Last FM and the Fair!

Let's talk about LastFm for a bit. I am still really new to it, and I thank the 12 of you who have become my friends, as I still don't know how to make more friends, tho some of you have TRIED to explain.

I can't seem to find the "Add as Friend" tab you all seem to have.

It gets a little weirder. My page is always different. And I am pretty sure I have only the one identity. Tho I was pretty sure I only had one on Blogger, and we all know that story.

When I click on someone ELSE, it will pop of their page and what they have been listening to all day, which I always thought was fun. On mine, today, I finally found that again, sort of. And sometimes it will only give me an option for "Your Library" and not "Your Neighbors" or "Your Recommendations". If I dig around a while, I can find them, but not always, and I like the My Recommendations listening thing.

Which also gets weird...This morning, it seemed to think that all I wanted to hear was music from Film scores, which I like ok, but wasn't the thing, and then it moved on to female pop, which I also liked. I had to go and find the Oyster Band, and play music LIKE the Oyster Band and rate the songs I like to get it back on track.

Of course, I just gave a Heart to the "Unicorn Song" Paul, I am SURE will have something to say about it. And Fod knows what Last FM will start thinking I like....

There is also a new (to me anyway) tab called "Paint It Black" I don't even want to GO there, as I am sure it will wipe me out of existence. It sounds fairly ominous doesn't it?

Anything anyone has to say on LastFM would be great. I want Hera to be my friend, and tried so hard to ask her....(And anyone else out there if you want to be my friend, I know how to ACCEPT your friendship, just not how to GET it)

This is getting surreal...

Great News! I got our Entry Tags for the X County Fair! Now we must select the most perfect jar of honey and comb and take them on in. Since I already showed you the most recent honey, here is an exciting photo of what Bee Hives look like on a Summer's afternoon....

Ok. So not so exciting. And since I neither got stung, nearly stung nor went in them, we can move on. Sure did smell wonderful down there tho, all like honey air, kind of...

I'll leave you with a picture of "First Time Dog Tries the New Bridge" The outcome was successful..

Hope your day was too!

Love and Music and Bees,
Lorraine

No clue about Last FM, sorry.

Nice pix. Have you got your camera working again?

At 7:03 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

I got a new one. Well, Boss got a new one, and gave me his. Sadly the day before he did, Small Got Who is Getting Big, dropped it down the staires.

Now I have a working camera, but I can't SEE what I am taking pictures of, hee-hee, no working screen.

Which actually might well be the best camera of all for someone like me....

Maybe we can add last fm and blogger identity to the agenda for hyperlink lessons day.

In the meantime... I just looked up Hera and it looks like she is only there (under the name Hera anyway) as an artist, not as a listener. I think the "add as friend" button only shows up for listeners. If you click randomly on someone listed as a listener on her overview page you may see the add as friend button under their photo.

It does seem to me that last.fm shows up differently for me depending on what computer I am on and how I get to my page. It is a bit of an odd site -- but I still like it.

If I have time I'll take some screen shots that might help you navigate it.

oh and aletamay = aleta. I finally made a blogger blog just to learn more about it as I support people who want to use it. I am AletaMay there. Feel free to check it out but there is not likely to be much of interest there -- although you never know!

At 8:16 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

AHA!!!! So that's how it works. Yes, you must come And give me lessons in all things computer, as soon as my computer at home is actually working right, and I have some TIME....

I will certainly check out Aletamay!

Sorry for any typos, but this computer is darn weird, now the Mousie works on the Macbook, but half the buttons don't, but I can use an external keyboard, tho the Mousie doesn't work on IT...

Good laughs!

Venus came in WET a few minutes ago. I do not want to know. Then, I swear this is true, she brought in a hand towel.

I dried her. What could I do? Danguy has that secret wall and all,I live to serve them.

Bengals, not Daguy. Just to be clear....

"Paint it Black" changes the color scheme of the page to black.

I'm absolutely no help with the rest because I haven't used it in ages and don't remember a lot of it!

At 8:32 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Hi Finchstalker, and welcome!!! You sound like a Birder...??

Changes it black? They have a tab or that??? I mean, cool, I love black, but there is a tab for it????

Good thing it won't delete me, and many thanks for the info!

