Now we know.....

I went back to the Fair after work to see if I could find out what this mysterious Penguin was all about and what on earth the class it won a ribbon for could have BEEN.

Ah yes of course. It has won a ribbon for "Best Decorated Vegetable." Well, that certainly clears up a lot of nagging questions. Except for perhaps what sort of vegetable it , er, WAS.

Here is the Arrangement that got the Grand Best of All Ribbon...

Aren't two of those, that's for sure....

I met the best band today. Well, not met exactly, but the drummer, Temim, from the Shondes, dropped me a note to chat about music and Bengals, and to let me know they would be in Minneapolis September 14th. After hopping on my newly upgraded to subscriber status LastFM, and listening for a while, I wrote back and by the end of the day we were fast friends.

They are completely their own sound (my favorite kind of music) sort of a mix between post-punk, classical and Jewish music. Kind of. We are doing some cd swapping, and I can't wait to hear the rest of their music. They have an energy I can really get behind. And Fod's own gift to fiddlers on the violin.

Keep your fingers crossed, I may have found a home for Ginger and Sabrina! THANK YOU again, everyone for all your love and support in helping me. I had 5 inquiries and offers, the only problem with each of them being the travel distance.

Hopefully they will be with their new friend soon...

Love and music,
Lorraine

I'm guessing that penguin used to be a gourd of some kind. I hope.

Wow, that arrangement is..interesting. Yeesh. I'm trying to figure out just what the frog brings to it, but can't think of anything.

I'll have to give this new band a listen..sounds interesting.:)

And new homes for the babies is GOOD news.

NEON frog, and it didn't make any sense up close either, I'll say that for it.

It was the sort of thing that had it been done by a five year old in kindergarten and proudly brought home, would have filled me with delight. As it is, I am vaguely puzzled...

I am SO growing gourds next year!

Yes, listen to them, they will make you happy.

That penguin does look like it was made from a butternut pumpkin.

At 7:40 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Hi Dean, welcome! Aren't those the ones that people make turkeys from? I'm not saying you're wrong, I have no idea what it is....

Spacelaw is going to love waking up to this....

At 8:37 PM , Blogger Rubius said...

Fingers crossed for you.

That penguin is so weird. I don't get the flower arrangement... or the frog. I'm puzzled too.

All this talk of honey and I had none in the house... so I picked some local honey up today so I wouldn't feel left out.

Good news about the kitties!
I hope this will come through.

(Good morning :) all)
So that penguin is a veggie in disguise, eh? Some type of gourd possibly indeed - if it has got the right shape. Or an eggplant. Cool.
But that arrangement! Meh. I used to do better things as a 10 years old, decorating the common rooms at my holiday camps (we had a very nice ikebana book at home and my mom and I always tried new stuff).
Bah.
I think it must have been the frog.
The jury has a frog fetish.

New music?
Shall go and listen to them on last.fm then...

At 11:53 PM , Blogger Dread Val said...

That arrangement is a bit... twee. Vegetable decorating -- why do I have a sinking feeling that if I only Google that, I will find entire communities devoted to decorating vegetables? And worse, ones that fall subject to the great Internet Law that any random thing you can think of has a website devoted to the combination of it and sex. Probably one out there for sex involving that arrangement, somehow, too. Might explain the frog, anyway.

Very good news about the Bengals! Fingers crossed!

Now It Can Be Told!

Decorating vegetables sounds vaguely... unsavory.

I hope one of the placements works out for the Jungle Loves!

At 4:58 AM , Blogger Jess said...

Listening to the Shondes right now-- they're pretty cool!

I was about to vote eggplant, but I think dean's right-- butternut squash. Painted black. Mmmtasty.

Here you go, Pantagruel. Not all that sexy, though the avocado pig has something of a come-hither look about it.

I Gooooooogle veggies... Nah. Doesn't scan nearly as well.

That orange is great!
It would be a shame to eat it.

