Death Cake!!!!!!!!!

I was walking around the grocery store and trying to think what to serve my Guest tonight for dessert, as obviously I do not have time (Or inclination) to MAKE anything.

Then, there it was. A Death Cake.

I laughed so hard. The store people laughed. I said "What the heck IS this? A funeral cake???? Something special for us Gothy types who can't let go of Halloween? Nothing screams Thanksgiving like a Death Cake!"

It was quite the Adventure, this Thanksgiving shop, check this out:

Au Gratin Potatoes! Says so right on the box! Who knew potatoes came in boxes????

And no meal would be complete without Hors-de-vors! (Hey, kitty requested them)

And of course, a full array of impenitents to cook them with.....

Now, back to check on the updates, I am loving this Fiendsish Thanksgiving! And very thankful of all of the Fiends!

Love and Death Cake,
Lorraine

Actually I have this theory that the person who does the cakes over at your shop (or for it) is a lurker here and just KNEW you needed a special cake for a special occasion.

I want cake!!!

It's been a day - the friend in hospital wasn't getting out, so I went to visit and while there they said 'You are getting out' and so I got her out, and took her to dinner with Pa and finally got her home and I'm home and it wasn't the day I expected, but she's home and that's got to be good.

However, I was so present in her moments that I forgot to be present in my own, and don't feel like I've had a Thanksgiving Meal, and there's nothing fun here to eat, so I'll have to figure out how to brighten my own dinner. I can do that!

But BOY, I want that cake!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it - how long until Kitty? We are all so excited - thank fod for good Midwest Weather.

At 1:00 PM , Blogger Rubius said...

Good job Siri.

btw... Thanksgiving tip... if you don't want cranberry but still want that sweet/tart taste try Pomegranate... it is the right blood red and kinda emulates cranberries.

At 1:01 PM , Blogger Marjorie said...

Maybe Val is out looking for a death cake of her very own?

Siri, sorry to hear you've not feeling you've had a proper celbratory meal. Anything in the freezer you can add garlic and wine and herbs to, to cheer it up?

At 1:07 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Maybe that turkey is part of the Cabal's cabal and got the better of Val?

I could do with some cake too.

At 1:15 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Memo to those in charge of such things, RE: The FIends: Let them eat cake!

I slay myself.

Siri, hang out with us, we are having a proper Thanksgiving.

I picture Dread Val battleing with this turkey, wrapped in dental floss, fighting to the bitter end....

At 1:17 PM , Blogger Siri said...

Hmmm - there just might be some champagne in the fridge - there's left over toad in the hole from last night, and some spanakopata (sp? - too lazy to go look it up) I can do this.

I too am a little worried about Val...and all of you who are cooking up storms.

Death Cake! How did they know?

My adventures are of the not-cooking variety today. Dropped Son+ off at Grandma's (some apprehension about being around his dad- hasn't actually seen him since last Christmas Eve) but lots o' cousins to buffer things.

Went to House of Wu to get duck- lots of cars in the parking lot, why not?
They were not actually open. It was apparently the whole local Chinese community picking up their T-Day dinners. Bah!

Hrm I thought- will my holiday dinner consist of foraging in my cupboards? They are sadly bare, I've been working too much to stock up.

But no! Silly Beez! I live just up the road from the fabled Eat Street. I took my adventure to Shuang Hur Food Market (which was packed, me being the only Caucasian in the store) and got fresh sweet yams to bake and crispy 5 spice barbequed duck and lily flower sweets.

I am a happy woman. I need to go back there when I have a whole day to shop. the place is incredible!

At 1:25 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Beez, I will go with you! That market sounds wonderful! I didn't know about it, but I know where you are speaking of...

Hey, Siri, if you have champagne, you are SET!

At 1:29 PM , Blogger Siri said...

I'm just sayin'! It is in there, and will be in me, before the end of the day!

At 1:29 PM , Blogger Beez said...

Quicie, we wil explore.

It has everything you could possibly want for cooking any kind of Asian food- Indian too I bet. Also anything you didn't even know you wanted, and pots! knives! dishes!, 5-level bamboo steamers!

I saw a wok big enough to take a bath in if you are so inclined.

At 1:31 PM , Blogger Beez said...

Oh yeah- mangoes by the case.

