Bees and Gardens

Today is one of the nicest Spring Days that ever did happen, the sun is shinning , the Birds are chirping ( and we even have the Hot Birdchick out today so we even know WHICH birds are chirping ). Just got back from checking on the Bees. There is something truly spiritual and quite magic , about tending Bees, I think. I'm not sure how to put it, but I feel so connected to every bit of the earth, and to everything , every time we work with them.

The girls are doing pretty well, I am sure Sharon will do a complete post on exactly WHAT they are doing over at Birdchick.com. I know we found drone cells today and that the drones are the boy bees and they do NOTHING except eat and find a Queen to mate with.

( nope, hee-hee, I am not EVEN going to go there....Too easy! )

We went down into the hives, and looked for ( and found ) Funky Comb. By the time we were getting done we were getting Bonked pretty frequently. Being " Bonked" is Bee Talk for " Get the heck away from my honey!!!!!!!! " And it's what they do before they sting. It's kind of freaky and louder than you would think. ( so so wish Malena was here for this! She would LOVE BEEing! I can just see her, the little goofball, talking to them, and singing to them and wanting to take them home and keep them for pets! )

The garden is finally done. ( well, as " Done " as a garden ever gets, it is IN at any rate ) Here's Terry, the Wonder Gardener, and I doing American GOTHic. ( I slay myself! )

The various Things that have been grilling outdoors seem to be done now. So I am going to sit under a tree and contemplate Bees and Gardens. I hope whatever you are doing this Holiday weekend is as nice as mine is turning out to be.

Love and Bee Magic,
Lorraine

Well, so far this weekend I have gone running, shopping for floor edging, tidied the study, and met a friend who'd just run a marathon. (I'm exhausted just thinking about it, myself.) Nothing quite as exciting as bees.

Sitting under a tree is for tomorrow, when I will not be at work but almost everyone else I know will be. Time to chill!

I am fascinated by your bees! It's just the sort of thing I fantasize about doing (though our housing association forbids them, sadly. But understandably. I don't know if they'd have enough to eat really.)

Y'all are so cute.:)

That is a pretty funky looking comb..how do you get it back in without hurting any bees?

Sadly we're all thunderstorms here in the land of That Race. (At least it's keeping the traffic semi-reasonable;) I'd SO be grilling if I didn't live in an apartment.
Enjoy your lovely evening!

If they build on the top or bottom of the frame, we scrape it off. Sometimes if it is going out, you can kind of press it back in, but sometimes you just have to leave it.

If you are thinking of doing Bees, go and take a bee class, there is a lot more than you would think, that you need to know. The more bees we have in this world tho, the better.

Sharon is working on her blog entry of today now, and she is going to put up a video of me Bee Tending! I am so excited, it's my first video! Malena! I was on camera!

( tho thing thing would probebly be a bigger hit if Malena had played ME, hee-hee....)

We need some big thunderstorms here! I keep hoping, Weather Girl that I am!

Not even going to mention that drones have (to quote from Sharon) a "wide, blunt rear end" ? (visions of drones loafing on a sofa all day, drinking nectar and gobbling junk food...)

Sounds like you had a nice weekend (or having still, possibly ?)

Sounds like wonderful fun, and the beekeeping has been very intriguing - I doubt they would do well on my property, since it is old dunes - not much grows well, and my thumb doesn't help. My girls and I are sitting in the Myrtle Beach airport - we met my husband here and had a lazy 3 days at the Pawley's Island beaches - bliss, but now back to reality and home to Michigan - it was supposed to rain, but we didn't get any - and we could sure use it - send your storms my way Lorraine! Have a wonderful holiday all!

I love those wacky bees. Can't wait to get into one of those suits. You can read about my memorial day party adventures on my blog.
Lorraine and I are getting ready for a HUGE basement blowout sale so stay tuned. We have to make room for more cool stuff.
XOXO
Malena

something I have always wondered... can the bees' stingers actually penetrate the white outfit? What type of material is it anyway? I had heard that the white colour is at least partially there in order to dissuade the bees from attacking you. I have always assumed the fabric would also be too thick to penetrate but your stories of being 'bonked' made me wonder anew.

I do hope Fred-the-unlucky-cat is keeping well clear of the hives...

Being bonked sounds terrifying. I imagine every bee horror film I've seen and the idea of a wave of bees bonking me right over and pummelling me.

Well, my weekend was very wet, but I went to Scarborough Faire anyway. On the way to faire Monday, we were stuck in traffic next to a particular semi. There were several bees hovering around this semi, though we never could tell why.

They haven't penatrated the suits YET and noone has gotten stung. When they bonk they just sort of run into you. Sharon says if you wear black they think you are a bear.....

I think my movie if up over at www.birdchick.com !

FIrst time on film not playing music. Playing a Beekeeper. Which is not a stretch for me as I am an assistant Beekeeper, hee-hee, but we all start somewhere....
