It began with a lamp....

It was the fault of a lamp. And my houseguests.

It went like this. I mentioned to some friends last week that I didn't like my bedroom and had moved out of it into the guest room, (or Kitty's room, when she is here) which is a lovely cozy place. One of them suggested that room was quite nice, but the lighting was horrible and suggested I get some lamps.

SO I thought today, well, I have these houseguests comeing, and will need to use this Bedroom, so I will go out and buy a lamp.

How much could that set me back? I mean, it's a lamp. WAY too much as it turned out, but it is, simply the coolest lamp EVER. (tried to take a photobooth shot of it, doesn't work. Martin Millar mentioned in his blog today that he believes himself to be the only person in the western hemisphere who does not have a working camera. Martin, don't believe it)

Martin Millar, ( www.martinmillar.com the link function just quit. Rats.) by the way, if you haven't read him, go you and do so now. It's weird, he is one of the best writers in the world, but largely unknown over here. His latest novel , The Lonely Werewolf Girl, is just out in the UK, you can order it HERE or wait till it comes out in the US, next month. Personally, I would not wait.

He's that good. I loved The Lonely Werewolf Girl, which I actually got to read first in manuscript form. Many times. (one of the perks of my job) I wish I had words to describe how he writes. It just makes me happy. You will love being with him.

My Boss wrote an introduction to a book of Martin's called "The Good Fairies of New York" You can read it HERE. He has no trouble with finding the right words. This book, by the way, has one of the single best opening scenes to any novel ever written, in my humble opinion. I won't say any more. Go and buy it. Now. You will be happy.

But I digress. So I got this lamp. And then thought, well, the lamp in the Sunroom woud look good in the Bedroom with New Lamp, so I'll get another lamp for the Sunroom too. And then I thought, well, the Sunroom could use a carpet, to go with the Second New Lamp. And I set that up, took New Lamp and Old Sunroom Lamp, up to the Bedroom and realized that they would be perfect if I moved an Old Bedroom Lamp to the Guest Room and completely re-arranged the Bedroom.

Hmmph. Then I noticed there were no curtains in the Guest Room, probebly because it was now, say, LIT. And I should get curtains for it, my Guests might not enjoy the "Who cares if people can see in" approach......

It never ended. And so on and so on.....

Merry Housekeeper and her Spooky Daughter are coming over in the morning to help me finish this MESS. (I have eight different kind of floor cleaner in my cupboard and don't know what any of them do. Or where they came from.)

Picked up another gig too today. I must be insane, this one is for Wednesday next week. Gigs four nights in a row. Never would have taken it if I hadn't been derranged from this frenzy of Everything Must Move.....

But you see, clearly...

It's not my fault. All the fault of a Lamp. And my Houseguests.

Love and Lamps,
Lorraine

Have you thought about buying a cheap, one-time use camera until your camera comes home? Or, even better, borrowing a camera from a friend? Maybe even having said friend(s) take pictures for you?

Of course, it's always the fault of the LAMP. ;)

That makes WAY too much sense. Spacelaw has promised to bring a camera, and the Pub is wifi'd so we will be doing some live blogging at the B'day shows.

Oh, for those of you comig uo for the shows, tonight the temp with going to -18 with windchills at -35 to -45. Below zero. The news quit giving out exact numbers a while ago, the are just saying "Dangerous Windchills."

Which means, uh, one could die out there.

We won't see zero this week....

I'm bringing my camera too...I had forgotten to mention it. I just bought a coat to bring. Don't know if it can handle that type of weather, though. I will come with a toque and not-so-warm gloves and I expect to be wearing many layers... and I bought some long underwear and good socks too. I expect to spend tomorrow looking for waterproof shoes. I hope that will do.

random question: what's your fav Winnie-the-Pooh character?

Malena - LOVE the new shots on your website. They are beautiful... and so sexy!! The blue outfit is amazing!!! and I love the jackets... so gorgeous! I adore the shot looking straight into the camera with your hands in your hair. You are truly stunning with the hat and that incredible top.. now I really understand what you meant when you said that some people wondering about 'staying in' something like that! You have such Wicked Taste!!!

Ah the peril of the lamp - I know only too well as we are hosting the youngest' grad open house (sadness) this June and it is never too early to get ready. specially when it is a one woman operation. Mine has started with gutting the pantry, and has now advanced into the kitchen. Where will it end - when the time runs out! I'm sure the rooms will be lovely and warm for your guests - have fun - and in a stunning show of karma, we too are having -40 windchill readings tomorrow - so I will be soon understanding your pain! (and 4 more inches of snow i think i may shoot myself) Rubius and Spacelaw - many pics and maybe vid so I can be properly jealous! It would've been the first time I could have done a slipjig or jig to live music. You will all have a wonderful time!