At 6:20 AM , Blogger ivenotime said...

snort, snicker, how true Val, how true, very funny post. will have to give the band a listen when i can get on a computer that has sound, since my powerbook has decided, on its own, to not allow any. bah.

At 7:02 AM , Blogger gaypet said...

I am so glad to hear about the Bengals! I hope it works out. I'm sure we could get a caravan together if you need to drive them a distance. The Bengal rescue has probably told you this but it is not unusual for rescue groups to work together and check out possible homes for long distance placement. Say, if you find a home for them in Florida, a Florida rescue group can do a home visit and let you know what they think.

Can't wait to listen to the band!

And yes Val, decorated Veg certainly has a fetishy ring to it. :)

Great gaping gourds, Batman!!!

At 9:33 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Morning all,

It can't be eggplant, it was definitely hard. Butternut squash maybe.

I so googled Vegetable Decorating too. Weird. Something not, quite, right......But I am laughing at the thoughts popping up...If one is going for a strange fetish tho, this would surely be it.

Keep fingers crossed, hoping to hear today about the Fosters. Gayle, would love to have company for the jaunt. The one we are hoping for would involve about a three hour drive, just right for a day trip.

Glad you like the Shondes, I can't wait to see them live. HEY! Me. going out? To hear a band? Have some fun? When the heck was the last time that happened?????

At 9:43 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

They sound quite nice, actually.
Have a great time playing, tonight.

At 9:57 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

That's right! I am playing tonight! I can't wait, I am so ready. I haven't had two weekends in a row off in a couple years, and it's really time to get back.

Tho it is kind of funny to think of three hours of high energy playing as getting to spend a relaxing evening....

At 10:50 AM , Blogger gaypet said...

Break-a-leg tonight! I have no $ and no sitter but I will be with you in spirit. Haunting. :D I will be staying home and making Blintzes with Micah. Yeah, Blintzes!

I would love a day trip! I'll pack sandwiches.

At 10:54 AM , Blogger EmilyLady said...

My brother likes to make penguins out of napkins, and, being the crafty vegetarian he is, it's really only a matter of time before he learns how to make penguins out of vegetables.

Congratulations on (fingers crossed) finding a home for the Bengals! I hope this works out.

~Emily

At 11:32 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Gayle, sorry you can't come down, would have loved to see you! Blinzes????

Emily, your brother makes penguins out of napkins??? But of course...

At 11:36 AM , Blogger AletaMay said...

Wow. Some of those veggie carvings are... amazing.

Shondes -- listening now. I like them.

Hope the new cat home works out!

I'm looking forward to Charlie's tonight. Laser Lady (who, I understand, would like to be called Laser Baroness from now on)and her gentleman friend will be there too! Wee!

At 11:41 AM , Blogger EmilyLady said...

Yes ... we call him "special". He also loves to knit, but I don't think he's ever knitted a penguin. (But he's done crosses, change purses, American flag pins, fingerless gloves, mittens, and many scarves. He is currently working on a teddy bear so I suppose it's only a matter of time.)

Lorraine, yesterday I had a friend ask me what kind of music I liked. I told her, "A little bit of everything" and said that the CD I had sitting in my player right then was one of folk music -- namely, yours. She said she liked folk so I put it on for her ... and she absolutely loved it! I was thrilled.

~Emily

At 11:44 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

That's so cool Emily, both about the music and your brother, he sounds as cool as you. Glad your friend liked the music!

I am working on a last FM playlist, but I am not sure if I am doing it right or not, we shall see....

Aleta, looking forward to seeing you and the Laser Baroness tonight! We will rock you.

Did I tell you all that I took a caterpillar to the bank, post office and grocery store yesterday? I got back, and there it was on my shoe, riding along. I took lovely pics, but apparently when you don't have the memory card in your camera, it doesn't work...

At 12:03 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Hey, even caterpillars like to see the world...

At 12:04 PM , Blogger gaypet said...

Blintzes are yummy cheese and crepe goodness. I make a bunch and freeze them, frying in butter when needed.

