In Which Cabel the Dog Goes To His First Concert...
Cabel got to go to his first concert today, and he had a wonderful time! I am a big fan of "Take Your Dog to Your Gig" day. It was at The Brookside, a lovely little spot about 10 miles north of Stillwater, in a town, whimsicly named Marine on St Croix. There was no lack of willing people to tend him while I played, tho he didn't LIKE it that he was not welcomed on stage. This is what I call his "Laughing Face" it means he is really happy.
Here he is with Paul and Judy, one of the owners. I am pretty sure it was love at first site with her....(Er, her and Cabel, not her and Paul)
Oh, I almost forgot! Happy Birthday to Karrin! Karrin is Johnny's most excellently wonderful fiance, we adore her! This was, after all, HER party! Yes, that IS a cow and a pig beside the stage, no one seems to know WHY, but there you have them..I love this place!
I played second set with the Bedlam Boys, and had some wild fun. I forget how good they are, and it is much more like playing with a rock band than what Paul and I do. Full on loud energy it is, you can feel the bass thru the floor all the way up your spine, and it definitely un-leashes something....
I made the remark at one point of how this "Used to be my band" and they all three replied in unison " Still is!!!!" As Johnny put it, "It's still your band, it just went sailing off on it's own for a while"
There's nothing quite so satisfying as great friends, lovely pub, outdoors, a stage and all the time one could wish to ROCK. I feel really, really lucky to have this.
Here's the Boys..
I will have to get pics from Karrin of me up there with them, didn't think that far ahead. Paul got up and took Johnny's guitar for a few songs too. Full on big band it was.
I learned an interesting fact from Paul, and that is we have a gig next weekend and he will be gone. He CLAIMS he told me of this, and I claim he was vague and was sure it would work out. Or not. Trying to get another partner, but my first picks, Johnny, Adam and Lojo (Hellos to Susan, whom I hear is lurking about and keeping Lojo up to date. Lojo says "You ARE a wacky bunch." I think this is a good thing) are all using the lame excuse that they are already gigging. Hmmph. I am sure my new friends in the Shondes would help out, but not sure flying them in from New York is economically viable. (tho it sure as heck would be some fun, from what I have heard of them)
Going to have to think on this one...
I will leave you with a nice shot of Dr Score on his Bike, as, what's not to love?
Love and Outdoor Music,
Lorraine

It sounds and looks like a wonderful day!
You were missed! It was a fine time...
Great Fod, since I posted, Mim managed to catch a MOUSE, as in a real one! Who knew I had them????
She was growling and chasing and possessive, as she is with the fake ones, but this one ran away! Great I thought.
Grabbed, a towel, and her and the mouse, which she had locked in her death jaws, and ran outside. Mim growling, mouse screaming...
I couldn't get her to drop it and being an EEK A MOUSE sort of girl ran next door for help, and just then came walking up the street, two women with a Huge Dog.
WAIT I yelled, my cat has a mouse I need help don't come near!!!!!!!!!!!
Needless to say, all except Mim and the Mouse dissolved into laughter.
I am such a WUSS I cried, and the women said And here I thought I was the only one who would be such a GIRL about a mouse!!!!!!!
Mim finally dropped it and we went in. The mouse scuttled off, hopefully wiser.
I feel like an idiot! I mean, it was only a mouse.
Perfect end for this weekend...
Certainly does, Dog looked like he thoroughly enjoyed himself, and everyone else too! Happy birthday to Karren, it looks like it was a marvelous day! Now, bout that gig next weekend- you could fly all of us in! just think - we could have bellydancing, basic first year irish dance, portraiture, weaving demos, comics, webby goodness, all Manner of Fun and Entertainment to the tune of the fiddle! Now That would be a gig (snort, giggle). Paul looks great on the bike, we just had a huge bike rally here in Muskegon which he may want to google - it's quite a big deal here, as well as the blessings of the bikes which happens in the spring i think. on some mountain. can you tell i don't own a motorcycle? I do know during those weekends it's cool to see more cycles on the road than cars. hope everyone else has had such a fun day too!
oh my goodness, my previous comment was in response to aletamay's - not in response to your mouse dilemma which i most certainly share as i despise rodents. it sounds funny tho - i have been laughing so hard my dog woke up and growled at me. ok, i have my sillies on, been up too long.
