Calling all Spiderwick Fans

I'd like to introduce you to my newest house guest. This is Hogsqueal. He is a part of the Spiderwick family. Miles is sculpting some of the creatures for the upcoming Spiderwick Movie and they needed "someone" to make the outfit for this little guy. Of course, I volunteered. Hogsqueal reminds me of my dog Stanzi, if she was part goblin. What am I saying, she IS!

I LOVE SPIDERWICK! Here's the site: www.spiderwick.com
If you haven't read the series, you simply MUST. My daughter loved the books. I wish I could keep these little guys. It's so hard to see them leave when they're finished. Oh well, I'll have to wait for the toys like everyone else.

Stanzi? Awesome name!! Big Mozart fan I am!!

The little critter is so kooot! Reminds me a little of a gremlin.

I've never read Spiderwick. I'm sure the child has picked up a copy. I'll have to ask her what she thinks. Alchemy is enjoying the Charlie Bone series right now...your baby bean might like that. I read the first one and liked it. OH!! And another really good series is the Warriors series. It's about gangs of cats. And Cirque de Freak too. It isn't a weekend without a trip to the bookstore.

Speaking of books...Lorraine? Did you ever finish Golden Compass? I hear the movie is coming out Fall of '07. Alchemy was showing me some protest sites on the web the other day.

Cute! And really cool that Miles is working on that movie! I haven't read any of the Spiderwick books, but my husband almost bought me the _Spiderwick Field Guide_ for Christmas/birthday. Why didn't he? Because I saw it and picked it up for a closer look at the book store. I guess he wanted it to be a complete surprise.

OK, everyone's reading assignment is the Spiderwick series. Holly's also written two novels "Tithe" and "Valiant" aimed at an older audience (I think it's still YA... I'm not good at categorizing things and sticking labels on them. This may be why I am Bad With Paperwork). She's a lot of fun, likes the Green Fairy and had the coolest t-shirt at WFC: Read a F---ing Book (with the letter, not dashes), which if I remember right, was given to her by her agent. She has an LJ under the name blackholly.
Jodyeth would tell you that you should all get busy and read her as well.

Tony DiTerlizzi, who illustrated the books, also did some very spookycutecool illustrations for "The Spider and the Fly".

Congrats to Miles on getting that gig! He's got to be having fun with that.

There appear to be a few different hotels within spitting distance of Balticon. I'm going to call around tomorrow in search of a suite to book. Would anyone like to go in on it with me, pending details? Generally you get a bedroom or two, a couch or two, maybe a fireplace and a kitchen and a meeting room. With enough people it's cheaper and, of course, much better amenities.

I don't know how long I'll actually be spending in whatever hotel room I end up in -- I'm determined to sleep as little as possible this time -- but figure I should maximize my dollar while not sleeping in my car for once.

adriana: Protest sites...Christians who want to ban the movie.

Alchemy says she has read the books and likes them and she thinks it is cool that Malena is designing clothes for the critters...that the books have really awesome critters.

Hmmm, it seems this *spiderwick* comes highly recommended ;-p

I guess I will have to try that series soon. Thanx all.

Lorraine, oh I do hope you keep at GC!! and enjoy it. I think the series is great with a capital GRRRR :-)

It seems Alchemy has increased another level of cool, finding GC movie sites... I didn't even know they existed yet... nice to learn.

Damn but I want to go to Balticon... just from chatting with you all on here. It would be great to meet you, all of you... everyone is so neat.. so cool... so positive... but can a blog inspire a person to fly 3791 kms (2355 miles)?... Sigh, it is so far away... and work... and... excuses excuses...

And as I write this Dark Sonnet comes on and tears come to my eyes. so beautiful.

and if I were to come I sure would need to cut down on expenses so...

Dan! look what you did with your hotel-splitting idea... such a good idea... such a dilemma of a decision now sits before me, since I clearly should make a decision soon...

what to do, what to do....

now my coworker in my two person office is leaving for allergy reasons in one week... there's no replacement as of yet... and our horse-drawn carriage season opens march 1 and I bet I get to train and do piles of overtime all over again... more chaos than last year... added businesses my boss is trying to start... unfortunate and undeserved legal messes... events to put on... and me, in charge of everything at the office... yikes.

and in all truth if I get time off, of which only one week is due to me, I should go to see my elderly and recently ailing only grandmother in California.... very far from Balticon.

so... suggestions anyone? perhaps tips on magic portals between middle of nowhere CA and MD... clues on how to split yourself in two (or three?... ooh three of me would be good...I could finally get some stuff done... like that filing that has been sitting around our 3 offices for the last year..heh heh) or links to special canadian websites that will provide a nice permanent "Admin. Ass." (that is my private name for my job) who isn't allergic to office pussy-cats (no racy pun intended) to work in our office...

hahaha... little crazy today...

Has anyone registered for a party at Balticon?

At 4:19 AM , Blogger vandaluna said...

Danth...officially planned parties? None that I know of. Since you are near Ravyn, you should get in touch with her.