At 9:30 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

Actually, the "Paint It Black" tab just changes the tool bar and titles black from red. I just tried it. The background is still a pale blue through.

Following on a discussion from the previous post, on Last.fm I've created a playlist that, as of now, is only one song. It is "Anger Takes the Wheel" by Cris Williamson off of her "Strange Paradise" album. Most of the lyrics are as follows:

"If you hate something
Chances are you fear it,
And Fear means forever
On the Wheel.

'Kill them with kindness,'
That's what Daddy said.
Don't it make you feel hard
When Anger takes the wheel.
Anger takes the wheel."

I don't know if you have to sign up with Last.fm to listen to my playlist or not, but it's worth a try. And yes, I'm Ariandalen there, too.

At 9:50 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Kati, that is the best. I can't listen to it on this computer but I am so going there with tea in the morning. So much hate is fear....And hate is no good, just means what you hate is stronger.

Very apt words....

Tho strange I can't get so many things on Last FM but they have a tab for that....

On an aside, Mim is the most seriously weird litter box gal ever, she just drove the thing three feet across the floor...

At 11:00 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Last time I checked, Lorraine you still did not have any playlist.
I like the new feature that allows you to make several (so I made one for French music and one for Italian).
Normally, when you access somebody's profile, you should see a big button saying something like "add friend".
I wish I could sit by you and show you. Ask some tutoring to the boss?

What is the new camera, then?

Once I am done moving in a few days and every non-work minute isn't spent packing, I'll try to write something up for Last.fm to demystify that. But basically, Last.fm makes better guesses about what you like the more you use it. I had installed the scrobbler part of it (the part that looks at what you're playing in iTunes), and let it run for a year before I got around to poking at Last.fm's recommendations feature. Which I then raved about on my blog.

That bridge looks really cool. What is it made out of? And how is it anchored? And I'm confident you'll do well with the honey in the Fair. ;)

My sepia-ink-in-the-cut has not gone away after washing dishes and a shower. I think I might just have given myself the world's lamest tattoo.

At 11:35 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

I had one like that (lame tattoo), many years ago, done with a fountain pen (at school). It lasted form many years but it's not there anymore, so I suppose it did get bored after a (long) while and buggered off.

At 5:53 AM , Blogger ivenotime said...

from bridges and honey and lastfm to tattoos which aren't quite like tatoos - i love this blog. i know nothing about lastfm. i tried it a few times but since its summer i am not at a computer much, and at school i don't have speakers (yet - i never brought any in cuz i thought there was no sound card but i found out there is - yey!) so i look forward to lessons and hints. twitter is a mystery too. good luck on the honey! that will be fun to take to the fair. and the bridge is pretty cool, was it hard to get cabal to try? my dogs will barely do a ramp let alone a swingy looking bridge. oh, and when is the fair? what day are you judged?

At 6:57 AM , Blogger Phiala said...

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting to scrobble my player, since I can only do it from home. How can the world know what odd musical taste I have unless I remember to upload my list???

Cabal did very well with that bridge! When Grendel was a pup, the obedience class teacher got the students to teach all the dogs how to do slides because there was a kid's park adjacent to the dog-training park. It took some work to get him to learn to climb the stairs side, because they're so steep (never tried one of the ladder ones, don't think quadrupeds can do that very well), but oh, the fun of going down! He would go down the slide over and over and over until he was too tired to walk! "Oh please mom, just one more. I can do it, really I can!" The dog approach seems to be half run, half slide, and fast!

He wore the face of his tags half off from landing in the sand at the bottom.

Unfortunately there isn't a conveniently-located slide where we live now, so it's been years since Grendel has gotten to play that game.

At 7:11 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

My cats manage very well the ladder which we have on the book shelves - both up and down - but if the bridge is moving a little it must be really weird both for Dog and humans.

LOL on the dog going down the slides at the park! It must have been like taking a kid to play.

At 8:54 AM , Blogger Dan Guy said...

The bridge is done? Swwweeet!

At 10:01 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Hans made the bridge, out of rope and wood. Cabal was not SURE he liked it, but quickly got used to it, tho he thinks it far more sensible to go thru the creek than over it.

I have no ladders for the Bengals, they do not need them. Mim came off the top of the cupboards in the sunroom last night and I have NO idea how she COULD have got there...