Hee!
When I first moved into this apartment there were many mice and I was a total wuss about them. I would scream and at least once spent the night on the sofa in the downstairs neighbor's apartment! That is part of the series of events that lead to me getting my sweet Ginger Snap.
It is much better now, and so am I. Every now and then we still get one. The last time I saw one I did not even scream! GS has killed a couple over the years. I must admit that it makes me proud when she does this. I hope that does not make me cruel.
I love that you carried them outside! I also love that you said "I need help don't come near!!" LOL. Seriously.
Flying you all in is the best idea in yonks!!!! I would love it if we all got together, that would be so fun, she says wistfully......
I am glad Cabel had fun, he is always so sad when we drop Boss at the airport. (which we did way to early this morning ) He is like "WAIT, you forgot the pack leader!!! Stay together!!! What are you DOING???"
But the gig cheered him up nicely.
Yes, we are all posting at the same time, hee-hee...
No it doesn't make you cruel, Aleta, I should have let her kill it, but I was afraid she WOULDN'T and then there is that to deal with, I wasn't thinking I just wanted it OUT!
We have all been up too long, hee-hee, I got about 4 hours sleep last night. It was all to silly out there...With the dog and the mouse and these women...High drama...
I napped after the airport run, but dreamed the whole time that I was at a Jonas Brothers concert trying to find Kitty, which oddly enough may be happening in a week or so, Medium Girls want to see a show, and I miss our Kitty...
Aww, Cabal looks so happy. There's something about a smiling dog that makes me smile seeing them. Pub, outdoors, good music, friends, and a happy dog? How could it not be a great time? And Paul, looking good on your bike -- I note the shirt had a Jameson logo; nicely done!
Mim the Mighty Hunter! Was she upset when you took the mouse away from her?
Thank you, everyone, for the good wishes about the unpacking and end of the move. At the moment, I'm waiting for my dinner to finish cooking in the oven: fresh salmon over wild rice, eggplant, and zucchini, with basil and rosemary. I'm so excited to have an oven that is accurate. Dude. And later I will throw everything into the dishwasher. Sweet, sweet joy.
Sweet joy indeed! There is something about ones own nest that is such pure joy, I am happy you have such a nest, Val, even if you are making me hungry!!!!
Paul does know his way around Jameson, comes with the territory....
Good ... whatever.
Lojo is entirely right (and most likely she would know).
Sounds like grand day out for all.
When are the loving birds getting married?
Cabal is such a cutie (and I am not really a dog person but he is SO cute. And sweet. Except to small fury things) I am glad you managed to cheer him up.
LOL on the mouse. I quite love the creatures so I feel for them whenever one the serial killers at my house catch one. But I want them well away of my books (and food. in that order) so reluctantly let the cats have their own criminal ways with the poor creatures. Outside the house.
Look at all those smiling faces at the gig..even Cabal had to get in on the happy.:)
Oh Mim, she is little but she is fierce! lol
You did well Lorraine, especially for someone who's an "eek a mouse!" person. Don't feel too bad, my Mom's friend Rose is so scared of mice that she jumps up on the nearest available chair or table and won't come down until it's gone. This wouldn't be so bad if Rose wasn't the owner/operator of a horse boarding operation and barn.;)
Lorraine, I'm sure you've read the report in which it's said that dogs tend to empathize with their owners - especially when their owners yawn. Is Cabal one of those kind of dogs, or does he just not give a damn? ;)
Cabal clearly wants to rock out on the stage with you.
Having heard the Bedlam Boys play, I am sorely sorry to have missed getting to hear you with them. That must be a time and a half.
Mim decided that the mice are spies for the Cabal, perhaps?
Looks fun! Hubby and I were stuck at home painting a room all weekend, so it's nice to get some vicarious out-of-doors good-times action. :) That's one happy pupster, there! And boy, look at that snow-white coat of his. He's beautiful.