....just sayin'

At 1:34 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Cases of Mangoes???? I am so there. LOVE shops like that....

I am going to move the may yet be living ficas, and the poop-wheel and set the table...

At 1:36 PM , Blogger Rubius said...

ah you see I pictured it with VAL all trussed up in floss and the belligerent turkey holding her down and flossing HER teeth yelling 'how would you like some floss!!! huh!!! how do you YOU like it!!'

not that I don't think Val could totally pwn a turkey.

and don't ask me how the turkey is yelling... I don't want to know which orifice it is using.

Val may have her own troubles, but mine are worse.

Let sleeping ficas's lie!!!!!!

Forgot the tree went UP, and it took down a vase of black roses, and my skelly hand pedastal thing from the top of a skeloton cabinit, THEN realized tho the plant was dry there was water in the BOTTOM, and it went everywhere, and what few leaves it had left all came down.

The Bengals of course, loved this.

Hmmph.

Whispered voice on the Wind: "Make a Death Cake today."
Bakery employee: "Think I'll make a Death Cake today."

Got the floss-netted turkey in the oven, still scheduling when to start the other items, and just realized we need to wash all the fancy china I got out for the occasion. Whoops! Trying out a recipe for Lime Butter Mashed Yams.

At 2:27 PM , Blogger Rubius said...

Water in the bottom just may be the reason for the death of the plant in the first place. It could have rotted the root system... even while the plant was starving for water.

roots rot if you don't let the water drain away from the bottom of hte plant when you water it... which I personally know is NOT EASY with an indoor tree.

sorry to hear about the death of that lovely ficus. I thought it was a beautiful plant.

Yeah, Nat, that is exactly the animation type I pictured it in too.

I think that Death cake will do brilliantly for our Christmas, to be celebrated with my goth friend. Must copy pic and remember.
Siri - you are a start. I hope you managed to have something yummy
Nathalie, I haven't seen that Red Riding Hood for yonks. Cool.

At 2:37 PM , Blogger Beez said...

hrm- I have seen ficus "shock out" from being brought back indoors and lose all their leaves, only to have regrowth start up again- don't give it up for lost quite yet.

At 2:38 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

The Ficas is NOT dead! It just goes a little, uh, dormant, in the winter. The bottom thing was too small for the pot, so the pot sort of sat on top of it, and it could not reach the water. I put it in a bigger tub and put it in th eRomance Room, where it can get some light.

Such cooking!!!!!!! I only hope Kitty is WAY impressed with all of my efforts.

I even out up spider lights and a Xmas tree, which I never do, the tree part. Someone gave it to me, years ago, and I have never had it out of the box, it is wonderful, only three feet high, and it changes colours.

Kitty likes such things. I want her to feel at home.

What's funy, is thatnow it is up, Ikind of like it. Not taking it down. I don't dcorate seasonally. Once something is UP it stays UP!!!!!!

I want Lime Yams! Fods. Dishes.

just as a point... my friend's dwarf hamsters poop on their wheel too.

Good to hear it isn't dead. Dead plants make me sad... but if it was where I think it was... it surely does need more light at this time of the year.

safe driving!!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Ms. Fablo, I hope that Miss Kitty arrived safely and that y'all are eating soon. I am back from our foray into parent and family land, and it was . . . odd. Sweet at times, way shorter than normal, no one talked about anything in particular (and nothing confrontational, thankful to say!), and my mom cried when I left, which made me saddish. And I have TonO'Leftovers, which taste so delicious and I'm planning on eating for a long time and then looking at my homework.

Hope everyone has/had a lovely day! Safe travels to you all who are still on the road.

I want the Death Cake. Just sayin'.

At 6:16 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Right, back now. The turkey was dominated; the red chili oil with sage leaves made an excellent gravy for it as well. Best Friend totally failed at his stuffing-making, though. I made blueberry pie, and mashed yams with garlic.

Had a very cryptic message from Malena earlier saying, 'Sorry about all this,' to which I replied, 'Sorry about what, exactly?' So we shall see what's up there. Now I must go make myself look presentable so I can head on over.

How is Kitty-fetching going?

At 6:17 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

No one pooped on the Poop wheel.

And oh Fods, there's the Death Cake.

Hey, did you TIVO that Top Chef? I missed it last night, and was seriously disappointed....but can't find it on tonight's DirectTV schedule.