I have a lot more to say, but am swamped today, so I'll have to add it bits at a time....

At 10:04 AM , Blogger Rubius said...

Ah Mim, she is good at getting into those inaccessible places... but that is an impressive feat. Those cupboards are high.

The bridge looks nice and the hives look lovely. I am assuming the paint job is by Kim?

At 10:26 AM , Blogger ivenotime said...

I thought the right hive was by mimiko, and is the left one by kelli bickman? I have seen pics of both hives previously, but this is a different view. fun idea to have them painted by various artists. ahh, Lorraine, you and my daughter seem to share the same dilemma with cameras - she simply looks at it and something Bad happens, and she has extended this trait to include her cell phone as well. sigh. hope you have better luck than that!

At 10:36 AM , Blogger Rubius said...

Kelli.. yes... Kelli... that's who I meant.. jeez.

They are lovely.

At 3:28 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

The Hive on the left is by Kelli Bickman, the right is Mimko.

HEY! I am taking a break! My first today! I am done!

Well, ok, not DONE, but I think all the emergencies have been handled. Ack. A project I have been involved with and which is eating my everything all came crashing down, which oddly enough, may have solved all my problems and given me the time I need to uh, fix it.

Well, that made a lot of sense, hee-hee. Would be easier if I had a job I could talk about, now wouldn't it?

As to how Mim got down from the top of that thing, think CEILING here, if you haven't seen it (Hey I could take a picture, or try to!) She JUMPED, all they way down.

My camera us a Sony Cybershot. And it's great, except you can't see what you are taking a picture of. And someone stole my battery charger.

(WHERE does this camera Karma come from???)

Still have more to say, but need to cook the Dog a steak, so he has treats for Dog School tonight.

(Which out to be fun . Heh. It is HOT and HUMID.)

Oh, no time for Last FM'ing today, alas...When you are too busy to play music....

At 3:40 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Dude - leave some milk or scotch out for the Fey. That's all I've got to explain your bad camera juju. And shiny things. Leave shiny things out.

Enjoy your break and good luck at Dog School!

Starting tomorrow, I'll celebrate Lammas by playing a very big game of skill that I like to call Moving House. Oof.

At 3:48 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Moving House. Ugh. Tho I expect it will be great when you get it all done. Make the Dog help, and the cats!

How is you new Bad Tattoo doing? I really want a tattoo! All that hanging with Kitty I expect. It the WHAT that is difficult. I wanted on when I was 20, and I am sure glad now that I don't have what I wanted then, if you see what I mean....

At 3:53 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

My bad tattoo is doing fine, if a little red around the edges. I should take a picture of it. :) It looks a little different than my other two, but that's okay.

Coming up with a design is hard to do, that's for sure. And it's not really something anyone else can do for you, which is both good and bad. Kitty has awesome tattoos -- I will someday have sleeves like hers.

At 6:43 PM , Blogger Erin Underwood said...

Thanks for the heads up on Last FM. I was looking for a new music site. I used to use Yahoo music because it gave you a lot more control over the content, but that's changed. Now, you get what they want you to hear and they let you think that you're controlling the tunes.

Anyway, Last FM looks great. I'll start using it tomorrow and see how thing go. I have pretty wide musical tastes, which generally make for a mish-mash of music on these types of sites. However, I have high hopes and you know I'm going to "paint it black." Oh, yeah.

How ironic. I've been listening to an old CD that I found and it has the song "Paint it Black" on it. And, yes, I've been hitting the "repeat" button a little too often when I get to the end of the song. In any case, I love that Last FM has the "paint it black" option because I'm in a very "paint it black" kind of mood right now.

By the way, I can't believe that Cabal went across the bridge. That dog has no fear.

At 7:09 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Kitty has the BEST tattoos! You are right there...

Hi Erin, do give it a try, there is SO much music there, I've found so many new bands that I like. I really want to create a playlist, and then I think people can listen to it.

And oh, yes, I am going to paint it back too!

Dog Agility is BRUTAL when it is 87 and humid. And one is not thinking enough and wears black pants and shirt. He is sacked out and I am shortly to be.

Great workout tho, I'll say that for it. I'm shedding pounds like fleas off a dog. (ok, and suffering from heatstroke to have just said that, hee-hee) I am going to try and take pics of him on his own personal agility course.