I'm sorry for your mouse woe! We had a little mouse conga line coming in under the kitchen sink for a couple of years. (Probably the same five or six mice, over and over.) Every so often I still have to take the trap down the block to release another inmate. A girl gets pretty jaded about mice after forty or fifty trips like that. :D
Would someone please ask Nathalie to stop making me do grammar this early in the morning? She's making me do grammar. It's hurting my head.
I need experts.
Thanks for the link, by the way.
Not sure when or where they are getting married, I will ask...I am with you on Mousies, OUT of the house is fine, go,do mousie things, but not inside. Looks like I have a Mim tho to take care of that!
Kali, trust me when I say if there had been someone else to deal, they would have had to. Remember I was on my way to get help....
Hi Martyn, Cabal has the total Shepard loyalty. If Boss is home, Boss is packleader. If not, he moves onto me, then Merry Housekeeper. He does have moods, but can be cheered up with something like yesterday.
I think Mimis just plain nuts, Dan. She is REALLY possessive about food and goes into "Defend or DIe " mode when she eats, which is odd as she has never been deprived deprived, either by me or the breeder...
H Jess, Nathilie is making you do grammar? Is this the Italian? We are going to be quite the muiti language blog soon...
Looks like a really nice day! Good times.
I had a dog that would catch mice. And very generously bring me the head. I tried to explain that, as a Vegetarian, I would prefer NOT to have the head of a mouse but she didn't really care.
I am not afraid of mice but there is something about creatures that scurry that make most of us want to pick up our feet, I think. Now big bugs, beetles etc. EEEK!
And this from the women who loves spiders???? Hee-hee. All I I know about Beetles is that you can't use a Rhino Beetle for a key chain....
Just regular English grammar.
Pack loyalty is an awesome thing. My Dog is a Shepherd/Rottweiler mix, so she has the extra bonus of listening only to me. She likes other people just fine; she just sees absolutely no reason to take orders from anyone else, even if bribed. You can imagine the consternation this causes at say… the vet; on walks; parties…
I'm convinced that there's some deep racial memory that tells us Spiders, snakes, and vermin are BAD. Get Away Now! I was taught it's bad luck to kill spiders, because they bring you messages. But snakes and vermin? Ugh.
We've been debating whether the word "over" in the phrase clouding over would be an adjective or an adverb. I think we've settled on adverb. It's a long and dull story. (Though Nathalie produced an excellent one about drinking absinthe. She just comes up with these gems that stun me-- she's a fine talent. :) )
I'd be a better person for learning Italian! But... I'm not.
Wow! I'd never realised you could actually link to a single comment!
Cool...
(trying to deny the fact that I am being paid a compliment and going off to make tea to hide embarrassment instead).
Who knew??? Nathilie, that's wonderful, really beautiful! Truly...And I am kind of in awe that you are discussing these finer points of grammar in a language not your first...
I have a feeling some review is in order for me, especially if I am going to be learning it all in French soon...
Jess, why do I have the feeling that you have forgotten more grammar than I ever knew? Now you are going to make my head hurt! I have to try this myself...And start reading your blog.
(Stumbles off to find her own Struk and White...)
Wow Nathalie, I like the way you write. It’s very odd (for me) that you bring up absinthe as I was just having a conversation with a few friends about it just the other day. None of us seemed to know if it was still available for purchase or even legal in most states?
When I was down at the Pipestone National Monument this summer I found a large patch of wormwood growing and it brought the idea of absinthe to mind. I’ve always wanted to try it but I know that I am too uneducated in its use to do so safely.
Sunday was a lot of fun and it was a BEAUTIFUL day for a ride. I can’t tell you how that replenishes my withered soul. Lorraine was fantastic as she joined in seamlessly with her bedlam boys. I made a new friend with Cabal as well and now we are tight. Makes me long for the day when I can get a dog again.
As for the issues with mice, well I’m a guy so lets just leave it at that, but I will say that I am very sympathetic to your distress. ;)
Oops, sorry Val, didn't mean to ignore you, Jess and Spacelaw made my head spin for a bit.
Cabal will obey Boss, me and most other people. Unless he doesn't.
I think it is legal and one can buy Absinth again, but is it something like with Jagermiester? Wasn't the original Jager made with opium? And now they do one without, but it still has the reputation?