I am thinking Pooh. He is so very wise, and doesn't know it.

A A Milne's autobiography is wonderful, I've read it a few times, simply because it is such a delightful read.

Also, in a related aside, the last Flash Girls cd was nearly called "Nanny Let My Beetle Out" after my favourite of his poems. We did record " Buckingham Palace"

Malena IS wicked cool, isn't she????? I nearly posted those photos again here tonight just because they would have hotted up my post....We need to hear from this friend of hers too, anyone who can hold there own with our little Vampire, HAS to be cool!

Can anyone tell I have no gig tonight?? Me and the Bengals, a fire, a little SVU and the laptop. Oh yessssss..........

well, my camera doesn't do sound and it only takes a minute of video... max... so I can't help there.

Hey, you're way ahead of me...Photo wise, i am reduced to my photobooth on the Mac...

So, Gentle Readers, are you reading some Lonely Werewolf Girl???? There will be a movie of this and I am betting on our Sweet Little Fanged Thing for Thrix...Made for her it was..Or Malveria, tough call.

Heads up, you heard it here first.

Are any of these gigs at the hotel with the WiFi? Is your mac portable? Can we stream video from your mac's photobooth? What if we set it up at the shows? I use macs but I haven't tried to do that ever because ... well... because I am at work. ..You see if we could do that it that would be fun and I could handle the mac while you handled the show!!! Danth do you know how to stream video from photobooth? sigh, if there is anything your boss has taught me from his blog it is 'just go google it'... so the real question is ... do you want that? do you want your mac in the pub? is there a connection? and will the pub allow it? ... hehehehehe... we can do anything!!!

OMG Lorraine..I just saw "The Good Fairies of New York" several weeks ago at Borders. Unfortunately I was on my way OUT of the store, and I thought I'd file the title away in my brain for my next visit. Of course, when the time came, I couldn't remember the title OR the author.
This time I'm writing it down.;)
Ain't synchronicity cool? lol

You and your houseguests stay warm up there in the frozen Northland.:)

You should never had got that first lamp. It had a genie in it and it was wintering quite peacefully, keeping warm, when you disrupted it. Now it came out with a vengeance (also because it did not have its cup of cocoa yet and you just CAN'T manage a chocolate deprived genie)and jinxed the whole decoration party.

As for temperatures, I was playing with your boss' oracle ball early this morning and asked it "Will I suffer much from the cold in Minnesota?" and the answer I got was "How cool". It chilled me to the bone and am adding extra layers of clothing int he suitcase. One could die of such temperatures indeed.

I read "The Good Fairies of New York" a few months ago and giggled all the way. I can warmly recommend it too. I shall certainly check out the werewolve girl story.

Interior design can be like one of those sliding puzzles. You change one thing and everything else has to move too.

I had a similar experience yesterday at the garden centre. I just went to get some veggie seeds and a couple of plant pots, and before I knew it I had spent £81.60. Sigh.

Some of it was on guinea pig bedding! And the rest of it was on plants to beautify my garden and hence preserve my sanity! And we can only go when we have borrowed a car, so it's not as though it'll happen frequently.

I have read The Good Fairies. I must say that the fairies here party MUCH harder than the big people. Or maybe in Edinburgh where I live the fairies are well-behaved and pernickety and wouldn't talk to those wild Highland girls if you paid them.

All the gigs are at the hotel with Wifi, I don't think I'm up for live video feed. If Malena was here, sure...But the little Creature of the Night fears the extreme cold..

(or is working, I forget which)

We will post pics, and do some live blogging.

We have a "High" today that is below zero. I don't think that word means what they think it means.

I played with the Oracle Ball last night and asked how all these B'day Gigs were going to go and it said "I think it was me that died" Kid you not.

Good Faires is wonderful, but, having read all of Martin's books, I think I am going on record saying Lonely Werewolf Girl is my favourite. It's a book you just don't want to end. Long? Yes! And thank goodness! I saw on his blog he is writing a sequel, which makes me happy.

Kali..Glad to help! Now go and read and report back!

Genie. That does explain it. Spacelaw, what language did you read Good Fairies in? Just curious, I always wonder how things translate...

K..One gardens now in Edinburgh????

At 9:09 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

I read that in English (I am fastidious that way. Why should I suffer a translation?).