I think the agility is one reason he does not fear the Bridge. He probably thinks "Oh, great, one more thing to go over, wonder if I get steak at the end?"

Don't worry, Aleta, I need you. Badly!!!!!

I know SO little about computers....

At 8:02 PM , Blogger AletaMay said...

Well I really do love to be needed but I also really love to see someone learn to do something new even if I don't have anything to do with it!

So Hurray! on both counts!

At 8:10 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Well, to be truthful you inspired me to believe I could learn how to do it.

I went to a blank blogger and created a link, and studied it, in HTML and them did a couple more and all of a sudden, the light bulb went on....It's like a sentence.....

At 8:19 PM , Blogger AletaMay said...

It is very like a sentence!

It is very fun and wonderful to see all the different ways people make sense of things.

At 9:34 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Making sense of things..I didn't mention that Cabal had a WAY easier time on the bridge than I did, he was cool, I was WHOA I am so going into the water!! Hans still needs to do a couple things before it is done done. It's kind of tippy yet...

At 9:43 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Quiche, you made a link! I'm so proud of you! See? I knew you would get the hang of it. :) Soon you won't need Lessons when you're out here next and we will just have to go hunting for cool gothy tribal things. Oh no. Oh the horror. Please, anything but that.

Dog's contribution to moving so far seems to be inspecting the boxes I pack and scruffing the cat when the cat looks like she's going to dive in and hide somewhere. They are both really anxious because they have never been through a move before and seem to think I'm packing for a trip. Who knew I had so many coffee cups? And why do only the lids to Tupperware breed?

At 9:51 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Tuperware DOES that and the mystery is Where do the odd bits GO???? Kind of like pens...

Yes, we will go find cool gothy tribal things when I come back next, do you know where to look for such things? We don't have much here, and I have always wanted to find a club that felt like me...Everyone plays in LA, I haven't been to see a great band in yonks, I am always gigging....

Amanda Palmer is coming your way, maybe I should come out for that.

(she says, wanting a Holiday)

At 10:45 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Hyperlinks! Wow! You've learned a brand new language.

Dog would have a easier time on the bridge because he's got a lower centre of gravity and four legs for support.

Doggie icecream? I still would have thought eating things that are too cold would not be good for an animal stomach (it isn't all that good for ours, so...)

At 10:51 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Good morning Nathilie, thought you might be up soon, I am currently drinking your tea...Going off to sleep shortly..

I did get a new skill an am right proud of it! Who knew???

The Bengals have gone nuts, I am thinking it must be your tea....Wish you were here to take pics....

At 10:57 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

I'll have to research the herb then.
Maybe it IS in the catnip family and my cats aren't reacting to it because they have the fresh stuff all over the garden.

About your camera and the lack of LCD display to see where you shoot: Do you find a difference between the view in the viewfinder and the end result? I have noticed a slight difference on the Olympus I use while diving.

At 11:09 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Yes do find out about this herb, Venus went nuts for half an hour and is now lying all over me demanding afeecation , very unlike her,,,

No view on the camera, only a screen view, very odd.....

At 11:10 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Re: Verbena vs Catnip
They are distant cousins (belong to the same order of the Lamiales - different families though).
I found some very neat stuff on the tiny entry that wiki has for Verbena officinalis:
"In northern Europe it was regarded as a sacred herb, used in sacred ointments to cleanse and defend against demonic illness."
Maybe the kitties - being little devils - are resenting this?

Also:
"According to the William Faulkner short story "An Odor of Verbena", Verbena is the only scent that can be smelled above the scent of horses and courage."
Which is why I thought the package might get stopped at the border - being so fragrant.

Good night!

At 11:19 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

No view finder on that camera? That IS odd...

Oh and verbena is also supposed to help poets and writers!

At 11:31 PM , Blogger Rubius said...

Hey... I have Verbena growing. Who knew it could be a tea. It does smell lovely. My mom brought me dried catnip last time she was here but my cat seems to disdain it... she would rather have the stuff from the store.

Congrats on learning to hyperlink. Glad to hear you have fun at the agility classes. I agree with Nat.... that is weird about the lack of a small viewfinder.

I got myself a new toy today. It's a tablet (a writing/drawing pad and pen for my computer). I thought I would try out a small/inexpensive one to see if I liked it... and I do!! I have wanted one since I first heard they were available, years ago.