The Ozzy Osbourne Samsung phone texting commercial just came on (where he can't be understood, so he texts his coffee order, taxi directions and even what he wants to tell his psychiatrist) .....anyone else think this is one of the most hilarious commercials ever while still feeling vaguely guilty?

Oh, Zippy the Pinhead used to eat Ding Dongs with Tabasco sauce.

At 7:33 PM , Blogger Beez said...

I just saw that commercial. I think it's hilarious, and I don't feel the least bit guilty.

For lovers of red wine, Penfolds is always a good drop, but Penley Shiraz has to be my favourite and it's only $40.AUD. (which is probably nothing to the US dollar right now!).

My favourite Red wine area is Coonawarra in South Australia, which is where Penley is from. So, if you ever get the chance, do yourself a favour and buy a case.

Now I'll leave with a haiku

It is always safe

I wish you ALL well.

Nathalie, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I am sorry to hear about your Father-in-law. I hope you have a lovely, peaceful day.

Thanks for the photos, Malena and Val. Looks like you had a great time.

Hurray for Fritos and Death Cake! Here is to Quiche and Kitty having a fun day today.

Thanks fiends.
I have to protest against the lack of carrots in those pictures. Which make it look like you had TONS of fun (as it should be).

Oh, Sally, I hope she recovers quickly and completely!

And Nat-law, happy birthday.

And I'm sorry to hear of your father in law. And the combination of the two occurrences.

Sal, my toughts are with oyu, keep us posted on your Mom, there are always Fiends around. Big hugs!

You tooo Nathilie, and again, Happy Birthday! WIll you do something lovely this evening in Rome?

Looks like Malena and Val had some all night fun! Very silly girls!I liked the pictures, but did noticed a lack of carrotts as well...

Kitty and I will post our Thanksgiving movie later today, she is still sleeping, don't bother with popcorn, it's what we in the bussiness call a "Short"

I feel, as an actress, I brought a lot to my role. I play a women trying to keep her Thanksgiving dinner away from a Bengal!

My motivation was clear, and director/cameraperson Kitty was clear in her indtructions tho I had a bit of a time explaining that Mim was not going to wait for her to call ROLLING, but this was an on-going process and she had bettr just jump in.

Hope all you Fiends had a good day and are enjoying time off today, or if you are far away, that all news and Birhdays are good.

oh Sally, I am so sorry this happened while you were home alone. I'm sending you warm wishes and a big hug! And Olivia (dog) sends healing love over the seas.

Nathalie, my warm wishes and hugs go out to you and yours as well!

I am on my own so I shall most likely stay at home (and besides I have not celebrated my birthday for years).
I still have some fine Chianti to dominate so shall do so. There is still some nice food from yesterday to eat and plenty of cats willing to clamber all over me (if only to get at the food).

At 7:39 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I would not even have know it was your Birthday but FAcebook popped it up somewhere, NAthilie.

Food? Wine? Cats? Alone? And who amongst us thinks this is in any way a bad idea???

Three of the four cats in this house have had turkey and are now lying happily by the fire. The 4th, Le LEopard, has had turkey, and a loveyly hiss at me. I told him I loved him and he was my solace, but not sure it penetrated yet.

At 7:44 AM , Blogger gaypet said...

We are with you Nathalie.:)

Looking forward to the movie, Q and Kitty.

At 7:52 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Oh, it is a fine movie! The drama! The chase! The hunt! Hot women in ssexy PJ's! Bengals ripping and tearing into dead turkeys!!!!

You can do a LOT in ten seconds!!!!

Kitty is still sleeping. It IS kind of early, I admit, but we were taost by midnight.

Did see the Alan Moore, Art Spiegalman South Park tho, FODS, I laughed!

At 8:35 AM , Blogger Kitty Cat said...

DOH, it was Simpsons, not South Park, ya silly Devs.
and don't forget Dan Clowes, a comic book dream. EIGHT BALL! GHOST WORLD! except Boss was very missing.
Sally, your Mom is in my thoughts and wishes for a complete recovery. I have not had to walk down that road and I don't know how I will be able to. Drawing strength from friends is our best bet.

as for the nutso Fairyland Ranch girls, that is one non-traditional Thanksgiving, ladies!

the Bengal movie is going to be up shortly.