At 12:08 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Aaaah Blinis!
Nice.
I usually make them to eat with smoked salmon or fish roe, so do not normally add cheese or other things in them.
I always end up freezing some as well as the minimum quantities are still way to much for two persons.
In many ways, the basic recipe is very close to the American pancake.

At 12:38 PM , Blogger gaypet said...

Well, Blintzes are a typically American Jewish food brought from eastern Europe. They are a pancake (crepe) with a filling of cream cheese, eggs, etc. They are often served with jam and sour cream. My son is very picky but he loves them.

At 1:39 PM , Blogger merryhousekeeper said...

Kudos to your kitties! I truly hope they get a new home. The fair is truly a wonerous place.
Okay, totally off the blog.. (with permission) I am starting my own cleaning business! MERRY-HOUSEKEEPERS!! (thanks to fablo for the name, hehe)
I cannot find ANY clip art that says "Merry-housekeepers," I am truly desperate, could any of you possibly help? I have been doing my homework and research on the competition, (not much here) I Know this can be great. But I do need some artistic talent which I lack. I found a few corny drawings of stick people with brooms and a dancing broom.... um, not me, us. I want to say, I want to clean your mess and will Love doing it, and be the BEST, LOL, I know Im probably asking for alot, but I KNOW you all have talent and Lorraine said I could ask. Thank you in advance, and thank you fablo & Malena for letting me make a personal note..
Oh, to contact me, edge7@charter.net

Yes, I did tell Merryhousekeeper to ask you all, she is stymied here, and I told her that as a group, you lot were amazing and could find a lost earring in Paris if you put your minds to it!

Best of luck!

At 10:00 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

And a good morning! (or good night as it were)
How was the gig?

At 10:57 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Morning, Spacelaw, I was hoping you would be up!

The gig was good. Aleta, Librarian Rachel, Laser Baroness and her husband all came down, plus another could whose names I can't remember that I quite like, and we had fun, but there was also an event going on in the ballroom, and those people weren't so fun, not interested in music, at all.

The nice couple asked the, er, subtly, to leave, so they could hear the music, and they cleared out. Then it got fun...

We had a lot of people show up for third set, which is only a half an hour, I wished they had come earlier, they wanted us to stay and play, but declined to throw 20's which is what it takes for me to stay over, hee-hee...

Did a GREAT "Running to Stand Still, by U2, made my night.

We watched the opening ceremonies on the TV's,, nice change from football. We got to see Ireland walk by, Bush looking bored, and the US team ( what is UP with those OUTFITS????) Kind of a frat boy boating outfit look. I shudder.

A fine night.

At 11:23 PM , Blogger AletaMay said...

It was a great night -- even with the name tag people.

Oh and don't forget the laser show!

Lorraine, watching you do Running to Stand Still is a religious experience. Seriously.

At 11:38 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

My thanks! It feels like that for me too, that song is special....I play the whole song one handed until the lead at the end, which feels like pouring the universe thru my soul...

We did overcome the name tag people!

And yes! The laser show! I did forget, the Laser Baroness brought a truly funky laser that shot multiple lasers all over the place. Pink FLoyd, eat your heart out!

At 12:03 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Weee! Special effects!
Next: smoke machine.
Now I wish I could have heard that U2 song (grumble).

At 12:08 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

We have one on tape. I keep thinking I should put up the three nights we recorded for the live cd somewhere and let all of you listen to them and pick the tracks for us...I just don't seem to have the time to go thru them.

They are raw live tracks tho, and a complete show, so I am not sure how it would work, but someone needs to if this cd is going to happen...

At 12:15 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

That would be brilliant!
Although we might well end up selecting different tracks...

At 12:17 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Ah yes, there is that..

I keep thinking we should offer a download version of the cd, take what you like sort of thing, build you own cd....It makes sense.

It's nice to have a CD to sell, but I keep thinking of the whole internet version thing...