Panta, you're moving? In this weather? Dude. Drink lots of water.
You're right about those pesky Tupperware lids. I think the darkness of the drawer encourages their breeding like bunnies.

Lorraine you made a linkie! Awesome.:)
You really should go see Amanda..she's really great. I really wish she and Brian would come back to Indiana by themselves.

Rubius do tell us about your adventures with your shiny new tablet.:) I could so waste hours in front of the computer with one.

Lorraine made a link! Go you. Next thing you know you'll be hacking the Gibson.

At 4:58 AM , Blogger Dread Val said...

Kali -- What? This weather is great! It's only in the low 90s, nice and perfect. No, seriously -- if the temperature's below 90, then all of my old injuries from sports are cranky. (A hazard of being an overweight and old ex-athlete who was dumb when younger and played while hurt. Perpetually.) I grew up here, in the more desert-bordering parts of LA; at 100° I think, 'Hmm, maybe I should put on shorts...' So no, I'm thrilled!

Rubius, what kind of tablet? I love my big Intuous, though I covet a Cintiq in the worst way. If you happen to have an Intuous, by the way, put that pen on a leash and strap it to yourself, as Wacom wants $70 for a new one, it's not to be found in any retail stores, and you will, without fail, misplace it as a deadline looms. Not that I would, uh, know anything about that myself. Ahem. But show us what you're drawing with it!

Quiche, I do indeed know some places, though they're a bit more 'tribal' than 'goth' depending on which week you catch them. That's okay, though, they'll still be fun. I've never listened to Amanda Palmer, but I'll give her a go. When is she out here? And yes, you should come visit when she is! (Well, just come back and visit anyway!)

And now I should make coffee and resume packing up the kitchen. Unless I can think of something else to comment on...

Damn.

More packing it is. Sigh.

At 8:16 AM , Blogger Rubius said...

What sports did you play Panta? Good luck on the move. Moving can be painful and distressing but I find there is such a feeling of relief when it is over. Wish I could be there to help out.

I REALLY wanted a big Intuous and I had been humming and hawing over this purchase since April (when I started looking into these things seriously) but I am not doing anything professional with it and I thought that dropping $500 on a toy might not be wise. I decided that I should just get a small/inexpensive one to see if I liked it at all or would even use it. I was planning to pick up a small wacom brand tablet when I went to the store yesterday but the Genius tablet was twice the size for half the price. That's not always a good thing, I know, but the Genius seemed to have more sensitivity than the small wacoms and I had been concerned about the tiny drawing space on the wacoms so I thought I would try it out. It's not bad but the sensitivity in the software I am using doesn't seem to match the sensitivity when I test it in the tablet test screen. It is fun.

Wow you guys have tupperware lids breeding? That's great because my lids have almost died out ... and my containers are breeding, without the lids. hmmm. must be the air.

At 9:15 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Good Morning , everyone! (I've been up for quite a while but put silly business before you, won't happen again )

Verbena! That's it! Love the stuff. And that explains a lot , why it makes Venus so nuts. Of course she IS nuts, so we can't be sure. Poets and writes, eh? Must drink more...

Yeah, no viewfinder, only the screen, weird, eh? And the screen is gone.

I am not getting in on this PEN thing. I just learned to Hyperlink. I don't even know what this is...

Hacking the Gibson??????? I will if you want me to , but what is it?

Good luck moving, Val! Only 90? We are in the upper 80's still really humid. I had a weird dream about Gayle, she turned into Meryle Streep. Where did that come from?

At 9:46 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

I have a Bamboo tablet (from Wacom) and it's really great.

A blind camera! Only one eye, like a cyclop, and that one blind. Weirs. And taking pictures is just guess work... You could start a trend there (after camera tossing, camera blinding).

You guys should plant Lemon Balm in the garden: It attracts bees and has some nice soothing properties as well.

Wanted to say: I am off tomorrow to Nottingham for a few days so won't comment (unless I get bored and end up in a Internet cafe).
Going to see Eddie Campbell (all excited fan girl here).

At 9:51 AM , Blogger Rubius said...

Have fun Nat!!!

for those who have a tablet... do you find the sensitivity different depending on which program you are using?

