insane but it was a blast! Girl Scouts was loads of fun too! When my troop 'bridged' from Browines to Juniors; we all drove to San Francisco and our bridging ceremony was :you guessed it: walking across the Golden Gate. I'll never forget that.

oh down memory lane; sorry. My daughter is 15 now; into dance and computers. And she still is the most amazing person I know. :)

Hope all is well with everyone this Friday night. I'm finishing up a baby blanket someone wanted me to make for them. Nice to sit and make something so simple for a change.

Have fun with Kitty, Dan (although I hope the bug will stay put - going to a show/fair/party with something bugging you is not fun).

Here it's already Saturday and I have slept most of the Friday evening.
I still feel like a bug but not a squashed one anymore.

Jess, have your cats been warned? They might well not be amused...

Now off to the market, with me.

At 10:16 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

See, that's part of my problem. I'm old enough that the birthday parties I went to when I was in school didn't have goody bags, and there were no Chuck E. Cheese's or inflatable jumping places. You played games, the birthday girl/boy opened presents, then you ate cake and maybe ice cream. I still know what you mean, though. I made cookies for her kindergarten Halloween party last year because I couldn't find Halloween Oreos anywhere. I used a recipe for black and white pinwheel cookies, used mini-cookie cutters, and the teacher and other mothers that were there were amazed.

Jess..Ms Pac Man was the one I was best at too. But nothing will ever beat Centipede. (but ONLY the arcade version with the rollerball.;)

Have fun Dan! Sounds like it's gonna be a great day.

And now I really really gotta be off, since I have to be up again in hmmm 5 hrs to drive to a bellydance workshop. Going to take classes from Elizabeth Artemis Mourat for my birthday: Turkish Oryental, Turkish Rrom, Skirt Flourishes and Veil.
Really should sleep..too excited.;)

AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH, I just lost everything I wrote. It's never as good second time around.

Ok

Hi Fiends,

So far I've missed:

Girl-on-girl wrestling, great photos from Miss Kitty (the camera and I loathe each other. I can make a tropical paradise look like a moonscape and the cmera makes me look like someone I don't recognise).

Bee stings - great to see management taking a hit for the workers.

Doughnuts, T-shirts, herbicide, sick kids - well kids, more haiku, re-branding, bee leashes.

There has also been beer, hints of drinking competitions and cabana boys (sigh). I love this place. There have also been suggestions of cabana boys in loin cloths and palm fans. I would like to see cabana boys in budgie smugglers and palm fans and peeling grapes between waves of the palm fronds. I would also vote Pantagruel Bitch Queen of the Universe, or at least the USA, she would do a much better job than anyone they have to offer.

There has also been PMS, PST, SUV & SVU.

Slumber parties, kids birthdays & cupcakes, Fiends birthdays (Happy Birthday everyone).

Sickies, wait until 1-2 weeks after you're feeling better to do heavy exercise. As my doctor said "dead is not a good look". But, maybe that's just because I'm getting on a bit.

Miyazaki Tree Spirits (huh?), vixeny lawyers, travellers, houseguests, trips down memory lane, rude parents and can someone please tell me what Chucky Cheese is?

Cthulu carrots. Just how hilly is the terrain on which these carrot/mandrakes grow? Is it possible new genetic material is urgently required? Is this a case of carrot cousins marrying carrot cousins?

We've heard about sick & well dogs, zombie haiku, eau de felin, going over the edge (better view this side), True Blood (is this based on Charlaine Harris' "Sookie Stackhouse" series"?) I loved those books.

Sore knees (hope they get better soon), Neil Diamond rocks, busy fiends, tutoring football players (should get paid double 'cause they're dumb) and free belly dancing.

Gaypet has way too much study. I don't remember doing that much. Guess it depends on your degree.

Lastly, Robopandas. Great present, only the follow up videoing could use a tiny bit more work.

Have I missed anything?

I skulled, but I'm not sure I got it right.

It's nice to be back :):)