Is Absinth now the same as it was 100 years ago, where people saw the Green Fairies and whatnot? Is it still made with wormwood? Is it the same in the US as Europe?
We need to know....
Absinthe from certain makers was recently legalized, as they found some way to create it without the dementia-causing poison that was an allegedly unintentional byproduct of the ingredient substitutions used to make it cheaply back in the day. Or something like that.
Well Cabal is a good dog citizen now so he would behave. Unless provoked, of course (don't we all?).
Paul, I would not know if absinthe is legal in your state but there is a company in LA that make absinthe lollipops so I would assume it is legal there. There was a wonderful article by Heather McDougal on the subject.
Does that mean it has been reduced to a wormwood flavored liquor? Do we need to invent a new line of mixed drinks for it now?
Nathalie's a fab writer. I can't stress that enough. And she writes fiction in a second language! I mean: dude, HOLY COW. I don't think I'd feel comfortable doing that even if I was fluent in some language othe than my first.
*points at Nathalie*
*points*
Hee hee! I'm sorry about the inadvertent headspin, Lorraine. It's Nathalie's fault. She started it.
*points some more*
Yes, try some of the exercises! They're fun. I'm working through them to prepare for a course I'll be teaching in October; I'm learning a lot, actually. The whole process is proving to be a nice reminder of some of those things I'd thought I'd forgotten, or that I'd got lazy about, or lost confidence with. It's good stuff. :)
Because English is not my language, I NEED to discuss grammar. Otherwise, I'll never write decently.
No, absinthe is still wonderful - just it doesn't make you as crazy as it used to (depending on how much you are drinking of course).
I use it for cooking as it is a little more bitter than your average Pastis.
Nathilie sent me Absinth lollipops she made herself, which I loved, since I had probably best not be drinking any of the actual stuff.
Now I want to go and read up on it some more tho....Perhaps I shall venture a report one of these days...
Nathilie IS a very good writer. Now we are embarrassing her, but the truth must be told. I think it will be interesting , for me, to see if I can ever write in French. Or how much I am going to be able to learn. I also think I had better brush up on my English Grammar, in preparation for the French...
I had not made those lollipops, Lorraine. They came from Lollyphile (then LitPop). I still have a few and they have melted under the extreme heat - but still taste great.
I should drink a little absinthe and see if saves me from terminal embarrassment. You can die of exposure, you know?
That's what I always tell people when they offer me a gig for little or no money, they say" Well no money, but it's great exposure "
I say "Yes, and people die of exposure in the state"
Am I dreaming, or does that box of lollipops on the Lollyphile page really say "maple bacon"?
Mmm, doggy! Bacon pops. I'm there. Hot damn!
Ordered a box of that only last week...
I intend to make bacon toffee during my holiday too.
Drink up Nat, you rock and we love you.
Nathalie is a tremendous writer, well worth reading.... AND she is a talented photographer... always worth watching.
We are going to need a full report on these Maple Bacon Lillies. And the bacon toffee.
Who knew??????
Wait. Lillies are flowers. I meant Lollies.
Been kind of a long day already....
The bacon toffee is real enough. The recipe is there.
First time I did that I had a problem with the toffee part going all granular on me but I asked the guy and he said that if I added a little corn syrup (or golden syrup) it should turn out fine.
There is something about toffee flavours and bacon. A marriage made in heaven. In fact, the only time I had breakfast when I was in Nottingham I had French toast with crispy bacon and maple syrup. It was wonderful. I walked around with a big contented smile on my face for the remainder of the morning.
I have to say the toffee-bacon... um... does not sound terribly appetizing, to me at least.
btw Lorraine... the pic that your profile is currently using is a David photo... not a Kitty photo. You did a whole post on it. I believe that this photo belongs to your original "lorraine" profile since you changed it from your previous one when you did that post.
Glad Cabal had fun. You were a brave one with the mousie.
I'm going to get a new photo, and put it on all the Me's so that no matter who I am, I will look the same.
oh MAN - wish we *could* help out! be yr partners in fiddle, et al. alas we have yet to purchase a private jet for such purposes, so consider us there in proxy spirit.
xo
temim
What? No private jet? I would have sent mine for you, hee-hee...
Many thanks, Temin...