I have to reinstall Photoshop and try the tablet out with it to see if it works better than the Corel Paint trial that came with it.

If it doesn't I may just take it back and see if I can upgrade.

At 9:53 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Eddi Campbell is wonderful, have a great time!

Lemon Balm is a fine idea, might be too late in the year now, but I can get some in the spring. I am going lilac shopping next week, apparently, according to the Master Gardener on our block, they are very cheap now, as no one wants to buy them. I want them everywhere!

Iris too.

What do you all do with these tablets?

My Panasonic Lumix doesn't have a viewfinder. It just has a screen on the back. It also has a 10X optical zoom. :)

Val, have you tried taking a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement? It has really helped me. I fell on my knees and hands three years ago. Had visible bruises on the heel of my palms for a week and on my knees for a month. It took a couple of years before I could cross my legs without worrying about my knees locking, and I'm still not sure how I avoiding breaking one or both knees. I never stopped dancing, though that was only once a week.

Thank you for the link, Ms. Fabulous! We all knew you could do it! :)

At 9:56 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Must make more links...

But to where????

At 10:15 AM , Blogger ariandalen said...

You'll find places. ;)

We had a low last night/this morning of 80. Our high is projected to be 102 at around 4:00 PM today. Waco had a thunderstorm last night, but it didn't make it to my house about 20 miles south. :( We're under a heat advisory and burn ban. The humidity at 6:30 AM this morning was around 80%, but it's now around 50%. The heat is on! Even the Fae don't want to do much.

I could not possibly offer advice about the Last FM thing, but I do know that "Paint It Black" is a song.

While I'm here, I have a question for those of you who asked me about home-schooling: I realize that blog entry is way overdue, but that is partly because I am not sure which questions to answer. I wonder what exactly you would like to know? Of course, I'll be answering the questions I get most often anyway ....

Lorraine, I'm sorry for the change of subject -- it's just that all the people who were wondering asked on this blog, so it was the best place to bring it up!

You can use the tablets to draw, cut out odd shapes and things in Photoshop, sign things, add doodles to photos, etc.... but mostly (for me) drawing and colouring things. Panta, as a working artist, probably uses hers for work purposes.

The pen lets you draw things in detail... and it is much easier than using a mouse to draw with. There are all sorts of pen-nibs, like calligraphy, acrylic brushes, watercolour brushes, oil brushes, pencils, crayons, etc. It lets you add texture to digital drawings.

If you have a nice fancy Intuous or the lovely Cintiq (that I also covet but simply cannot justify) then your paint brush can draw on a tilt as if it was a real paint brush.

I was wondering if your technology loving boss had ever had one but I guess, if you don't know them, then he probably doesn't have one. Though... I am not sure what he would use it for.

At 10:22 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Panta: I'm a dork, I forgot you're in CA where there's dry heat;-P The humidity here is so insane it's screwing up my thinking.

Lorraine, these tablets are electronic toys for your computer that enable you to "draw" directly to your computer. No more scanning, and lots of creative options. The pens are the drawing instruments for the tablets. Does that help?

I know I had my TabletPC out at various points, Quiche. It's the same concept, only rather than having a seperate tablet peripheral that you plug into your computer, a TabletPC has it built in so that you can draw directly on the screen.

I love TabletPCs for sitting on the couch without a keyboard, plinking around the web or reading e-books.

It's way too hot here too. Just the trip from the car to the front door makes me feel like I could melt.

I looked at that type of technology too, Dan. It didn't quite fit in my budget and the tablet quality and sensitivity was on par with the simpler tablets, not any better... but writing on the screen itself was pretty nice. Basically that wouldn't be any better for drawing purposes, for me anyway, and what was available was like buying a new computer instead of just a tool for my existing one.

The pen also works kind of like a mouse so you can tap it on things instead of clicking on things and browse the net, etc. You are just holding a pen instead of a mouse.

Different models offer differing levels of sensitivity. Many of the early TabletPCs had passive digitizers -- basically they were no better than touchscreens that you could touch with a stylus to ink with very little depth-of-press. That didn't sit so well with the artists, so most these days use active Wacom digitizers.

There are a lot of artists working on TabletPCs these days. The Penny Arcade guy occasionally posts amazing pencil sketch roughs that look indistinguishable from real pencil and paper drawings.