Wishing healing and comfort to you and your families, Sally and Natalie.

FabLo, it looks like you were Taoists by midnight.

The Butter Lime Mashed Yams was me. Discovered that the recipe was little vague but good. Can edit and post.

Meanwhile, felt like sharing this poem that I found scribbled on a scrap of paper this morning, from D.H Lawrence:

I own
part of the sun
as my eye
is part of me.
That I am
part of the earth
my feet know
perfectly, and
my blood is
part of the sea.
My soul knows
that I am
part of
the human race.

I've been away from t'interwebs all day - such a lot of comments o catch up on!

Sally, so sorry to hear about your Mum - particularly hard that you were alone when you heard. I do hope that you are able to see her soon, and that news is better. I'm sure it's a good sign that she was able to talk to you herself. I'm glad there were fiends here when you needed them.

Nathalie, Happy Birthday (even if it is almost over and you're not celebrating)

Malena - looks as if you & Val had fun, even without carrots..

Looking forward to Kitty & Quiche's film.

I spent 5 hours in court today. By 3 p.m we were arguing over a microwave. There are times I wonder why I spent 4 years at university...

I shall definately be dominating some wine tonight.Am I drinking alone? Nathalie? Louisa?

At 10:13 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

I am definitely drinking.

Who needs love when there's Wallace and Gromit?
Who needs love when there's good wine (damnit)?
Who needs love when the internet is hot and there loads of fiends around?

At 10:24 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

We love you , Nathilie!

And Sally wasn't ALONE exactly, she had Fiends!

SO there.

Kitty and I are going to post the movie now, and then do a wee bit of shopping that must needs be done....

Oh, I liked the poem too, Na. You have a lovely sense for finding words...

I wonder if Chantrelle found mushrooms?

I've just had a lovely game of "chase the cork" with the kitties and 3 of them joined in while the snob one (Ansia) probably regretted her position about "mingling with the peasants". We had loads of fun.

Excellent. Tybalt & I just had a quick game of 'chase the bacon', (He won, by the way)

Glad the poem is goodful. It tickled me, and I'm using it as a mantra today.

Oooh, I look forward to hearing about mushroom hunting too. That sounds so, so cool.

Here's the yams recipe. At least, here's the original ingredients (mostly), with directions modified after trying it out:

Lime Butter Mashed Yams

1 large yam
2 tbsp butter
salt and pepper to taste
1 lime
pinch sugar (I used raw sugar, the brown turbinado kind)

Peel and slice the yam(s) into 1-inch cubes. Place in casserole dish, adding just enough water to cover the bottom. Cover with tin foil and roast in a 350 F/ 175 C oven for approx 45 minutes to and hour, or until very tender. Remove from oven. There should only be about a tbsp or less of liquid in the dish - if there is more, pour out the excess. Add the butter , salt and pepper, and mash gently. Zest the lime directly into the yam mixture, then cut lime in half and squeeze in juice of one half. Add a pinch of sugar. Taste and adjust seasonings, adding more lime if you wish. If preparing more than one yam at a time, increase seasonings proportionately.

At 11:04 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Miam. That recipe sounds perfect.

Happy Birthday Nat-law! And my thoughts are with you and yours in this transitional time.

Sally. Hope all is okay with your mom.

Poem was great!

Here is a YouTube channel with some lovely animal songs. Check it out.

Have you guys heard about this nightmarish event. Yet another good reason NOT to shop on this day.

At 11:30 AM , Blogger Rubius said...

Sally and Nat, sorry to hear about this. Hope you are doing alright. Know that isn't quite possible. With you.

Nat, Happy Birthday lovely one. Enjoy those cork games. Love your poem. Is it inspired by Leeds United, by any chance?

Malena and Val, glad you had a fabuloso time. Nice pics.

Lorraine and Kitty, hope you are having a blast. Looking forward to the vids... remember you promised us running bengal vids put to the Fox song.

Aleta, yikes. That's freaking scary. Crowds kinda suck.. as do psycho shoppers.

Na, love the poem. Has anyone here read D.H. Lawrence's Etruscan Places? It is a fine read.

At 11:31 AM , Blogger Rubius said...

I'm not actually sad about the lack of carrot photo... I could happily miss seeing that.