At 12:19 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Well you can purchase just one track on Last.fm, so that could be easily done (or rather: it could be done - not sure about easily).

At 12:30 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Yes, true. We need Evil Genius Danguy in n this..

Starting to think sleep is possible, my mind is wandering in six directions, ad I am doing Bee Things with the Birdchick in the morning, and another show tomorrow night...

Have a fine day, while I have a sleeping night.....

glad your show went well, and i sure wish i could've been there too! was a very quiet night here - one daughter not feeling well, the other dealing with a major heartbreak :(, so tough to stand by and feel helpless. The cats are suffering much during the night: we can sleep with the ceiling fan on but they are scared of fans and there is no air co in their bedroom (I really must get some installed).

At 8:47 AM , Blogger gaypet said...

Afraid of the fan? Oh dear! We slept with the fan on last night. We have AC but it really only keeps cold the parts of the house we don't use much. So it's not much help.

At 10:46 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

AC is like that, keeps the parts of the house one does not use very cold. Hot here, the bee suit is brutal, been to one hive, two more to go, water break....

impressive indeed! wow, emily, I echo Lorraine's sentiments. Hope everyone gets some relief from the heat - we've been ok, high 70's, breezy, on and off storms - not too bad (so everyone come visit me :)

The weather has been wonderful here in Rhode Island except for a lot of thunderstorms. Lorraine, I know you love thunderstorms, but we get them at least once a week this time of year! But when it's not thundering, it's clear and gentle, and, thankfully, not as humid as it was in July. I like the heat but not the humidity.

We need some rain!!!!! It is said that the Indian rain dances used to work because they would keep dancing until it rained....

Which I kind of like as a philosophy for life.

At 4:31 PM , Blogger gaypet said...

Keep dancing until you get what you need! By all means! Not quite that simple, I know, but I do like the idea.

I look forward to reading about home schooling. At the moment Micah and I are going to make another bracelet for him. He really loves jewelry and likes to help make it. Pink, orange, and blue beads along with silver letters to spell his name! :D

At 5:12 PM , Blogger ivenotime said...

How cool Gaypet, what a fun way to spend some time! And Aletamay, and Emily - talk about your six degrees of separation - what a neat coincedence (sp?) oh well, have a good gig Lorraine, hope the bee suits didn't get too brutal.

At 11:02 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

The bee suits were brutal, very hot. Not to start any Bee fantasies, but let me tell you how very much The Birdchick and I don't wear with them in the summer....

The gig was good, in many ways, and in other ways, very much like work. Still fun was had, and a lot of people are happy...

Tomorrow, playing with Bedlam at the Brookside. I think, as it is outside, it will be a "Take your dog to work day" Ought to be a fine day. And I'll have pictures, both of this weekend and tomorrow, for you, including, ladies, Dr Score on his bike....

At 11:25 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

New posts!

Hem.

Good morning and evening (and everything in between too).

At 11:33 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Good morning to you too! Or evening, for me....

Yes, I am sure there will be adventures and pictures tomorrow evening. There's a gig, and I pick up the honey from the fair WITH it''s blue ribbon, and Dog is going to his first concert...

Hopefully he will consent to sit in the audience while I play, but one never knows, he may end up with stage time.

All was well, by the way, with the bees today. Thy seem to be doing everything one could wish of them, and are finally starting to build in the rounds...

At 11:36 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

HEY!!!!! My picture changed!!!!! How does this happen?? I sure didn't change it! I had meant to, I like this one better, looks more like me these days, as it is me these days, and it's a Kitty shot, which I like.

(well the other is too, and I like it, but I look different now..)

How could it have changed????

I am thinking Bengal-Bee alliance here....

At 11:40 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Selected another you in the list of yous who are allowed to contribute to the blog?

I can just see Cabal dancing on the stage and stealing the show...
He's a heart breaker that one.

At 11:47 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

It's weird having these other Me's..I mean, where did they come from? I wish I was one person..

(dancing for rain, until it rains....)