Ah, I get it. I think Malena's husband sometimes uses one, but I never asked him in detail about it. Not sure what Boss or I would do with one. (Tho it sounds really fun!)

Emily, you can always change or add subjects, not to worry, we go everywhere here. I've just often wondered what it would be like being home schooled, if you pick your own subjects, or how much time you spend, if you feel like you're missing being around a lot of other kids, sports, just those sorts of things.

I just spoke to someone in the Midlands in the UK who said it was beyond hot, and every half an hour they are getting torrential downpours. We need rain here SO badly.

And I spoke to someone in Maine who said it was cold and foggy and she was watching seals.

Kati, be careful, that is WAY beyond hot.

Cars are the worst, I can't take the dog on errands as even 10 minutes in a car with windows open is too much.

Cleaning out the freezer. Just found a dead bird in a bag. Not the eating kind. The kind with feathers. Must speak to the Birdchick about this.

We have rain and cloudy skies. I turned off my music so I could listen to the rain. Lovely. Although I have my umbrella today I didn't use it as it was nicer to walk through the drizzle to work.

Emily - how much time do you spend on each subject? How many subjects? Do you have a set curriculum?

Not to worry. I stay inside, but now you understand why it's a far more pleasant walk at 6:30ish in the morning than 8:00ish at night. Yesterday (Thursday) morning the radar showed rain where I live, and you could see drops had fallen on the cars, patio furniture, and grill, but it evaporated before it hit the ground. I even felt it lightly on my head and shoulders, but the streets and ground were dry. I'm not sure we've even gotten so much as an inch of rain in the past 2 months combined. At least we had rain the first part of the year.

I don't take our dog with us anywhere, but I do have my two daughters, 6 and 4. I have to take them with me if I leave the house, and then we all have to get out of the car at any stop. At least school starts back up in three weeks. Then I get to find out if I can teach a belly dance class with the 4 year old in tow. Yeah. This is the one that's a pixie...when she's not an imp.

Always a challenge with little ones! Good luck teaching bellydancing - I'm sure it will all go well - too bad I don't live in your area, I'd take the class, tho i am not flexible at all around the middle. could never hula hoop. It's hot here too, but far more bearable that what you are all experiencing tho we could use some rain too. Spacedlaw, have fun seeing Eddie Campbell - what a treat, and Natalie, best of luck with the move, hope all goes well. My daughter uses a wacom tablet as part of her graphic design coursework - they are quite cool, tho I must admit to lusting over a tablet pc (dan you have all the cool stuff!)

Ok, I agree about the 6AM thing, and see your point!

I have been really bad about bellydancing class, sadly....I am hoping to get back soon.

Now I kind of want to try this toy...

I'd send you one of my spare tablets, but I'm afraid you'd hit the wrong key combination and Windows would try to eat you.

Next time I'm out that way I'll bring you one to play with. (And lock out those Lorraine clones.)

You know, you are most likely right, Windows might well try and eat me. And that would be something as I only use a Mac, can't understand Windows for the life of me.

Who would want to ?

(She says, deliberately opening a can worms, hee-hee)

Actually the windows/mac debate was wandering through my head today.

I say PC. Why? Because I can DO more with my PCs.

Macs - twice the price, 1/2 the programs... but it comes with most of what you need ready to plug and play. But when you can't make a program work you will find NOT ONE PERSON able to help you.

PCs/Windows - half the price, errors are annoying as hell, extra complicated, mountains of programs and games,... but you may have to purchase the programs separately. But when you can't make a program work at least the techy world can still fix the problems.... but when they break, they break with great thoroughness.

Still... I only have PCs at home... as I could never afford a Mac. Also all those web gimicks out there seem to work better on my PCs than on the Macs I use at work. When MSN's Office Suite for Macs breaks at work it is EXTREMELY annoying because no one can help you.

What? Macs don't break!

I a pancomputer.

I have only ever loved PCs but I've played around with Macs and I think they are really pretty. I really like Macs for certain tasks and if that is what is available to work with I use them happily.

I'm interested in other platforms too. Why close any doors?

What really matters to me is that the computer I am working with at any given time is awake and paying attention to my needs.

I like your attitude, I should not have dissed PC's, if only in fun.

My bad.

I think I have been in the heat too long...