At 11:33 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Absolutely.
I was listening to that song in the car driving back from work.
:)
Right now I am making popcorn to get some animal attention back. Microbetta is already fascinated by the popping sound...

At 11:38 AM , Blogger Rubius said...

I have no car in which to listed to it but I have been bouncing off of Leeds United since I first heard it. Love it.

At 11:39 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

It is great but then again every single song on the album is superb.

Microbetta wants to dive into the popcorn bowl.

At 11:44 AM , Blogger Rubius said...

I'm gonna have to agree on that one. Fresh popcorn is so great. I don't have a popper and I have been missing it lately. Microwave popcorn is NOT THE SAME... by a MILE.

I remember stringing unbuttered popcorn for christmas tree decorating years ago. Boy was that ever messy and it took forever and you had to be excruciatingly precise or the kernal was wasted... and it didn't even look nearly as nice as I hoped it would. It's a good thing it was my idea and decision at the time or I would never have finished it.

At 11:50 AM , Blogger Rubius said...

Made a lovely rose pasta dish for my friend for dinner last night... but I wanted turkey (she's a vegetarian so no go last night).

But I'm making up for it with today's lunch... mashed potatoes and turkey with pomegranite juice to wash it down. The mashed potatoes are pre-made from the store (no it's not powdered dammit) and the turkey is pan-roasted sliced deli-meat but I DON'T CARE... I woke up this morning wanting turkey and it was the best I could do on short notice.

At 12:45 PM , Blogger Bridget said...

Death Cake is magnificent. Someone was inspired, that's for sure.

More hugs for for Dragonsally and Nathalie.

Though it wasn't Thanksgiving in Toronto, it was in my heart. I'm still American, and many of my loved ones were eating turkey somewhere, so it counts. I had Thanksgiving turkey here in October.

Also: To the woman who saw me trip and fall flat on my face on the sidewalk outside my house (I tried to miss the ground, and I failed), and then pulled up to the curb, asked if I was OK (I was) and offered me a ride down to the subway (I was obviously heading to the bus stop at the corner) and some baby wipes for my hands, and made me laugh on the two-minute ride down the road... thank you. From the bottom of my heart.

When I got out of the minivan at the subway and thanked her again, and she pulled away, I remember that it was my Thanksgiving Day. I smiled the whole way into the city.

Popcorn? Maybe it's movie night...

Bridget, what a great story! Glad you are ok too!

Trying to get the new blog with movie up...

At 12:56 PM , Blogger Siri said...

Bridget - that woman obviously was a fiend at heart - what a joy.

"my blood is part of the sea"
How that resonates with me - I miss the ocean every day.

Sally - been hoping to hear from you, but think that no news is good news. Or at least, no news is no news.

At 12:59 PM , Blogger Siri said...

Whew - glad the movie isn't up. I thought I'd somehow been excluded, just because I'd not been here for hours.

Also, how annoying is it for blogger to say "invalid password" when in reality it's my user ID I can't type correctly. Tell me what I'm really doing wrong, not where the disconnect is.

stooopid technology....

Sal and Nathalie, best wishes from the Fluffy Family in Texas. We hope you get some company and that everyone who's hurting gets relief.

It took me awhile to recover from too much of a good thing last night. It didn't SEEM like a lot of food, but when I still felt uncomfortable an hour after dinner I gave up and walked a few miles in the dark. With my trusty flashlight/deadly weapon. And iPod. Strangely, noone else felt inclined to join me. It did help, though. So did the large martini I got myself around.

Got to go take care of BF's kitty, Tigger (a mis-named little guy if there ever was one.)

Later, Fiendly Ones!

Thanks for the story Bridget. Nice to hear that kind of thing!

I think that was me with the drinking.. *raises glass*

Bridget, the story was heartwarming (and so glad you were OK) sometimes people surprise you in the best ways.

Fods I love you all Fiends, I truly wasn't alone last night - knowing someone would be there on the interwebs for me, and your hugs and love and laughter have brightened my morning, which started off with a very grumpy dragon woken by a SMS from a brother asking for news.
Phht, Why do they wait for me to do the ringing?
About to call the hospital, thought I'd wait until the staff have had a chance to do changeovers and catch ups and all that. I'd I'd had a chance to drink my tea will catching up on Fiendom.

Oh Malena, I love that your eyes are red in the first photo. They are all full of happiness making.