Hee...Rubius, thanks for saying Alchemy is cool. I, her own mother, cannot believe she was bestowed upon me!

And you just have to live. You wanted a "hint"? Just live like there is money to pay for it, like there is time for it, and the ethers make sure there is. I do think that is something you have to start in small ways, but it's really true. I spend what I want and do what I want (of course within reason, I don't take gluttonous advantage) and somehow I always am able to pay for and find time. Start looking at plane tix now. They have to be cheaper for you than they are for me to fly out of the nether regions. I'm sure there will be plenty of food for you to eat once you get there. Aside from the plane ticket, I think you could do it for around $300. Price of the shared room and a souvenir and some food.

my plane ticket from LA to B-more was only $230.
yeaHHH. I truly agree with V-luna on the "money comes easily to me" mantra lifestyle. And her point about the non-glutton attitude is key. Not that any of you seem prone to such indulging, but you know she is so right on...
I have a magic wallet, courtesy the universe, that seems to fill when i need. For this, i am forever in karmic servitute & a state of gratefulness.
Now! off to lunch with Malena!

I have made a suite reservation at the Courtyard Baltimore Hunt Valley (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/BWIHU). It is approximately 1100 feet from Marriott's Hunt Valley Hotel (where Balticon is being held).

It includes one bedroom with two beds, a kitchen(ette), a living room with a pull-out sofa-bed, and two televisions. Plus free hi-speed internet, which costs $10/day at the official hotel.

It runs $149/night, which is just $30 more than the con-rate for the Marriott. Since it will sleep at least three people I hope to pay no more than $50/night.

At 7:18 PM , Blogger vandaluna said...

wow kitty kat...I like the way you phrased that...a karmic wallet thanks to the universe. And DANG it is so true.

I also navigate by the ethers...::snicker:: Nora and the childling will tell you about that! Maps, schmaps! Who needs 'em?

And Lorraine is right too! Carpe diem...seize the carp!

It's the whole concept of true belief and faith. So Rubius, you've no excuse. It wouldn't be complete without you. I'd offer you floor space, and if it is possible you can have it, but having a child with me and perhaps a friend or two, I can't promise anything.

A life well lived is worth more than anything...that is what physical manifestations are about. I hate to impart this concept to anyone since one's job can be quite important, but my great-grandmother used to say that "god doesn't close a door that he doesn't open a window".

very true Vanda, even the most heinous experiences of my life have provided a silver lining, tho it may have taken a while to show itself and for me to understand it. I am living proof of that. I hope all of us here can get to B-con-this is a wonderful bunch of peopleth, please try Rubius! (oh and kitty - you are positively poetic..)

what a response.... wow, thank you for your kind words and thoughtful advice. I am even more inspired to come than ever. I truly believe in that make-plans-and-it-will-happen thing.... and if you go for it, you can't help but learn something in the process, no matter what the result (so there has to be a net gain).

(I too love the idea of a cosmic karmic wallet)

you know, when faced with a problem I usually tell myself to think out of the box and a solution will be found... I somehow forgot to do that this time...but, while chatting this out with a close friend tonight a solution may have presented itself... and with it the 'smack on the head' feeling of geez... I should have been thinking out of the box... hmmm.

here all this time I have been thinking ... how do I do this... get two weeks off or cram it into one week (and all with the thought of an elderly grandma to consider)... how silly of me. My time need not be compressed into weeks.... it can be doled out in long weekends as well... at least, I suspect it can be. (what a simple thought... and what a dunce I feel like ... that it took me that long to consider that)

Thanks again for the positive messages... I think I am going to make a few inquiries... hmmm. I, um, might just be able to swing it... maybe, just maybe (it would be so fun to come to the con).

and if I came there I would be happy to pay something like 50ish for a room.

best wishes all.

Maybe I shall go and investigate Spiderwick - I stacked lots of copies of the first book when I worked in a bookshop, but never read it. Then again, my priorities were obviously skewed back then (I also stacked tons of Coralines but again didn't read it at the time). As you can imagine, it was like a sweetie shop for me, and I couldn't read EVERYTHING that looked good.

I really hope you do get to BaltiCon, Rubius! I'm kind of resigned to not going now, although our honeymoon plans haven't worked out, so who knows...? (Not sure it would really be fair to my boy, though. I might make it to the British FantasyCon in September - anyone fancy a trip to sunny Nottingham?)

Well......the chance of me making it to Balticon are somewhere between slim and nil.

At least physically. ;)

The Spiderwick books were amazing on so many levels. First the story was just great. Then the illustrations were wonderful. And the books themselves...the size, the colors...the whole presentation of them...were enchanting. I am so excited that they are doing a movie and I hope they do justice to these amazing books.

At 8:53 AM , Blogger ariandalen said...

Lorraine: Yes.
Granted, that means I have to get into a loop that I've never been in, i.e. the convention loop, or even just organized fandom in Texas.
Oops, forgot. There's no such critter in Texas. ;)
But I may be able to pull a six degrees.