Now If you can't see me at the party, I shall be in the restaurant's freezer, getting warm and cozy.

I've been meaning to read "Good Fairies" for ages. Now I will definitely check it out.

It's always the LaM[p]'s fault.

At 9:33 AM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Well, there is some truth to that. It's currently -12 outside, windchill -37, which IS colder than the freezer.

It's horrid in America that other languages are simply not taught, a little in middle scool and high scool, as electives, but if they would start a second language in elementary....Kids would grow up bi-lingual.

Dan-guy. You. Slay. Me.

At 10:02 AM , Blogger spacedlaw said...

Well, we have that in France (and it's the same thing in Italy) but overall the level of what is taught is not particularly great and so people aren't really good at languages even if they have been force fed with them as kids.
The only good thing is that it has become easier to cheaply travel to the country of the language you are studying and this is very good to lear (providing you do not stick with your class mates or fellow citizens). But also a language is something that you learn and therefore something that you can forget. And you will if you don't keep using it, even your own mother tongue, fact which is really mind blowing...

Actually, I was really wanting to see pictures of said LAMP. ;)

::SIGH:: Alas, it will be my eldest's turn to supply the class snack on Friday, but even if that wasn't the case the cold has definitely scared me away. Minnesota is no place for a native Texan. ::SHIVER!!:: We've been unseasonably warm the past few days, highs in the mid 70s to low 80s, but closer to normal February temperatures are supposed to return starting Tuesday. That means highs in the mid to upper 50s and lows in the 30s. Quite warm in comparison to Minnesota.

ANYWAY...have fun! :)

I'll do LOTS of pictures just as soon as my camera is back. Actually as soon as Spacelaw and Rubius get here we can take pictures.

My Boss just pointed out to me that I get a Thank You in Lonely Werewolf Girl!!!!! Wow.

I mean. Wow. How cool is that???

Well. now that -I- am in it....Get reading you lot!

Merryhousekeeper, you are one crazed women ( that's ok tho, we like that here ) if that was yr idea of a good time. My house, however is clean , and I'm NOT kidding when I say I could not do it without you. I am SO Cleaning Challanged!

At 5:18 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

OH! By the way the lamps are truly and totally you & your house, bravo! Hi Kelli, I know the feeling lol, been there a few times now. hope this one works, hee hee. Yes, I am crazed, I love to clean, just can't help it... Spooky daughter says hello to you all!

At 8:46 PM , Blogger ariandalen said...

::waving:: Hi, Merry Housekeeper and Spooky Daughter!

"Lonely Werewolf Girl" will have to wait until I finish "Spirits in the Wire" by Charles de Lint. Have you read the werewolf books by Alice Borchardt? Wonderful books.

A note of warning to would be parents: You will not be devouring books anytime after the birth of the first child. Or, at the least, you devour/read far fewer than you did before children.
::SIGH::

At 9:36 PM , Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I've heard that about kids....I'm sure you read to them, you must get them as excited about reading as you are, which, again, I am sure you are onto.

I envy you yor weather...

Wait till they are teenagers..I hear that Spooky Daughter no longer likes her died black hair and is in the process of dying it red and blonde.

Personally, I'm proud of her, hee-hee...

Good Lord! I go and organize my closet (housefull of corsets) and BAM! 26 comments on the LaM blog. We are popular Deva!
Yes, it is true. i can be rather wicked in my taste in chocolate and clothing. Miles was so cute. We got the "Clive Barker on acid" dress from Alter Ego and he said,
"Ohh try that on for me!"
1 hour later, we were still pulling and tightening the buckles.

Then our friend came to hep me clean the house and there we were, me in a dress that would make a cinobyte blush and Miles standing there saying, 'Will you just hold still and stop singing and swishing you hips around. I'm trying to get this damn thing off."
It looked BAD! NO ONE would believe I was just trying on a dress.

COld weather here is 55 degrees. I WANT a reason to wear leather and boots and vintage fluff!

Ok. Carried away there.

Malena. My heart bleeds for you. Am sending hot chocolate in yr Valentine Box.

KITTY! Barry Manilow???? We will need a full report. That could either be way cool or way way scary....Trippy either way.

I don't know if they actually know each other or not, but our Boss is a huge fan. Ahd Mr Millar being an intelligent sort as well, one can assume it works both ways..

I loved Good Fairies. Love 'em al, if you havn't noticed that, hee-hee...

Lorraine, reading your comment it took me a while to sort out if your boss was a fan of Barry Manilow or of Martin Millar. For the sake of my sanity, I've settled for the later.