AH well...Perhaps I should get Cabal on stage, it's a well known fact that children and animals totally steal the show..

It will be fun tomorrow, as I am Special Guest, and can play as much or as little as I like. (tho I suspect I will play a lot, those guys are some FUN, and Johnny is a genius at getting people to take over, am sure there will be LOTS of Paul and Lorraine, and full on Big Band jamming...)

At 11:57 PM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Crude question warning:
Do you still get paid for the gig - even if you are a guest?

I should try to dance until rain comes but I am scared of tiring myself uselessly. The barometer has been promising rain for the past two days but it's a big liar...
The only wetness that might result of my dancing is profuse sweat. Not sure how much is that worth to water the garden.

At 12:06 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Depends on the gig, this one is Johnny's fiancé's Birthday party, so no $$ but plenty of fun, and I suspect my tab will be picked up by the owner for lunch and drinks...(not that soda water costs a lot)

They may offer, for courtesy, but I would decline anything else. Sometimes it is a good thing to do something nice for friends..We all sort of support of eachother.

Dance for the fun of it, it may not rain, but your garden will love it.

At 12:43 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

So much catching up to do in only a day!

Quiche, good for you for defeating the name tag people, enduring the bee suit, and letting caterpillars ride around on your shoe. Your gigs this weekend sound like they were a lot of fun. Yes, please post the pictures!

Emily and Aleta, that's great that you know someone in common. I would say it's funny, except it's not surprising at all, somehow. ;)

I finally have all my things out of the old place. This is the last time I move myself; between culling, packing, and moving, it took me three weeks to do. I have added to my bruise collection and I might have to buy stock in the makers of arnica gel. Many minor mishaps which don't quite constitute Adventures happened. I will miss the old place; 13 years somewhere is a long time.

More importantly, there is a wasps' nest outside my front door. I wonder who put it there... *coughs Dan Guy* So now there are Spies.

At 7:58 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

And now comes the unpacking. No wonder there are SPIES...

Gayle -- Congratulations! School is so different when one is a grown up! I love the way that happens!

Lorraine -- Perfect day for the Brookside. Darn. I'd love to hang out with Dog. Alas. Don't think there are enough hours in the day for a trip to the borderlands.

pantagruel -- Yeah. These connections are becoming less and less surprising to me the more they happen. My theory on moving is that everything sucks except unpacking which is like Christmas or your Birthday. Everything that survives the move is a gift.

So glad the bees are all doing what they should do.

At 9:02 AM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

Hurrah for Gayle and the Math! I'm going back to school this fall myself, I am developing a theory about the best way to actually learn French, involving, say, taking a class in it, as opposed to watching Underworld in French with French subtitles...

(tho I doubt they will teach me to say "Die, Werewolf Scum" which put Underworld slightly ahead in my book)

Wasps, Val? Spies, without a doubt! I have no affinity for them, unlike bees. They build on my house, they die.

Aleta, would have loved to see you out there, but I do understand...

I am going for a nap, had an airport run that was WAY too early, and I am thinking 4 hours of sleep is not going to cut it. It's a lovely day tho, and I am looking forward to the afternoon.

Hope your Sundays are as fine!

I know this is a little behind, but I told you the penguin was a painted gourd. My guess is a birdhouse gourd. The only reason I can see that it would be in Horticulture is if the entrant grew the gourd him/herself. Otherwise, it seems to me it should be in Arts/Crafts, but I don't know how your fair is set up.

Glad you had good times at your gigs, and are having fun currently!

Congratulations, Gayle!

At 5:08 PM , Blogger Fabulous Lorraine said...

I had meant to get there when the pick ups started and wait around until the person with the penguin picked it up and ask them about it, perhaps an entire interview, but the gig went long, and I barely made it in time to pick up our own honey and ribbon..

The penguin was long gone.

But I am going to experiment with gourd growing next summer. I want to make a Lock Ness Monster...

Right. Stop posting here and go do a new blog. Right . Will do.
